Employment Outlook
Job openings for persons seeking work in loss prevention and as security guards are expected to be plentiful through the year 2008. This is primarily due to high turnover. Many opportunities are expected for persons seeking full-time employment, as well as for those seeking part-time or second jobs at night or on weekends. Some competition, however, is expected for in-house security guard positions. Job growth is expected to be concentrated among contract security guard agencies because engaging the services of a security guard firm can be easier and less costly. Employment potential for Illinois is large and stable. Median annual earnings of guards who worked full time in 1998 were about $16,240. The middle 50 percent between $13,430 and $20,110. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $11,970 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $26,640. Guards generally earn slightly more in urban areas.
