Moraine Valley golf wraps up spring season at regionals

With a long stretch between the end of fall golf and regionals in April, the Moraine Valley Community College golf team played consistently all season through the end.

After a tough run at the NJCAA Region 4 tournament April 27-29 up against some of the hardest competition, a rough-playing course and windy conditions, the Cyclones placed ninth overall to finish the season. Sophomore Casey Taylor (Marian Catholic) led the effort for 25th place. In the fall, he helped his team finish second in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and was the No. 4 All-Conference player after hitting a 77.

Coming in behind Taylor all season was freshman Matthew Pawyza (Lockport Township). He finished 35th at regionals and earned No. 5 All-Conference, thanks to his 75-shot performance.

Once the Cyclones settled into a groove in the fall, they played consistently and improved at every outing. The break between the final conference match at the end of September and regionals is challenging due to the winter, but the players practiced and worked out as much as possible.

The Cyclones bid farewell to their transferring sophomores – Ryan Flynders (Hinsdale South), Joey O’Brien (Lincoln-Way West), Sebastian Rak (Sandburg) and Taylor. Pawyza will be the lone returner to guide new players recruited by Head Coach Matt Lovelace, who culminated his ninth season leading the program.

“It was another solid season. We finished well in conference and did our best at regionals,” he said. “We are saying goodbye to everyone except Matthew, so he will be the leader to a new, fresh team. I already have two new guys coming in, and I’m meeting a few more next week to reload. I’m looking forward to a great summer getting these guys ready to win conference in a few months.”
