Southwest Education Center

Preliminary
site work began in spring 2009 on the Southwest Education Center at
17900 S. 94th Ave., Tinley Park. The $10.5 million project
will be the college’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) certified building. The center opened
in October 2010.
The center, which is approximately 32,000 square feet,
features:
-
Classrooms, science labs, computer rooms and
multipurpose rooms
-
Quiet study
room, and tutoring and testing centers
-
A
cyber café with an outdoor seating area
Bike racks will be
available to encourage alternate modes of transportation.
Some of the LEED features in the building design and surrounding site
include a geothermal heating and cooling system to reduce the building’s
overall energy consumption, and daylighting, sun harvesting and lighting
controls. These daylight-compensating controls will reduce the need for
artificial lighting.
Water-efficient landscaping will utilize native plant
species, vegetative bioswales, porous paving materials and water
retention ponds. Recycled materials will be used throughout the building
wherever possible.
Classes will include a mix of general education,
introductory career courses, noncredit and continuing education classes.
Student support services such as registration, financial aid, and
counseling also will be available.
