The Moraine Valley Community College golf team ended its fall season with another consistent performance, taking second place overall with two golfers earning All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference honors.
It was a perfect day to be on the links at Randall Oaks Golf Club in West Dundee for their final conference outing in September, and the Cyclones played their best round all season. They were only 10 shots behind first place Oakton College.
“This is the best we’ve played in years. Everyone thinks they can always do better, but all the guys improved. This course is really tight, but they managed their game and showed up today,” said Head Coach Matt Lovelace. “We were close behind Oakton and were consistently improving. That’s all you can do.”
Matthew Pawyza (Lockport) led the way with 75 strokes followed by Casey Taylor (77, Marian Catholic), Ryan Flynders (79, Hinsdale South), Sean Pickert (84, Lincoln-Way Central) and Sebastian Rak (88, Sandburg). Taylor earned No. 4 All-Conference honors and Pawyza earned No. 5 based on their scores. Flynders missed honors by .75 of a stroke.
“Flynders broke 80, which was great. Sean shot par on the front nine and did well. Casey was solid and Matthew consistently hits the ball far. It was a good day,” Lovelace said
This was the fifth and final conference match for golf, and Moraine Valley ended the first half of the season in second place. The Cyclones will practice throughout the fall and winter before reconvening in March to compete in other outings and prepare for the NJCAA Region 4 championship (April 27-29, 2025).
“This is the best swinging team I’ve had, but we have to work on course management. We’re also going to work on our short-game work, which we did focus on this fall and it helped our scores,” Lovelace said.
