The DIVA Jazz Orchestra will perform some swinging tunes on Friday, April 4, 7:30 p.m., at the Moraine Valley Community College Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC) in the Dorothy Menker Theater, 9000 W. College Parkway in Palos Hills.
DIVA is an ensemble of 15 versatile, multi-generational musicians who passionately and creatively carry on the big band tradition. Headed by swinging drummer Sherrie Maricle, the group exudes the excitement of the great big bands but with fresh musical vision and dynamic originality.
For more than 30 years, DIVA has toured the world to critical and popular acclaim, playing mainstream and contemporary big band jazz composed and arranged to fit their distinct ensemble sound and highlight each soloist. They have shared the stage with such artists as Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams, The Manhattan Transfer, Diane Schuur, Nnenna Freelon and other jazz luminaries. Noteworthy appearances include the PBS special “Maurice Hines Tappin’ Thru Life,” the soundtrack for the Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular, the award-winning film “The Girls in the Band,” CBS News Sunday Morning and The Kennedy Center 25th Anniversary Celebration.
DIVA was founded by Stanley Kay, a one-time manager and relief drummer for Buddy Rich, one of the most influential drummers in U.S. history. In 1990, Kay heard Maricle play and decided to create a band of like-minded musicians. A nationwide audition brought together the talented group heard today.
