Professional violinist Mariela Shaker will present a lecture on Friday, Nov. 19, 5:30 p.m., in the Moraine Valley Community College Fine and Performing Arts Center’s (FPAC) Dorothy Menker Theater, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills. This is free and open to the public.

Shaker is part of the “Songs for Syria” performance in collaboration with two other Syrian artists on Saturday, Nov. 20, 3 p.m. Her lecture, “Mariela Shaker: Tragedy and Triumph,” will explore her journey from Aleppo, Syria, to the U.S. and the struggles she endured while becoming a successful musician. She will highlight the role music plays in life to inspire change while empowering women and youths through her story and music. She will perform her violin during the event.
