Welcome back
Feb. 4, 2008

Welcome back, everyone. There are many new students, new classes and new teachers. Moraine Valley Community College is growing and so we want to have many new members of the Arab Student Union. Our plan for this semester is to show all the students that we have many activities so we hope they will want to sign up for our club. Our plan now at Moraine is we would like to start to teach Arabic. We will have our club members do tutoring for students who want help.

One thing I want to mention for our students is that we have the Winter Fest on Wednesday, February 13, from 11a.m.-2 p.m., so come and join everyone at the Student Life Center. There will be many activities and you can learn more about what’s going on around the campus.

We are all at Moraine together, so we all have to work together for Moraine to be the best.

Another Wonder of the World
Dec. 21, 2007

The Arab Student Union sponsored a program for the whole college to learn about Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We had this in the library and our speaker, Mr. Nabil Tadros, was not able to give his speech, so I spoke to the people. I told them about Petra, also called the great temple in the capital city Nabataea, which was built by ancient people during the 6th century. The city of Petra is the center of attention for tourists who come from all over the world to see the temple, ancient museums, canyons and old roads.

We also showed a movie that showed more background on other places you can visit within Jordan. And we had displays of Jordanian clothes and other traditional items. Many people told us thank you for having this lecture and display.

My first entry
Nov. 8, 2007

Hi everybody,

First I want to say I am a person who loves to talk more than write a few sentences on paper, but I am not going to let you get bored from what I am writing down.

I came to the U.S. three years ago from Jordan, one of the Middle East countries. The experience of coming to a different country is big, including a new life style, language, friends, the kind of job, school, etc. All this was something I have to start with from the beginning. The first time I came here, the big problem for me was to talk with people here. The question was where would I learn English?

Moraine Valley Community College, the place that I love, was the first English step of my life. I learned English and I started to go to the regular classes just like the students who were born here and speak English very well. These things gave me a chance to start to be an active student. I am now president of the Arab Student Union, and involved in many events going on in the campus. I hope you enjoy what I wrote, and let’s see what is new for next time.

Getting to know me
My name is Bahaiddeen Assaf. I just moved here from Jordan three years ago and am living with my brother. I am friendly and love to be around people and would like to become a nurse. I also love music and I am an Arabian singer.

Activities
I am involved in a lot of activities at Moraine Valley. For example, I am a singer so I host a lot of parties at Moraine. I am also the president of the Arab Student Union Club and am a soccer player.

Best advice for students considering Moraine Valley
I would recommend Moraine Valley Community College for anyone who is looking to attend school. Moraine Valley has a lot of programs to meet anyone’s need, plus it is a diverse college.
