Moraine Valley Community held a record-breaking Halloween 5K walk/run on Oct. 27.

Participation nearly doubled and money raised for student scholarships broke a record for Moraine Valley Community College’s Halloween 5K held on Oct. 27.

Thanks in part to perfect fall weather, the Halloween 5K, 1K and Pumpkins Patch (children’s area) had a collective 300+ registrants, almost double from last year and the most in the event’s five-year run. Mike Stanek (Oak Lawn) finished first overall in 18:16.4, and Lindsey Schmidt (Morris) took first among the women in 21:46.4. More importantly, nearly $7,000 was raised, an increase from $4,800 last year, all of which supports scholarships.

Roughly 50 Moraine Valley and community volunteers, including students from Stagg and Sandburg high schools, and several event sponsors supported this successful event.

“Everything went off without a hitch. The goal of this year’s event was to raise greater awareness of our campus community, support our student scholarship fund and provide a fun and inviting atmosphere to all runners, walkers and families.

With beautiful weather, a scenic loop through and around Moraine Valley’s campus, a multitude of family activities in the Pumpkins Patch, a live band, raffle prizes and a competitive Halloween costume contest, we exceeded these goals and had a record-breaking day all around,” said Jana Terborg, race director and assistant director of Fitness Programs at the Health, Fitness & Recreation Center.

Next year’s event is set for Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019.
