The Moraine Valley Community College Speech Team took home the silver and more than 20 individual awards in a speech and debate tournament held at Harper College in Palatine.
Under the direction of Forensics Director John Nash, professor of Communications, the team came in second place, competing against 19 colleges from as far away as New York and Virginia. Top honors went to David Ward, of Oak Lawn; and Moises Bello, of Chicago; who tied for second place in the overall speaker category.
Additional student awards were garnered by Natalie Jurcik, of Bridgeview, three gold medals; Jennifer Gutierrez, of Bridgeview, three gold medals; Breanne Frausto, of Blue Island, bronze medal; and Ward, two gold medals and two silver medals.
Ethan Gallant, of Chicago Ridge, earned a gold medal and two silver medals; Bello earned three gold medals and a bronze; Andrew Kuntz, of Alsip, won a gold medal; Julian Camacho, of Oak Lawn, won three gold medals; and Peter Granato, of Orland Park, earned a gold medal.
“I am so pleased with the work ethic and dedication of the team this year,” Nash said. “We have such wonderful students here at Moraine Valley, and I feel honored to be able to help develop their intelligence and creative talents.”
