This installment of the FitRec Family Focus Series is centered around the challenge of incorporating New Year’s resolutions, not just for yourself, but also for your family.  FitRec personal trainer and group fitness instructor Sam Dellaportas shares some tips below for how to spread those resolutions throughout your household and help your family gain interest in them.

New Year’s resolutions can seem daunting as an individual, but thinking about changing your entire family’s habits can seem downright impossible. My advice, “Focus on yourself and how you can demonstrate your hard work to them. Your family will follow suit.” Developmental psychologists have always known children learn from imitating adults, and this is a wonderful way to teach healthy lifestyle choices. Here are some effective ways to do this:

1) Be proud of your workouts and TELL your family. When they hear you positively speaking about physical activity in conjunction with going to the gym it will make a huge impact. Find an activity that is FUN. You will be more likely to stick with it as well as pass your enthusiasm onto the kids.

2) Make them a part of food prep. Planning ahead and having healthy food ready when you need it is a huge contributor to successful well-being. Pick a weekend afternoon or night to prep meals and include them in it. Even the smallest ones can pack fresh veggies into containers!

3) Share all your healthy choices with them, especially how you manage stress. For better or worse, this is something they have already picked up on. It’s ok for them to know you are having negative emotions and how you plan to manage them. Explain that yoga class is your “special quiet time,” and running on the treadmill helps “calm your extra energy so you can concentrate.”

In addition to these tips, here are some upcoming events coming to FitRec/KidRec that may be perfect opportunities for your family to stay ACTIVE or work on their fitness goals together.
