Phlebotomy—FAQs
When will the next class start?
Spring Semester
PHB-110, Principles and Practice of Phlebotomy, will begin January, 2013. The following classes are tentatively scheduled for spring 2013:
PHB-110-001 is scheduled to meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-5 p.m.; PHB-110-002 is scheduled to meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.;
PHB-110-201 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and PHB-110-202 on Monday and Wednesday from 6.00 - 10.00 pm.
Registration for spring 2013 semester will begin in November 2012.

Summer Session
PHB-110, Principles and Practice of Phlebotomy, will begin the week of May 20, 2013.
The following classes are tentatively scheduled for spring 2013: PHB-110-001 is scheduled to meet Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8 a.m.- 12:15 p.m.,
PHB-110-002 is scheduled to meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12:45-5 p.m. PHB-110-201 is scheduled to meet Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Thursdays from 5:30-9:45 p.m.
Registration for summer 2013 semester will begin in April 2013.

Fall Semester
PHB-110, Principles and Practice of Phlebotomy,
will begin the week of August 26, 2013. The following sections are offered:
PHB-110-002 is tentatively scheduled to meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9
a.m.-1 p.m.; PHB110-001 is tentatively scheduled to meet Mondays and Wednesdays
from 1:00-5.00 p.m.; PHB-110-201 Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-9:30 p.m.
and PHB-110-202 Mondays and Wednesdays from 6–10 p.m.
Registration for fall 2013 semester also will begin in April 2013.

How Do I
Apply to the Program?
No application is necessary. To enter the program, simply register for PHB-110.
Choose from one of the class sections listed above. For
registration
procedures. (in person, telephone, or online).
How Do I
Enroll in the Program?
Select the section of PHB-110 in which you would like to enroll. Register for
the section of PHB-110 you have selected either in person, on the phone (708)
974-2110 or
online.
Does PHB-110 fill
quickly?
Characteristically, PHB-110 fills quickly, so it is in your best interest to
register as soon as possible to assure a seat in the class. See additional
information on
registration procedures or call (708) 974-2110.
If you attempt to register and find that the
seats in the class are all full, don't give up! Often people
register for PHB-110, are unable to attend, and drop the class. Unfortunately,
there is currently no mechanism by which a waiting list can be created.
Therefore, continue to check the enrollments by frequently consulting the
link on the college's web site. Retrieve the
information for PHB-110 and register immediately when you see an
available seat.
When
will I do my clinical training?
Upon successful completion of PHB-110, students may enroll in PHB-111,
Phlebotomy Clinical Practice Seminar and PHB-112, Phlebotomy Clinical Practice.
Students receive clinical experience during PHB-112. The clinical rotations
include 120 clock hours of training at one of the program's clinical affiliate
sites. Clinical opportunities are staggered throughout the semester. For
example, a student who successfully completes PHB-110 during spring 2013 is
eligible for clinical training during summer 2013. Some students will begin
their summer clinical training at the end of May 2013, some in June 2013, and
others at the end of July 2013. A list of the Moraine Valley Community College

How are
clinicals assigned?
Clinical assignments are decided by lottery. Whoever pulls #1 selects their
clinical assignment first, including dates and location. Most students end up
with their first or second choice of clinical assignment.
How much
does the program cost?
The costs listed below are subject to change. Therefore, students should click
on this link for up-to-the minute calculation of
tuition and fee
charges. Costs for the Phlebotomy Program are estimated below:
Costs for PHB-110
Principles and Practice of Phlebotomy — 6 Credit Hours:
- (In-district) Tuition, college activity,
construction/infrastructure, and tech fee-$121/credit hour
- (Out of district) Tuition, college
activity fee, construction/infrastructure, and tech fee-$275/credit hour
- Lab fees-$69.40
- Student ID fee (Added to the cost of the
first credit hour)-$3
Total registration cost for PHB-110:
Students registering for PHB-110 can expect a bill from Moraine Valley Community
College at least for the amounts listed below:
- In-District Students: $798.40
- Out-of-District Students: $1722.40
Additional Costs for PHB-110:
In addition to registration costs, students are responsible for the following
costs:
- Books: The total costs of the
required textbooks is approximately $130; the optional texts are
approximately $88. The books purchased for PHB-110 also will be used in
PHB-111 and PHB-112. Please visit the

$10/box.
Pre-clinical Requirement Costs:
Students must meet a set of pre-clinical requirements prior to clinical
assignment. Usually, students begin meeting the requirements during the second
half of PHB-110, i.e. October in fall semester PHB-110; March in spring semester
PHB-110; July in summer session PHB-110. For maximum options regarding clinical
site selection, students are encouraged to have the following requirements
completed by the end of the semester they are enrolled in PHB-110; i.e.,
December/fall semester; May/spring semester; August/summer session.
The requirements and estimated costs include:
- CPR Training: Students are required
to be CPR for Health Care Provider certified to begin PHB-112. Students who
are not already CPR certified must obtain CPR certification as a separate
activity during PHB-110. Moraine Valley offers CPR for Healthcare Provider
training through the Workforce Development. The course number is AH8-039.

Students are financially responsible for the CPR training required.
- Physical Examination: While
enrolled in PHB-110, students are required to obtain a physical examination
in preparation for PHB-112. The student is responsible for the cost of the
physical examination, and all of the immunizations, blood tests, and
tuberculosis tests specified on the physical examination form.
- Health insurance: Moraine Valley
Community College requires students to have personal health insurance for
the duration of their clinical rotation.
- Drug Screen: Students will be
required to submit to and successfully complete a drug screen prior to
clinical assignment. Unsuccessful completion of the drug screen requirement
may prohibit a student from receiving a clinical assignment, pending
physician review of the results.
- Criminal Background Checks: In
order to comply with certain state statutes and/or clinical affiliation
agreements, students are asked to complete a criminal background check.
Students who have an arrest or conviction on their record should consult an attorney regarding expungement procedures.
A “clear’ criminal background result is required in most cases.
Application forms for criminal background checks may be obtained through the
Career Programs Subdivision Office, B150, and fees paid to the Cashier's
Office. The cost is $27, subject to change without notice. For information
on criminal background application procedures, please contact the Career
Programs Subdivision Office at (708) 974-5708. Deadline dates for
completion of criminal background checks will be announced by Program
Coordinators.
Costs for
PHB-111-Phlebotomy Clinical Practice Seminar — 1 Credit Hour
- (In-district) Tuition, college activity
fee, and tech fee-$121/credit hour
- (Out-of-district) Tuition, college
activity fee, construction/infrastructure, and tech fee-$275/credit hour
- Student ID fee (Added to the cost of the
first credit hour)-$3
Total registration cost for PHB-111:
Students registering for PHB-111 can expect a bill from Moraine Valley Community
College at least for the amounts listed below:
- In-District Students: $124 ($121/credit
hour + $3 student ID fee).
- Out-of-district Students: $278
($275/credit hour + $3 student ID fee).
- Books: The required course packet, on-line review materials and
textbook for this course cost approximately $30. The books used for PHB-110
can be used by the student in PHB-111. An additional optional text is
available in the Bookstore for student purchase. The cost for this optional

Costs for PHB-112,
Phlebotomy Clinical Practice — 2 Credit Hours
- (In-district) Tuition, college activity,
construction/infrastructure, and tech fee-$121/credit hour
- (Out-of-district) Tuition, college
activity, construction/infrastructure, and tech fee-$275/credit hour
- Malpractice fees-$27
Total registration cost for PHB-112:
Students registering for PHB-112 can expect a bill from Moraine Valley Community
College at least for the amounts listed below:
- In-District Students: $272
- Out-of-District Students: $580
Additional Costs of PHB-112
In addition to the registration costs, students are responsible for the
following costs:
- Books: The required course packet
for this course costs approximately $3 The books used for PHB-110 can be
used by the student in PHB-112. Please visit

- Graduation Petition Costs: Students
must petition the college to receive their certificate of completion. The
cost is $15. For
information on graduation petitions.
- Lab Coats/Uniforms: The college
currently requires that students provide their own scrubs for clinical
rotations. If any additional uniform is required by a particular facility,
the student is responsible for providing it. Students are informed about
additional dress code requirements prior to site selection.
- Transportation: Students are
required to provide their own transportation to and from clinical
assignments.
How do I obtain
certification after I have graduated?
Select the certification agency you would like to be certified by. There
are a number of agencies that offer certification to phlebotomists. Please click

a list and a description of agencies that offer certification to
phlebotomists.
Graduates of the Moraine Valley Community College Phlebotomy Program are eligible to challenge any of the certification exams listed on the link above.
How do I obtain
an evaluation of my foreign transcript?
Foreign transcripts must be evaluated to determine if your education is the
equivalent of an American high school diploma. Please allow us to refer you to
the following resources:
First, please call the Moraine Valley Community College International Student
Affairs Department at (708) 974-5334 and request an appointment to have your
foreign transcripts evaluated. Sometimes this department can assist with this
and sometimes they cannot, depending on volume.

contact one of the agencies included on the
ASCP Board of
Registry approved list of evaluation agencies.

The evaluation process may be lengthy, so
please begin as soon as possible. Students are allowed to select a clinical site
with a pending foreign transcript evaluation, but will not be allowed to
graduate until the process is completed.
