Pursuing a career in the trades wasn’t at the forefront of Kylynn Hernandez’s mind when she was thinking about her future, but social media posts sparked her curiosity in a new career and prompted her to enroll in classes at Moraine Valley.
“I had some other things in mind, but then videos and pictures about welding kept coming across my [Instagram and TikTok] feed and I was like, ‘Oh, wow, I think I would like to pursue this.’ You know, at least give it a try,”
— Mechanical Technologies DepartmentThese days, Reggie sails from one end of the court to the other, like he never had to relearn how to walk. His ultimate goal is to play at an NCAA Division I university before going pro. But he also is eager to earn a degree (he earned a 3.1 GPA this fall) and potentially return to the classroom teaching statistics or business. With athletics in his blood, he wants to become a coach as well, dispensing the wisdom he gained far too young. Until then, he’ll keep hustling and defying the odds.
“This is what I wanted for Reggie – to play college ball,” Dianne beamed. “I want to be here to see all his dreams come true. And I’m pretty confident he’ll do it. We’re so proud of him.”
— Colleague, Communications DepartmentSince she was a child, Maya Hyser always told everyone she would be a nurse. True to her long-held vision, Maya will graduate in December 2025 from the Moraine Valley Nursing Program.
“My mom graduated and started working immediately, and then went on to earn her bachelor’s degree. She told me all about her experience at Moraine Valley and how much she loved it. I saw that she was thriving, and she is so good and so smart at what she does, and that really inspired me.”
— Health Sciences DepartmentWhile in the Illinois Army National Guard, Connor was a combat medic and now is an officer. He’s been a pretrial probation officer, an emergency room technician, worked with patients on a designated COVID floor and is a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
