Marichu Belarmino says she is “just doing her job,” but the extra effort and time she puts into her work earned her the 2025 Part-Time Employee Award.
Since starting at the college in October 2021, Belarmino has worked in the Cashier’s Office. Prior to this role, she worked at a bank, which was a more stress-inducing environment.
“My job at the bank was stressful, and I wanted something else. My husband saw a job at Moraine Valley, which was only five minutes away from us,” Belarmino said. “People here are so friendly, and it’s not stressful. In my first month, I had to learn a lot, but people were so supportive and gave me time to learn. I’m still learning, but if they give me a new project, I’ll do it accordingly. It’s totally different here. I can breathe. I love doing my job.”
Belarmino works five-hour days, and her weeks are filled with tuition waivers, student vouchers, paperwork and billing. When registration begins each semester, her workload increases to better help students get their in-district and out-of-district payments and billing organized. Her nominator noticed Belarmino’s daily diligence and dedication.
“Marichu consistently goes above and beyond in her work, demonstrating her commitment to our students and her willingness to support our team and colleagues outside our office. She is a strong team player, always stepping in where needed and contributing to a collaborative work environment,” said nominator Karrie Mallo, director of Accounts Receivable. “Her positive outlook is genuinely appreciated, as she fosters a welcoming atmosphere and encourages others to do the same. Her dedication to providing the best experience does not go unnoticed, and it has significantly impacted our students and our team. Marichu is highly deserving of this recognition.”
Co-workers often notice Belarmino staying a few minutes later to get work done, but she does not think twice about the additional effort because it is in her nature. Although at times it can seem like she has mountains of paperwork to complete, she wants to get as many tasks accomplished as possible and move on to the next obstacle.
This is the first time Belarmino has earned any kind of award, which surprised and humbled her.
“I was shocked about this award. I never experienced anything like this before. Someone acknowledged my work. It’s a good feeling to be appreciated, but I’m just here, helping and working. I’m not working for an award,” Belarmino explained. “When I saw the email about winning the award, I was like, ‘Wow, I can show my kids that hard work pays off.’ It’s an honor to earn this award and my pleasure.”
