Health Information Technology--FAQs

Can I complete the Health Information Technology Program part time?
The HIT Program requires general education and career courses. Students who wish to complete the program on a part-time basis are encouraged to take all general education courses first so that the professional courses can be completed within two years.

Can I take courses at night?
The Health Information Technology curriculum includes several courses that are required in the Medical Transcription and Coding Specialist Programs (MRT-110, MRT-111, MRT-112, MRT-119, MRT-120, and MRT-130). These courses may be taken in advance of beginning the HIT Program, with both day and evening sections generally available.

The second year of the HIT curriculum is offered during the day only.

What facilities are used for clinical practicum/internship sites?
HIT students affiliate at various acute care and ambulatory care facilities throughout the Chicago area. Students must be able to provide transportation to affiliation sites.

Will I need to complete a criminal background check for this program?
Yes, in order to comply with certain state statutes and/or clinical affiliation agreements, students are asked to complete a criminal background check.  Application forms for criminal background checks may be obtained through the Career Programs Subdivision Office, B-150, and fees paid to the Bursar’s Office.  For information on criminal background application procedures, please contact the Career Programs Subdivision Office at (708) 974-5708.  Deadline dates for completion of criminal background checks will be announced by Program Coordinators.
