Chalk up the hands and test brute strength at the FitRec Bench Press Competition on Wednesday, March 1, 6 to 9 p.m., inside the gym at the Moraine Valley Health, Fitness & Recreation Center (Building H), 9000 W. College Pkwy. in Palos Hills. This contest is open to Moraine Valley students, FitRec members and nonmembers.

Participants must be 18 years old and will face others in their weight class divided by gender. Each contestant has three attempts to lift his or her max weight with proper form. An awards ceremony will immediately follow the competition.

Registration before the contest is $15 for Moraine Valley students and active FitRec members and $20 for nonmembers. Day-of registration increases by $5. All participants who register by Feb. 15 are guaranteed a T-shirt.

“Last year we had 25 participants and are hoping for more this year. We decided to host the competition again because as soon as it was over, students were asking when we could do it again. It was a lot of fun, and a lot of family and friends spectated,” said Julie Bearden, assistant director of Fitness and Wellness. “Last year, it was open only to students and gym members, but this year we opened it up to the community because of the excitement it generated.”
