Moraine Valley’s noncredit Vet Assisting Program has received approval from the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), an organization dedicated to the advancement of veterinary nursing and technology since 1981.
The approval means the college’s program, which is enrolling students for a Jan. 27 start, teaches the appropriate job skills and knowledge needed for veterinary assistants to succeed. Veterinary assistants are an integral part of the veterinary team supporting a veterinarian with surgeries, monitoring animals, giving medication, talking with pet owners, and more.
This pre-professional program can be completed in six months, and participants receive a certificate of completion. Upon completion, students also will be eligible to sit for NAVTA’s exam through which they could earn the organization’s Approved Veterinary Assistant designation.
The college’s program includes more than 150 hours of classroom instruction on topics like medical terminology, animal behavior and handling, surgical assisting, laboratory safety and procedures, diagnostic imaging and more. Students also participate in 100 externship hours working in a clinical setting to get ready for a new career.
This class is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 27 and meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. in Building C, Room C167. The program runs through July 22. The cost is $2,499. Registration is required; the course code is VT4-101-200.
Registration is available online, by phone at (708) 974-2110 or in-person by visiting the registration office in Building S, Room S103. Moraine Valley is located at 9000 W. College Parkway in Palos Hills.
