The Journey Ahead

While you are a junior high school student, college is probably not at the forefront of your mind. However, there are things you should know and be prepared to ask before starting high school that can set you up for success in the future.  There are programs and partnerships with community colleges that allow you to work toward a certificate or degree while you are attending high school at little or no cost to you. It is well worth it to be educated on what is available to you over the next four years through your school.

Develop Good habits early

The middle school years are critical in creating good habits that will carry over into high school. It is important to lay a solid foundation when it comes to time management and study skills. Moraine Valley offers study skills programs that help prepare grades 7-8 for a successful entrance to high school.

Program topics include: Covers outlining, taking notes, organizing assignments, keeping notebooks in order, using dictionaries and other reference materials, and planning long-range assignments.

DUAL CREDIT AND DUAL ENROLLMENT

When you are in high school you may have the opportunity to take dual credit and dual enrollment classes that allow you to earn college credit either free of cost or at a reduced rate.

  • Dual Credit

Moraine Valley Community College allows high school students to get a jump start on college and save money. Some schools allow high school students to take college classes as a replacement for one or more of the regular high school classes. You can simultaneously earn college credits and complete high school course requirements for high school graduation and a college degree.

  • Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment allows students who are at least 16 years old earn college credit with permission from their high school guidance counselor. Students travel to Moraine Valley Community College’s main campus in Palos Hills, the Southwest Education Center in Tinley Park, or the Education Center at Blue Island during part of the regular high school day, after school, online or even on weekends. You can earn college credit that can fulfill many general education and career course requirements toward their college degree.

Moraine Valley's Biological Sciences program is centered around the study of life and living organisms.

HIGH SCHOOLS THAT PARTNER WITH MORAINE VALLEY

It is important to talk to your school counselor because each school in our district offers a variety of different classes that can be considered dual credit. You can search our list of high schools that we currently offer dual credit to below and see the most up-to-date offerings. AP Courses

Consider taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Many colleges award college credit to students who successfully complete an AP course and receive a certain score on the AP test.

Benefits of DUAL CREDIT and enrollment

1.  Less time to earn a college degree
Taking college classes while in high school will reduce the number of credits you need for your degree when you become a full-time college student. That means you can graduate, take fewer credits each semester or transfer earlier.

2. Save Thousands
Many classes are offered at a reduced rate or no cost to you.

3. Get ahead with Prerequisites
You can get core college courses like introductory English and math classes out of the way in high school, making more room on your full-time college schedule for classes specific to your area of study.

4. Find a Passion
If you’re a high school student who hasn’t yet decided what you want to major in at college, or what college you want to go to, dual enrollment can help you explore your options.
