Gerontology—Career Opportunities

Nature of the work—Those trained in gerontology can work with and for older adults in a variety of capacities. From hands-on work such as the position of certified nursing assistant or nurse, to meeting emotional needs via social services roles, to engaging older adults in social pursuits through recreation therapy, the possibilities are endless. Working with others to ensure positive well-being for older adults, those working with this population can address critical health, fitness, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of older adults.

Employment Outlook—As the population of older adults continues to increase, so too do the job opportunities afforded to those who have the knowledge and skill set to work with this population. Skilled Rehabilitation facilities, CCRC’s, and Senior Living Communities are opening new facilities around the country. And as population demographics change, programs geared toward our “Golden Citizens” are created in senior centers, community recreation facilities, and gyms and fitness centers (to name a few).

Salary information—$41,000-54,000 depending on education level and job title.
