Moraine Valley Community College student Arturo Mazari is among 50 students from across the country named a 2020 Coca-Cola Academic Team Silver Scholar.

Mazari, of Burbank, was selected based on his academic achievement, leadership and engagement in college and community service. The $1,250 scholarship is offered through the Coca-Cola Foundation and administered by the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society. More than 2,000 applications were received, recognizing only 50 gold, 50 silver and 50 bronze scholars.

“I was ecstatic to learn I am going to receive this scholarship,” said Mazari, who will graduate in May from Moraine Valley. “It is going to be a big help to me and my family. To be able to continue my education means the world to me. It really was the best choice for me to attend Moraine Valley.”

Mazari is the vice president of Service for the PTK chapter at Moraine Valley. He also is in the Honors Program and the TRiO Program and works in Student Life helping to coordinate student events. He plans to transfer to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and continue on to medical school to become a doctoring specializing in sports medicine.

“I’m very proud of Arturo for this recognition,” said Kim Golk, academic advisor and PTK advisor. “I can always count on him to keep the team focused and moving forward. He is a natural leader, both on and off-campus.”

Mazari will be recognized at PTK Catalyst, the organization’s annual convention, April 2-4 in Texas, and at the All-State recognition program on April 14 in Springfield, Illinois.
