Observe the local public house in County Mayo, Ireland, as a young man spins a tale of murder in “The Playboy of the Western World” at Moraine Valley.
Written by Ireland’s first great modern playwright, John Millington Synge, “The Playboy of the Western World” has been firmly established as one of the great comedies of modern theater. A stranger with a secret walks into a pub on the wild western coast of Ireland. As his story unfolds, the people of the nearby village are drawn into his tale in this hilarious masterpiece.
Its first performance in 1907 caused riots in the streets of Dublin by Irish nationalists who viewed the play as an offense to public morals and an insult to Ireland; however, it has delighted audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Academic Theater production is Feb. 26 to March 6, in the John and Angeline Oremus Theater, in the Fine and Performing Arts Center. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday performances are at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 for the general public and $10 for seniors and students.
