And the beat goes on
Nov. 10, 2008
I’ve been really busy these past several weeks, and there is really no
end in sight. I’m in the process of juggling practice sessions with our
speech coaches, working at Starbucks, applying to Illinois State and
Bradley universities and setting up campus visits. In just a couple of
weeks, I will be selecting my final courses to be taken at Moraine for
spring 2009. Boy, where did these past two years go? With the economy in
such bad shape, it’s been great being at Moraine knowing that the
education I have gotten has been so affordable, but more importantly, so
incredible. I am confident that these four-year colleges will be
impressed with what I have accomplished during my first two years.
Our speech team entered its first competition. The October event is what
kicks off our competition year. It looks like it’s going to be another
great year for the MVCC. speech team. This event was a success for us
individually as well as for the team. Our team received 1st place with
many of our speakers taking home trophies. Our coaches have started off
another year of hard work and dedication. Our next competition is
mid-November and I’m sure it will be another success. I was selected to
be the speech captain for 2008-2009 by our coaches, which is really an
honor.
But – the BIG news for November, my first presidential election. Wow,
gotta say that it was an awesome feeling to walk in and actually have
the opportunity to vote. The process was actually much easier than I
thought it would be. With so many issues facing our nation, I hope that
everyone went out and cast their ballot. I am glad it’s over because I
won’t have to see or hear another commercial – after all, they were
getting a little monotonous.
Just one final note: Don’t forget to register for spring 2009 classes as
soon as you are able so you can get the classes you want. If you’re like
me, and getting ready to move on to another school in fall, make sure to
set up an appointment with an academic advisor to be sure everything is
in order and your final course selection is correct.
Have a great Thanksgiving.
Ciao.
Hey, everyone!
Sept. 29, 2008
Well we are about a month into school and so far it is shaping up to be
another great year at Moraine. So far all of my classes are going well,
and I have met a lot more new people. With the colder months right
around the corner, we have to take advantage of this beautiful weather
while we still can. If anyone is interested, a group of students usually
gets together on Tuesdays and Thursdays randomly between 10 a.m. and 2
p.m. in the quad to play Frisbee. Anyone who is looking for a little
excitement and fun should definitely come on out and play!
As far as extracurricular activities go, Forensics season is right
around the corner. My fellow speech students and I are getting ready for
another exciting and successful year in speech. We have been working on
our speeches for a while now, and I know that we are going to do awesome
at our first tournament!
Well, until next time…
Peace.
Ready—Set—Study
Aug. 19, 2008
Hello again fellow students!
I want to begin this blog by elaborating on those “three” little words
appearing under my picture. Talk about taking a request literally! When
asked to describe three things about myself, I figured they were looking
for three words . . .DUH . . so much for a great GPA. Well, here goes .
. . I am an honest person (and proud of it) who really enjoys people
(which makes me friendly) and I have more energy than anyone else I
know. I love to stay busy and it seems the busier I am, the more I
accomplish. It’s only when there is little to do that I become extremely
lazy; guess I figure I’ve got plenty of time to get very little done.
Some of my fellow “bloggers” have some awesome comments under their
pictures, but modest me will just stick to those three little words. I’m
just the kind of guy you need to get to know because it’s only then that
you will see that I am never short on words. Fall will definitely be a
busy time for me between juggling classes, speech team, work, coaching
and judging speech competitions for Richards High School.
Have you been watching the Olympics? Boy, Phelps sure makes you proud to
be an American. There are a lot of events I’m not crazy about, but the
basketball, swimming and volleyball matches are well worth watching.
After hearing about the amount of money this cost Beijing, I’m not sure
I want to see Chicago go through that kind of debt, although it would be
awesome to have these events right in our own backyard. Anyway, summer
is drawing to a close and fall classes are ready to begin. Bookstore is
open and getting ready for the fall semester.
I have been to campus several times over the summer getting ready for
the upcoming speech tournaments. WOW, wait until you see how far they’ve
gotten with the construction. One thing about Moraine, they are
constantly making improvements – keeping up with the times and the needs
of the students and faculty.
Speaking of faculty . . . I am looking forward to my classes this fall.
One class, in particular, is with a teacher who everyone raves about. I
don’t know that there are any bad teachers here, but once you’re on
campus, you’ll hear students talking about some awesome teachers and you
just keep your fingers crossed that you’ll get the chance to be in their
class.
After this fall, I will only have about 6 credit hours needed to
graduate. The time sure does go fast, so make sure you enjoy every
minute and take advantage of everything this school has to offer. My
only regret is that this isn’t a four-year institution. The thought of
leaving Moraine makes me sad because I felt at home the minute I walked
through the doors. I’m having trouble picking which school I want to
complete my degree at, but like most things with me, it’ll probably wait
until the last minute. Hope to see all of you soon.
Peace Out :)
Making the most of summer
July 11, 2008
Well, it’s only 2 days until my birthday and I have begun to look back
at the year I have had. Overall it has been a wonderful year; I went to
Nationals for speech, maintained a great GPA, and had a lot of fun with
friends. For my grades from the spring semester, I received the
President’s Award for my GPA. Last semester I was on the Dean’s List so
I was really honored. I started a new job at Starbucks and am enjoying
it – they are a great company to work for. Summer has been going pretty
well. I’ve gotten to relax, hang out with friends, and make a little bit
of money. But as much as I love the summer, I kind of miss school. You
get used to a certain routine. I miss seeing some friends that I haven’t
seen in a while, and I especially miss doing speech. As much as I would
like to see everyone and compete in speech, I’m committed to having fun
and making the most of what I have left of the summer. Now that I have
finished reminiscing about the past year, it is time to look forward to
the year at hand. I am looking forward to another year of fun and
excitement at Moraine Valley. If you haven’t registered yet, don’t put
it off any longer ‘cuz chances are the class you want could be filled.
Until next time…
Peace
Welcome to “Weebs” world
June 17, 2008
Hi. This is my first official entry for the MVCC student journals, and
I’m hoping to keep you enlightened, excited and up to date on college
life. As you know, I am beginning my sophomore year at Moraine and if
you’re like I was my first year, you’re not too sure of what to expect.
With the first year under my belt, I can tell you that I am really
pumped for what lies ahead. I was selected to receive an Alumni
scholarship as well as the Adjunct Faculty scholarship from Moraine
Valley for this upcoming school year. Not only was receiving these
scholarships an honor, but what a huge help in the finance department. I
am, of course, going to be doing speech again this year and with that in
mind, the summer is when I have to select topics, begin writing those
speeches and learn new pieces for the upcoming competition year. Finding
a topic can sometimes be easy, but many times you really need to think,
re-think and then get the expert’s opinion on what may or may not work.
The competition is so intense, if your topic isn’t good, then it will be
hard to become a “force to reckon with.” The MVCC speech team is so
highly respected that we must always be ready to bring our “A” game to
each event.
I have contacted a couple of four-year schools for the fall of 2009, and
have been pleased to learn that all of my classes will transfer over. It
is really important to get with the academic advisors and/or counseling
staff at Moraine to make sure you are on the right track from the
beginning. Oh sure, you may change your mind a million times before
picking the program you will stay with, but you need to concentrate on
core classes and then pick up on your electives once you’ve decided on
your major. Although this is an affordable education, there is no sense
taking classes that will not be considered at the next level.
It’s great to meet all of you, and I hope to provide you with the latest
and greatest gossip from around Moraine and around town.

Oak Lawn
Getting to know me
I am born under the sign of
the CRAB, but that’s all that’s crabby about me. I love to joke around,
make people laugh and sometimes, it’s hard for me to be serious. I will
be 19 years old this July and have belonged to St. Catherine of
Alexandria parish in Oak Lawn since that day. I am an only child,
left-handed (which I think means I am creative) and a “wannabe”
comedian. I have trouble doing one thing at a time, which is probably
why I get homework done by watching TV, playing video games, text
messaging friends and eating. I am what you would call a real multi-tasker.
I believe I am making the right move up the ladder; having gone from a
78 person 8th grade graduating class, on to Richards graduation with
400, and now at MVCC, my college stepping stone. I believe I will be
better prepared for the “4 year” college life next year.
I graduated from Harold L. Richards High School in May 2008, was an
Illinois State Scholar, member of NHS and have maintained a 3.86 GPA in
college. I was in speech, drama and improv during all four years of high
school and am glad that I was able to continue performing in college. I
have received numerous medals for speech competitions in the past five
years and feel that these events have afforded me many opportunities. I
am involved in the Honors program that Moraine offers, which is very
challenging and will look very good on a resume. I am a member of our
Speech Team and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything in the
world. I am glad for the high school friends I have stayed close with,
and because of my involvement in speech at MVCC, I have made friends
from all around the US.
Activities
Moraine Valley Speech Team
– The BEST group of students and coaches, Coaching and judging high
school speech events, Ultimate Frisbee/working out a health club, Video
games, Spending time with family and friends, I have recently gotten a
job, so this will be adding to my extracurricular hours.
Best advice for
students considering Moraine Valley
My only advice to anyone
considering attending Moraine Valley, make it your only choice. Sure,
there will be those who will try to convince you that going to a
four-year college is the only way to go for “winners,” but I know I have
gained so much that would not have been possible anywhere else. The
campus layout is great, easily accessible and everyone really cares. The
teachers I have had these past two semesters were great. Bigger isn’t
always better and choosing MVCC is no exception. It’s got a big school
agenda, a big school counseling department, a big school education and a
big school list of clubs, teams and extra-curricular activities. That’s
where the big school stops. It has a small town friendliness coupled
with a more affordable education; remember you’re only skimping on the
cost of education, never the quality at Moraine. We are all constantly
subjected to peer pressure and think it may be a blow to our egos to
attend a junior college. Well, when Moraine is the junior college of
choice, only those who don’t know what this school has to offer will be
the ones giving you other recommendations.
