Tamima Farooqui, Moraine Valley Community College job resource specialist, was named the 2018 Student Employment Supervisor of the Year for the State of Illinois.

For her excellence in leadership, mentorship and professionalism, Moraine Valley Community College job resource specialist, Tamima Farooqui, was named the 2018 Student Employment Supervisor of the Year for the State of Illinois by the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators.

This honor is given to one supervisor from colleges and universities around the state. Last year, Moraine Valley Student Life manager, Demetrius Robinson, earned the award.
“I was very excited and surprised to learn about this award especially because there were so many other colleges and universities participating,” Farooqui said. “It really is an honor and to know so many people do the work they do with students. I’m lucky to be able to do what I do. It brings me a lot of joy working with students.”

Farooqui is the supervisor for the college’s Job Resource Center (JRC) student ambassadors. She helps students prepare to promote the JRC, teaches them how to mentor other students as well as how to break out of their shell through presentations and outreach efforts. She attributes some of what she has learned over the years to her coworker and fellow award winner, Robinson, and from her students.

“I’ve learned one size doesn’t fit all. Some students need extra support and some work more independently,” she said. “We can all learn and grow from each other.”
