Our courses are free of charge and prepare students to take the Illinois High School Diploma test. You will cover four subjects: Language Arts, Science, Social Science and Mathematics. The test is available in English or Spanish.

Moraine Valley is a designated testing center for the Illinois High School Diploma test. A person who has not graduated from high school but who successfully passes the Illinois High School Diploma test earns a certificate issued by the Illinois State Board of Education as being equivalent to a high school diploma.

As per the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB), an individual is eligible to take the GED® or HiSET® exam provided they meet all of the following conditions:

  • 18 years of age or older*
  • Does not have a high school diploma and is not currently enrolled in a secondary school
  • Is a resident of the State of Illinois

* Underage testing requirements:

  • If an individual is 17 years old and has been enrolled in a public, private, or a home school setting in the last 12 months, they must present a withdrawal letter from the last high school enrolled in before taking the State of Illinois High School Diploma exam.
  • If homeschooled, the individual must also provide a letter from the person responsible for the homeschooling [e.g., instructor, tutor, parent, guardian, etc.] stating the program has been completed, the individual is no longer required to be homeschooled, and the individual has been cleared to take the State of Illinois High School Diploma exam.

Proof of withdrawal must be given to Moraine Valley Adult Education Department when registering for State of Illinois High School Diploma classes and emailed to hse@illinois.gov or faxed to 312-814-8993.

Constitution
In addition to completion of a high school equivalency exam (GED® or HiSET®), or by using the transcript-based Alternative Method of Credentialing, to earn a State of Illinois High School Diploma, candidates are required to take and pass the Illinois Constitution Test as required by Illinois Compiled Statutes – School Code (105 ILCS 5/27-3).

The Illinois Constitution Module (Constitution Module) is available online for free at http://ilconstitution.org/. It is estimated it will take two hours for a student to complete. It is available for HSE candidates to take independently and does not require proctoring at a testing center. After completion of the Constitution Module, completers will be asked to provide information about themselves that will be used to match with their HSE completion. Completers are also encouraged to print or download a Constitution Module certificate showing the completion.

A student who completed the previous Constitution Test or can demonstrate passing the Constitution Test in high school does not need to complete the Constitution Module.

Anyone who completed and passed an ICCB-approved high school equivalency exam prior to June 30, 2022, will be issued a State of Illinois High School Diploma without the need to complete the Constitution requirement. This was enacted as a COVID pandemic measure to assist testing completers who may have been adversely affected during the pandemic.

If you have any questions, please contact the ICCB at iccb.hse@illinois.gov
