Hello and Welcome Back!
July 28, 2008
Thanks for tuning in again to "The Life of Kim." If you're a first time
reader, then... thanks for checking this out! Yeah, I haven't written
anything in here in a while, but it's only because there's been a bunch
of stuff going. Update: got a job, went to the Taste to see the Estelle
concert, went to Summerfest to see Ingrid Michaelson and Thievery
Corporation, saw Wanted, Get Smart, Dark Knight, and Step brothers, went
to Ridgefest to check out Hairbanger’s Ball, and I very recently signed
up for the Honors Program at Moraine. I won’t go into detail about all
those things… And since this IS the Moraine Valley Community College
website, let’s talk about their Honors Program.
So, I got a letter saying that I was eligible for the Honors Program
last year but by the time I got the letter, it was way too late, I
already signed up for classes, and I thought I couldn’t get in it
anymore. So for missing out last year, I jumped on the train this year.
Again, I got it too late... but I asked around because I really wanted
to be in it [not to sound nerdy or anything]. But I have a few friends
who took it last year and I’ve heard nothing but awesome news about it.
So I set up a meeting with a very nice lady and she got me in! AND I got
a key chain with a squishy brain on it! SCORE! Yeah, I’m being a little
sarcastic, but I am really glad that I got into the program [and it’s a
pretty sweet key chain]. If you, humble reader, also got a letter for
the Honors Program and you’re still somewhat iffy about doing it… I say
you should give it a shot. There’s no harm in trying…
Moving on, this past Thursday Matthew Weibel [I had to go to the webpage
to make sure I spelled his last name correctly], this guy named Sean [I
believe], and I had a “photo shoot” for the Southtown Star. Yeah, we’re
going to be in the paper and stuff [check it out August 10th]. Southtown
Star always does an article about education, so this year they’re going
to talk about MVCC. It was pretty fun. We walked around campus and the
Student Life Center [located in the C building] and took pictures of us
looking all studious and whatnot, sporting some MVCC apparel, of course.
Got a free shirt. Sweet deal.
Let’s wrap this up. [I have horrible transitions. I know…] I read
Matthew’s journal entry, and I must say that I do agree. I am also
slightly excited for the new school year [also kind of dreading it,
because of all the work and stuff, but mainly excited]. Sounds lame, but
I do miss hanging out with people I haven’t seen in a while and, along
with Matthew, I miss the having a routine and schedule for my days
[sleeping all day and staying up all night isn’t really good for you].
So yeah, if you haven’t registered yet, jump on that. Because the longer
you wait, the less likely you’ll get into the classes that you really
wanted.
Finished. I tried to make this one a little shorter… but I talk too
much. And with that said…I’m out. Thanks for taking the time to read
this, and if you didn’t skim and actually read this entire entry
word-for-word, props to you. But for now, I must bid you adieu.
Peace out!
Let's get this started!
June 26, 2008
Hello Humble Reader!
Thanks for taking some time to read a portion of 'The Life of Kim.'
It’s always hard to get these things started. You already know quite a
bit about me, so let’s steal another student’s starter and ask
the question, “How did you, Kim Saltin, end up at Moraine Valley
Community College?” Well thanks for asking! So, originally I wanted to
follow the footsteps of my older sister and go to U of I in
Urbana-Champaign. But
I realized over the summer [before I actually started college] that I
had no clue to what I wanted to be. So, instead of wasting my parents’
money by going to an expensive university, I figured I should test the
waters first and see what’s out there. And I found out that Moraine
would be my best bet. So here I am today. Well… that was done with
pretty quickly. [haha] No, but I am really glad though that I am
attending Moraine because if not, then I wouldn’t have been able to meet
all the new and different friends that I have now and I wouldn’t have
been able to experience all the fun times I’ve had on the Speech team.
Okay. So I’m sure, if you’re not already familiar with it, you’re
wondering what in the world the Forensics (Speech) Team is. First off,
let’s get two things straight: 1. This type of forensics has nothing to
do with criminal justice or any of that CSI stuff and 2. “Speech” team
doesn’t technically mean that you are debating and writing speeches
everyday. Speech consists of participating in 2-5 events out of 13
events. You can break it down [whickey-whickey] into three sections:
Oral Interpretation, Public Address, and Limited Time Preparation. And
to dumb it down a bit, Oral Interp = acting/prose reading, Public
Address = written speeches, Limited Time Prep = impromptu speaking [this
is for the smart kids] [[not that the kids who don’t do it aren’t smart,
it’s just that you have to know a lot of facts and examples in order to
compete in the event]] [[[not that these kids are nerds…it’s just…they…
I’ll just stop now before I dig myself any deeper]]]. Speech is VERY
competitive and AWESOME. If you don’t like
performing/presenting/speaking in front of an audience, BEWARE. Maybe
this sounds a little lame to you, but if you really knew what goes down
and how intense these tournaments can get, you’ll be so intrigued and
awe-stricken you wouldn’t know what to do with yourself. [Okay, maybe
I’m taking this a little far, but I’m quite passionate about this. Don’t
hate.] Although intense and competitive, these tournaments are also very
fun and interesting. You get to meet a lot of different people from
plenty of other schools, make friends, and see some very fascinating
pieces that can make you cry, laugh, confused, etc. I can tell you now
that if you don’t plan on devoting at least SOME time into practice,
then you won’t be going very far in these tournaments.
Wow, that’s a lot on speech. Hmm, now let’s move on to a subject that
you might be more interested in: SUMMER. SO, some people might see my
summer as not being very productive, but I am enjoying it to the MAX! So
far I’ve attended the Do-Division Street Festival [to see one of my
favorite bands, Tally Hall], two concerts, watched two sunrises
downtown, gone to Looptopia [a 14-hour arts festival including improv
shows, dancing, singing, all that artsy stuff], four open mic nights,
flown plenty of kites, watched plenty of movies, and went to the John
Hancock Observation Deck. It’s weird because although I’ve lived in
Chicago my whole life, like most Chicagoans, I still haven’t been to the
Sears Tower. Things I plan to do over the summer: get a legitimate job,
go to plenty of concerts, check out the sights at the Sears Tower,
audition for the summer play at Moraine Valley, go to the beach and some
water parks, take a road trip to anywhere, and see plenty of plays and
shows in Chicago.
Well, this has been a very long “first entry” and I apologize for any
unexpected feelings of boredom [hopefully that didn’t happen though].
I do hope you tune in again for some more
random, yet highly interesting facts about my time spent at Moraine
Valley Community College. But for now, I must bid you adieu.
So, peace out, chicos! Have a nice day! =]

Getting to know me
Well, hello there! My name
is Kimberly Saltin, and I’m a student at Moraine Valley Community
College. I am a current member of the 3rd-in-the-nation Moraine Valley
Forensics (Speech) Team. I’m really big on the whole acting deal and I’m
currently trying to get more involved with not only Moraine Valley
plays, but also some small production plays in Chicago. Currently, my
goal is to become a psychiatrist. Learning about people, and people in
general, intrigues me. You can find me either at the Forensics office
laughing and/or working or randomly on campus laughing and/or working. I
also help out at Alan B. Shepard High School [my alma mater] by coaching the Speech
Team there, and I also judge high school tournaments when I get a free
weekend.
P.S. I secretly want to be a race car driver, airplane pilot, and an
extra on Law & Order: SVU.
Activities
My current activity
involves being on the Forensics Team. Yeah, we’re a big deal. And I help
coach the Speech Team at Alan B. Shepard High School.
Best advice for
students considering Moraine Valley
The best advice I can give
for students considering Moraine Valley is: do it! If you’re not too
sure on what you want to do in the future, there are plenty of people at
Moraine who can help you and give you advice. At Moraine there are so
many opportunities open to all students, a variety of people and
teachers, and plenty of interesting events that you can take part in.
Take advantage of the opportunities and programs that Moraine offers—you
won’t regret it!
