Academic Theater and Music

Academic Theater

The Academic Theater Department stages a variety of shows including Broadway musicals, classics and comedies. Each production begins with an open audition process for Moraine Valley students and interested community members.

After Ashley
by Gina Gionfriddo

Friday, Feb. 24-Sunday, March 4
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
John and Angeline Oremus Theater

General Public $12/Seniors, Students and Staff $10
After Ashley is a blisteringly funny and deeply affecting story about a teenage boy navigating the joys and terrors of life—all through the distorting prism of a media firestorm. When a family tragedy deals the Hammond family a dose of dubious celebrity, Justin finds himself paralyzed, unable to fully grieve or grow up. The only bright spot is a girl, only Justin can’t decide if she’s a saving angel or a self-interested groupie. In a world as weird as this one, she might just be both.

No Exit
by Jean-Paul Sartre, adapted from the French by Paul Bowles

Friday, April 27-Sunday, May 6
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
John and Angeline Oremus Theater

General Public $12/Seniors, Students and Staff $10
Jean-Paul Sartre’s classic existential play features three distinctly different (yet perfectly suited for each other) characters who find themselves in a world where they may never sleep, never dream, never let go. The room’s only door offers no escape. No Exit is a disturbingly accurate depiction of human vices and deceptions. It makes the point that the emotional tortures we create for ourselves and for others are far worse than any which could be created in Hell.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
By William Shakespeare

Thursday, July 26-Saturday, July 28
7:30 p.m. each evening
Outdoors at the Gateway

FREE ADMISSION
The delightful romantic comedy of mismatched lovers, enchanted forests and Puck, the famously mischievous sprite, will play out against the dramatic background of the Gateway, a perfect stage for the magic-comic misadventures of the king and queen of the fairies, human lovers and bumbling rustic folk. As Shakespeare himself says, “The course of true love never did run smooth.”
