Sample Assignment: Narrative Essay


Class: Honors COM-101

Assignment Name: Narrative Essay and Reflective Response: Analyzing and Dramatizing a Significant Event (showing the meaning of a significant event).

Objective: Critically read, understand, summarize, and analyze the meaning of a significant event. Narrate and dramatize meaningful event in the student’s own life.

Theme: Identity and Incidents as shapers of Identity.

Response: Students will read The Autobiography of Malcolm X. They will select one important incident that Malcolm X experienced. In a reflective response paper, students will summarize this incident and analyze the meaning of this incident in the life of Malcolm X. Students will analyze how this incident may have shaped his thinking and behavior.

Essay: In an essay, students will dramatize a significant event that they themselves have experienced. They will also show how their very own thinking and or behavior changed as a result of this incident.

Response #2: In an in-class essay, students will compare and contrast the meaning of their own experience with Malcolm X's.
