Director, Oak Prairie Jazz Band
William Rank has been a Music Educator at Oak Prairie JHS since 2005. Mr. Rank co-directs the Oak Prairie Concert Bands, the Oak Prairie Jazz Band and several extra-curricular ensembles. He also teaches semester general music classes in Music Technology. Prior to teaching at Oak Prairie, Mr. Rank taught four years at Scullen Middle School in Naperville. Mr. Rank’s ensembles have consistently received excellent ratings at local and state festivals. In 2011 the Oak Prairie Jazz Band performed at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conference. The following December, the Oak Prairie Jazz Band assisted Jose Diaz, J. Richard Dunscomb and Tony Garcia as a rehearsal lab band at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Mr. Rank received the Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was awarded the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award and is currently on the leadership committee for the Illinois Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance Project. As a freelance saxophonist, Mr. Rank has performed at the World Saxophone Congress and received an Outstanding Soloist Award at the North Texas Jazz Festival. Mr. Rank is an active member in the Illinois Music Educators Association, Illinois Grade School Music Association, National Band Association, and the University of Illinois Alumni Association. He currently performs with the Brass Tracks Jazz Orchestra, the Shout Section Big Band and many other ensembles throughout the Chicagoland area.

Douglass Bratt

Chicago-area percussionist and educator Douglass Bratt has performed at the Jazz à Vienne, North Sea and Montreux Jazz Festivals as well as noted Chicago venues such as the Jazz Showcase, the Green Mill and Millennium Park. He has worked alongside colleagues such as Kyle Asche, Kimberly

Gordon, Stuart Mindeman, Sarah Marie Young, Jo Ann Daugherty, Victor Garcia, Rich Moore and Liam Teague. In addition, Bratt performed with Under the Streetlamp, a group featuring the former Chicago cast of Jersey Boys, in their second national PBS television special. In 2006, Bratt joined with saxophonist/composer, Douglas Stone, to create the Stone/Bratt Big Band, a group dedicated to the performance of original big band music. The band released their full-length album, Stone Bratt Big Band, in 2008.

Bratt has taught students ranging in age from 4 to 80 and has been a clinician/visiting artist at DePaul University, the University of Texas at Arlington, University of Missouri, Truman State University, VanderCook College of Music as well as numerous K-12 programs throughout Illinois. Other invited appearances include guest directing the 2021 Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) District 8 Senior Jazz Ensemble, presenting at the 2014 Illinois Music Education Conference (IMEC) and serving as a panelist for the 2012 and 2017 Percussive Arts Society International Conventions (PASIC). Under his direction, the Moraine Valley Percussion Ensemble was selected to perform at the 2017 IMEC. In 2015 Bratt was inducted into the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Co-Curricular Hall of Fame.

Bratt is a tenured professor of music at Moraine Valley Community College where he serves as coordinator of Academic Music, instructor of applied percussion and directs the college’s jazz ensemble, concert band and percussion ensemble. A strong supporter of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), Bratt was host of the 2016 Illinois PAS Day of Percussion and has served as both president and secretary/treasurer of the Illinois PAS Chapter. Bratt also is proud to be a Remo Education Artist and Balter Mallets Artist.

Bratt received a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in music with an emphasis in percussion performance and pedagogy from Northern Illinois University, where he toured for three years in the acclaimed NIU Jazz Ensemble. Additional scholarship includes a bachelor’s in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and African drumming and dance studies with Ghanaian master-drummer, Frederic Kwasi Dunyo. His principal percussion instructors are Rich Holly, Robert Chappell, Jeff Stitely, Orlando Cotto, Joel Spencer, Jeffrey Moore, and William Elliott, SGM.
