Transcription--FAQs
If I register over the Internet, do I still
have to register for classes?
Yes, the internet enrollment begins your process of becoming a student
at Moraine Valley College. It informs us of your intent to pursue the medical
transcription program. The registration process is separate. Therefore you
should register for classes as soon as possible. There is no formal application
process for the medical transcription program.

When do the transcription classes begin?
The actual classes begin in the fall semester. MRT-105 is the beginning
transcription class. The prerequisites for MRT-105 are MRT-110; MRT-111 ,
MRT-130.
Do I need any classes before signing up for
MRT-105?
Yes, you should definitely have taken MRT-110 (Medical Terminology)
before attempting MRT-105. MRT-111 (Health Information Management) and MRT-130
(Computers in Allied Health) may be taken before MRT-105 or during the fall
semester along with MRT-105 with the permission of the instructor.
Can I complete the program in one year?
Yes, if you are willing/able to enroll in two or more courses a
semester.
What kind of salary can I expect upon
graduation?
After graduation, you will be viewed as an apprentice transcriptionist
and will probably earn between $13 and $15 per hour. After you gain experience,
you will be able to earn considerably more.
Is there a certification exam leading to a
professional credential that I will be eligible to take after completing the
program?
Yes, you will be able to take AHDI’s RMT exam. This credential will
assist you in procuring your first job.
Do I have to take the transcription courses
in a particular sequence?
Yes, once you start the transcription program you need to take the
transcription courses in their proper sequence, Fall MRT-105, Spring MRT-106,
Summer MRT-107. The other courses should be taken in the sequence on the
suggested schedule.
How much will the entire program cost me?
Approximately $1000 in tuition and an additional $500-$600 in books. The
books include reference books that will be used on the job after graduation. |
