In-Person, Online, Virtual and Hybrid

Explore the four class formats the college offers.

What class formats are available?

Moraine Valley Community College will offer classes in four formats: in-preson, online, virtual and hybrid.

What kind of technology do I need for online classes?

Online, virtual and hybrid classes will require access to a computer (desktop or laptop) and the internet to get into your courses. We do not recommend completing coursework from a cellphone. See the computer and browser requirements for Canvas, which is Moraine Valley’s online course management system. Some classes will require webcams and a microphone to participate in synchronous sessions (set days and times). Other technology requirements for specific courses may be defined by faculty members. You may need access to a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs to create your assignments. You have free access to Office 365 through your Moraine Valley student email. In email, in the top left corner, click on “Office 365” and download the full version. Optionally, Canvas has a “Canvas Student” app available for Android and iOS that helps students stay connected to their courses on the go. See the Canvas Guides – Canvas Student page for more information.

What are online classes?

An online course is a mostly asynchronous learning experience (no set meeting dates and times) using Canvas (Moraine Valley’s learning management system) and/or other technology via the internet to deliver content, facilitate communication, collect student work and assess student performance. Any components with set days and times, if any, are optional.

What are in-person classes?

In-person learning is traditional classroom instruction that has a set
schedule and requires in-person student attendance. Classes occur in real-time between teachers and students at one of our three locations —our main campus in Palos Hills or our sites in Blue Island and Tinley Park.

What are virtual classes?

Virtual classes have scheduled, real-time, online sessions at specific dates and times. A virtual class is a blend of synchronous and asynchronous (scheduled dates and times as well as learning that takes place on our own) online learning experiences using Canvas (Moraine Valley’s learning management system), real-time video, and other technology via the internet to deliver content, facilitate communication, collect student work and assess student performance. Scheduled real-time virtual class meetings require participation/attendance. If a student is registered for a virtual class, students are expected to attend any synchronous (scheduled dates and times) components added by the instructor, which must occur during the regularly scheduled class time. Students will “attend” online via web conferencing tools, and these virtual meetings will be set up and scheduled by the instructor.

What are hybrid classes?

Hybrid Classes: A hybrid course is a blend of mostly asynchronous online learning experiences (NO set online meeting dates and times) and face-to-face class sessions. Hybrid courses have learning activities that must be completed via Canvas (Moraine Valley’s learning management system) or other technology, as well as class sessions that require on-campus or other in-person attendance, such as labs and clinicals. If a student is registered for a hybrid class, the class session offered will be in person on campus or other locations depending on the needs of the program. These in-person meetings must occur during the scheduled in-person class time. If required by health concerns or governmental orders, synchronous components (online, scheduled dates and times) will be added by the instructor if the course must go fully online at some point during the semester.

What platforms will be used for the classes?

All courses will use the Canvas learning management system available on the web. Some courses may use additional online tools to support instruction, such as publisher resources. Virtual courses will require online web conferencing for synchronous class meetings (scheduled dates and times). Registered students will be able to log into Canvas. Instructors will provide details for publisher resources and other online tools.

How do I know if I need to come to campus?

Students in HYBRID classes that require on-campus class sessions should check the course section detail listing to see the dates, times and room location for class meetings. If there is no information listed, contact your instructor.

How do I identify on my schedule if a course is in-person, online, virtual or hybrid?

The location field that appears on your schedule will indicate if a class is online or virtual. Hybrid courses will have a physical room location just like in-person classes.

What are the start and end dates for my class?

Classes have various start and end dates. Students should refer to their course schedule on MVConnect. Students also can view the academic calendar on MVConnect for additional semester dates.
