Moraine Valley holding open auditions for ‘Next to Normal’

August 13, 2026

The Moraine Valley Community College Academic Theater Department is holding auditions for the American rock musical “Next to Normal” on Tuesday, Sept. 8, starting at 6 p.m., in the Fine and Performing Arts Center, 9000 W. College Parkway in Palos Hills.

Winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score, “Next to Normal” explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness. It follows what appears to be a typical American family of four whose lives are anything but normal. The story takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, revealing their inner thoughts, deepest challenges and darkest memories. “Next to Normal” provides opportunities for performers to explore dramatic material and showcase vocal ranges with an energetic pop/rock score.

People of all ages, ethnicities, gender identities and backgrounds are encouraged to audition. Those auditioning should prepare a one-minute monologue. While not preferred, cold readings will be provided, if needed. Participants also should prepare 32 bars of a song in the style of the show and bring sheet music for the piece printed double-sided in a binder. Auditions will include dance and movement, so comfortable clothing and shoes are encouraged. Students may receive credit if they perform in the show. “Next to Normal” will run Nov. 6-15 with rehearsals adjusted based on cast schedules.

Interested actors can sign up in advance for a specific time slot in Building F, Room F150, or by contacting Dr. Craig Rosen at rosen@morainevalley.edu.
