A mammography technician is trained to operate radiologic equipment used to examine breasts for cancer and other abnormalities. The Mammography Certificate Program is an advanced modality certificate. Applicants must possess a current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification and a current state license from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
The Mammography Certificate Program allows students to gain experience developing and evaluating the quality of finished mammograms. This one-semester, 9-credit hour program is only offered in the spring semester of each academic year.
Health Science programs conduct a rigorous curriculum of lectures, labs, and clinical experiences. Clinical experiences are conducted at a variety of hospitals and medical facilities. All health science programs require clinical time at various health care sites. Clinical assignments require minimally an on-time start, uniforms, liability/health insurance, immunizations, current CPR certification, and understanding of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

This program prepares graduates for professional careers in the medical health field. Graduates are eligible for employment in hospitals, clinics, and physicians’ offices.
In addition to registration costs, students are responsible for the following costs:
- Books: Book costs are estimated at approximately $500. The Moraine Valley Bookstore will have the most accurate information regarding costs.
- Preclinical requirements: Students must meet a set of pre-clinical requirements prior to clinical assignment. Requirements and estimated costs include:
- CPR Training: Students are required to be CPR for Health Care Provider certified to begin RAD 263 - Mammography Clinical Internship. Students who are not already CPR certified must obtain CPR certification as a separate activity during prior to clinical assignment. Moraine Valley offers CPR for health care provider training through Corporate, Community and Continuing Education. The course number is AH8-039 . Students are financially responsible for the CPR training required.
- Physical Examination: Prior to clinical placement, students are required to obtain a physical examination in preparation for RAD 263 - Mammography Clinical Internship. The student is responsible for the cost of the physical examination, and all of the immunizations, blood tests, and tuberculosis tests specified on the physical examination form.
- Health insurance: Moraine Valley Community College requires students to have personal health insurance for the duration of their clinical rotation.
- Drug Screen: Students will be required to submit to and successfully complete a drug screen prior to clinical assignment. Unsuccessful completion of the drug screen requirement may prohibit a student from receiving a clinical assignment, pending physician review of the results.
- Criminal Background Checks: In order to comply with certain state statutes and/or clinical affiliation agreements, students are asked to complete a criminal background check. Students who have an arrest or conviction on their record should consult an attorney regarding expungement procedures. A “clear’ criminal background result is required in most cases. Application forms for criminal background checks may be obtained through the Career Programs Subdivision Office, B150, and fees paid to the Cashier's Office. The cost is $27, subject to change without notice. For information on criminal background application procedures, please contact the Career Programs Subdivision Office at (708) 974-5708. Deadline dates for completion of criminal background checks will be announced by Program Coordinators.
- Transportation: Students are responsible for the cost of transportation to the clinical sites and to the campus.
Program graduates are eligible to take the Mammography Certification Examination offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). This is a national exam.
Successful completion of the Moraine Valley Mammography Certificate Program allows graduates eligibility for licensing by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Division of nuclear Safety. For more information, see Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety (IDNS).
