People Who Made a Difference
Moraine Valley Community College faculty members clearly are making a difference in the lives of our students. Here, read some of what our graduates and former students have to say about faculty who helped them find success and make the most of their Moraine Valley education.

Arlene de la Paz-Kane
Coordinator, ASHE Program

“The person who really played an important role in helping make my academic dream a reality was Arlene de la Paz-Kane. I came to Moraine Valley to learn English. I still remember when she was talking to me for the first time and I did not understand a word she was saying. She believed in me and I always will be thankful to her. Every achievement I make in my life will be because of her believing in me. Thank you, Moraine Valley, for having a person like her.”
Sana Abdalla, Orland Park

Dr. Amani Wazwaz
Assistant Professor, Communications/English

“Thanks to Dr. Wazwaz, I was able to get more inspired and decide on my future career. The way she portrays herself in class is simply amazing. I have no words to explain how helpful she was and how she made my experience at Moraine to be the best.”
Irma Amole, Blue Island

Scott Murdoch
Assistant Professor, Biology

“Mr. Murdoch truly was the best professor I have ever had. I went into the class hating biology and walked out at the end of the semester in great awe of how amazing life is. He made such a difference in my life that I actually appreciate science and biology now.”
Amanda Cerf, Oak Lawn

Terry Chambers
Director, Student Support Services

“I believe that Terry Chambers should be commended for all his hard work and dedication he gives his students. He is always willing to help a student out regardless of how busy he is.”
Caroline Sosa, Burbank

Colette Schrank
Instructor, Phlebotomy/Medical Terminology

“Mrs. Schrank was always there for me, as well as for her other phlebotomy students. Whenever possible, she would come to class early or even stay after class was over to lend a helping hand to her students. Whenever I e-mailed her with a question, the next day I would have an answer. She is very dedicated to her work.”
Kim Macauley, Worth

Gail Ditchman
Instructor, Education

“Mrs. Ditchman has been a positive influence in my teaching classes at Moraine Valley. She was always providing interesting stories and examples to make the material being taught worthwhile. She was always prepared for the day and there if you needed to talk to her. I think I learned more in one day of her class than I did in a full year of a class at another university.”
Tara Gutknecht, Orland Park

James E. Greer
Professor/Coordinator, Welding

“Mr. Greer has been a great inspiration to not only me, but also the welding community as a whole. Those who have been taught by him wear his name as a badge of honor: ‘Student of Jim Greer.’ He has not only satisfied my desire to become a professional welder, but also helped to fulfill my dreams to become an instructor, as well. In the years to come, I can only hope to be able to inspire my students as he has me.”
Edward Popelas, Chicago

Theresa Lorenzini
Assistant Professor/Department Chair, Business

“When I started at Moraine, I had no idea what I wanted my career to be. After I took financial accounting with Ms. Lorenzini, there was no doubt about what my career would be. I had always been good with numbers, but Ms. Lorenzini made accounting interesting and easy to learn.”
Alicia Gardas, Tinley Park
