The Moraine Valley Community College Chorale and Chamber Singers will present its Broadway/Pop/Motion Picture Spectacular! Concert Saturday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m., in the Dorothy Menker Theater inside the college’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills. Tickets are $12; $10 for students and senior citizens.
Following the lead of director Nicholas Thomas, associate professor of music and chair of the Humanities and Fine Arts department, the concert will be a celebration of the college’s 50th anniversary featuring music from the 1960s Broadway shows, pop genre and motion pictures.
Among the performances will be songs from “Hair,” written and performed in 1967, the year Moraine Valley opened, and numbers from “Sweet Charity,” “Man of LaMancha,” “Hello Dolly,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”
Pop tunes will be from the top 100 songs in 1967 including “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” by Frankie Valli, “Never My Love” by The Association, “To Sir with Love” by Lulu, and The Monkees’ “I’m a Believer.” Other featured artists’ songs will include medleys by The Beatles, Peter, Paul and Mary, and many more.
“We’re doing this all in celebration of the college’s anniversary,” Thomas said. “It’s nostalgic and will be a lot of fun for everyone involved, especially with the audience participation.”
