“Structure & Color” by contemporary fiber artist Heather Macali is the next art exhibit anticipated to open in 2025 in the Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery in the Moraine Valley Community College Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC), 9000 W. College Parkway in Palos Hills. The show runs Feb. 5 to March 2, featuring a reception with the artist on Thursday, Feb. 6, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Structure & Color” examines the psychology of limitations through waffle weave, a three-dimensional single weave pattern. Macali focuses her work primarily on color, pattern, texture, distortion and memory. Through this exhibit, Macali encourages new ways to think about sculptural form using the inherent structure to create dimensions within the cloth by altering the scale, materials and color. Her pieces consider color theory, optical blending, architectural components and yield inspiration from op-art and pop art.
Macali’s use of color and patterns stems from childhood experiences dealing with the material culture of the Midwest in the 1980s and 1990s. She worked in the fashion industry as a print and pattern designer at Abercrombie & Fitch Co. as well as La Senza.
Macali grew up in Munroe Falls, Ohio, and earned a bachelor’s degree in crafts from Kent State University and a Master of Fine Arts in textiles at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She lives in Detroit, Michigan, and is a fiber artist and professor at Wayne State University.
