Steps to Receiving Aid

Academic Standards of Progress for Recipients of Financial Aid

According to federal and state guidelines, you must maintain satisfactory academic progress to be eligible to receive financial assistance.

Moraine Valley Community College has established the following standards of progress for students receiving federal and state financial assistance.

  • To be eligible for financial assistance, you must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or better.

  • You must earn credit for at least 67 percent of the cumulative hours for which you have enrolled.

  • Eligibility for financial aid at Moraine Valley terminates when you have attempted over 93 credit hours.

Credit hours attempted include developmental and remedial courses and transfer credit. Transfer hours from another institution which count toward the completion of your program at Moraine Valley or earned credits at Moraine Valley prior to receiving aid will count in the maximum of 93 hours attempted.

Repeated courses are counted in hours attempted, but the first course taken is not included in the grade point average, and the hours for that course are not added into hours earned.

Courses in which you receive a "W" or "I" grade are counted as hours attempted, but not as hours earned, and are not included in the grade point average.

If you are applying for financial aid for the first time and have a previous history at Moraine Valley you must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or better and have earned at least 67 percent of hours attempted to be eligible for federal/state funds. Your record will be reviewed as if you had been on aid.

Your records will be reviewed at the end of each semester, including the summer session. If your grade point average is below 2.0 and/or you have earned less than 67 percent of the hours attempted, a letter is sent to financial aid recipients that states the following:

  1. The criteria for academic progress has not been met.

  2. The criteria for 67 percent of cumulative credits earned in relation to hours attempted and minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average must be achieved in the next semester of enrollment. If not, you will not eligible for federal and/or state financial assistance until these criteria have been met.

In accordance with the college's default management plan, if you are applying for a Stafford (subsidized or unsubsidized) loan you must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 for the loan to be disbursed. There is no probationary period or appeal procedure for student borrowers with a cumulative grade point average below 2.0.

Procedure for Appeal and Reinstatement

  1. Reinstatement automatically occurs after classes have been taken at your own expense, a 2.0 grade point average has been achieved, and the required percentage of hours attempted have been earned.

  2. If your lack of achievement was caused by unavoidable circumstances, an appeal for reinstatement of eligibility for federal/state funds may be submitted to the Financial Aid Committee. The appeal form is available in the Financial Aid Office. You have the right to meet with the committee regarding the appeal if you do not approve of the committee's decision and have additional information to present to them.

The determination of the appeal is one of the charges of the Financial Aid Committee, composed of the director of Financial Aid, Financial Aid process improvement coordinator, coordinator of Registration and Records, and cashier supervisor.
