Moraine Valley finished fourth in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and sixth at regionals. Their overall record was 5-4 and 2-3 in conference. All the wins were either sweeps, 8-1 or 7-2.

“Competition this year was very tough. With a lot of new faces coming in as well as some big time hitters returning to the other colleges, we saw a huge shift in competitiveness this year,” said Head Coach Dave Souza, who finished his second season leading the program. “Overall, the team did meet our expectations of having a good performance during the season. We did make improvements throughout, especially at the regional tournament.”

Sophomore Ryan O’Connor (Lincoln-Way East) finished highest among the Cyclones at regionals, taking fourth place at No. 4 singles. He had a solid year, winning seven out of nine matches in that position. Sophomore Aidan Lysouvakon (Sandburg) and freshman Ixit Prajapati (Oak Forest) were not only doubles partners but also team leaders all season.

Souza noted some third set tiebreakers, especially against Milwaukee Area Technical College by Lysouvakon, and sweeps that highlighted the season. He couldn’t predict that several match days would have to be played indoors because of weather, despite the team largely practicing outdoors in the preseason. Regardless of the outcome, Souza is looking ahead to the possibilities in 2024.

Freshmen Prajapati and Henry Witek (Andrew) are expected to return and several freshmen recruits are joining the team. “I’m very excited for that because it’s going to be a new start with new players as well as for me being able to mold them into my style,” Souza said.
