Explore the Acropolis of Athens or learn some Greek words through a short study abroad course in Athens, Greece, through Moraine Valley Community College this May and June.

The college’s three-week class, Social Science 101 (SSC-101-601), covers history, economics, sociology and politics but also incorporates a study abroad element. The course begins on May 19 at Moraine Valley before the class heads to Athens from May 21 to June 6.

The American College of Greece will host participants, who will hear several lectures and learn about ancient and modern Greece in addition to taking excursions to Olympia, Delphi and two islands, with additional free time to explore.

“Study abroad is one of those things that cannot be quantified. It changes your life; it expands your knowledge, beliefs and understanding of yourself. This short-term opportunity offers flexibility for students. Community members also are very welcome and have traveled with the program previously,” said Merri Fefles-Dunkle, Moraine Valley professor of history and political science, who is teaching this course. “The program will be a blend of lecture and hands-on learning. It is designed to be friendly for those who want to travel and enjoy an educational component as well. They will get to see things one would normally not be able to enjoy on a regular trip to Greece.”

In addition to tuition and fees, the travel portion will cost up to $3,500, which includes transportation within Athens, lodging, some meals, academic lectures, five excursions, a service-learning experience and travel insurance. Students using financial aid may be eligible for some funding.

Those interested in this opportunity should complete the application here and email it to Fefles-Dunkle at fefles@morainevalley.edu. For more information, view the study abroad web page, email Fefles-Dunkle or call her at (708) 974-5393.
