Inspired by the words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “We Shall Overcome” will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m., in the Dorothy Menker Theater at Moraine Valley Community College, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills.

Tickets are $30, $25 for seniors and free for children and students with ID. Those who qualify for free admission will be required to obtain a ticket to reserve a seat.

Presented by Damien Sneed, the celebration of Dr. King, showcases repertoire from across the African-American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders with interwoven spoken words from Dr. King’s recorded speeches.

The production by Sneed ties together a living lineage of music and culture that includes traditional and modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway and spiritual originally performed by legends like Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder and more.

Accompanying Sneed will be multiple voices from local communities, schools and churches who are volunteering to share their talents in a choir assembled specifically for this show. Directing the choir is Brytish Thomas, who teaches piano and voice at Moraine Valley, and is the minister of Music at Covenant Church in Chicago.
