Classes to become trained in the logistics industry are starting this month at Moraine Valley Community College. This certification offers an opportunity for a career that’s in high demand for qualified personnel.

The Certified Logistics Associate program aligns with the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council, providing training in the core competency areas required for high-skilled, frontline material handling workers across all supply chain facilities. Students will learn the basics of supply chain logistics, global supply chain logistics life cycle, logistics environment, material handling equipment, safety and quality control principles, workplace communications, teamwork and workplace behavior, and computer usage.

According to the most recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment growth will continue to increase in this field, driven by the need for logistics in the transportation of goods in a global economy. Students like Shervon Verlaux, of Justice, credit this program with helping her achieve a promotion at her current position at a trucking company in Palos Hills. She completed the program and currently is continuing her education in the Supply Chain Management program.

“My family is a huge support system for me,” Verlaux said. “My husband, mom and dad, and my brother and sister. They were all telling me you’re never too old to go back to school. They said just because I’m 37 doesn’t mean I had to stop going to school.

“I have a passion for what I do. Some people work just for a paycheck, but this—the transportation industry—it’s in my blood. My dad’s been a truck driver, and my husband works for the CTA. I have goals, and having these credentials is going to help me reach those goals.”

The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m., Oct. 23 through Nov. 29, in Building T, Room T952 on the main campus, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills. The course code is MP8-700-200. Cost is $1,099.
