A winning submission by Jennifer Gutierrez (second from left in front row) to the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) regionals speech competition earned her a spot in the national competition, where she represented Moraine Valley and Illinois.
Her regional video submission featured a persuasive speech on ways to attract nontraditional students to join PTK. At nationals, she performed the speech and advanced as one of the top two competitors in the first round to the semi-final rounds.
Jennifer was honored to be selected and says she didn’t realize what a huge deal this was until she won at regionals.
“This was a new experience for me, and I enjoyed it. I’m so proud of how far I went.”
Student Life Manager Demetrius Robinson, PTK co-advisor, also is proud of Jennifer and credits her leadership skills with her success, noting Jennifer’s drive and determination.
“She wanted to participate and did this all on her own. She showed us what a true leader she is. To be selected to represent your college and your state is a huge honor,” he said.
