Learn the importance of smoke detectors, sprinklers and more during Fire Safety Day at Moraine Valley Community College on Monday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Events will take place in Building T and the Fire Science garage on campus, 9000 W. College Parkway in Palos Hills.
Moraine Valley students in the Fire Science Program in collaboration with the Moraine Area Career System are hosting the day. Local high school students have been invited to experience some aspects of what it is like to be a firefighter, but anyone is invited to come and learn about fire safety.
The program will begin in Building T, Room T816, with a brief presentation, discussion with Moraine Valley Fire Academy students and showcase of the new Fire Science garage facility before participants are broken into groups that will rotate through stations, including fire extinguisher training, forcible entry simulator, fire hose handling, donning firefighting gear and thermal imager. After the demonstrations, students will gather in the parking lot to observe side-by-side burn demonstrations.
The Moraine Valley Fire Academy started in 2011 and provides the initial training required to apply to most suburban fire departments. Unlike many training schools in Illinois, this academy does not require students to have an affiliation with a fire department.
