Tight roster shows potential for big things in 2014
Things are looking good for the Cyclones in 2014. Between the talented returners
and 20 energetic freshmen, the squad looks ready to surpass their
accomplishments last year.
Taking second in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference with an overall 9-6-1 record was respectable in 2013, but Moraine Valley is excited to face a new season to prove their skills and potentially compete in Spain this spring.
“They’re pushing each other and demanding a high level standard of play already. And with our new training facility—the Health, Fitness & Recreation Center—it’s a dream come true. We have everything we need. We have good quality players from the area, and the returners are excited to be back,” said head coach Chuck Bales in his 15th season at the helm.
All of the returning players will be a major asset. The 2013 All-Region player Jordy Padilla (Eisenhower) and All-Conference player Steve Henry (Oak Lawn) are solid athletes along with sophomores Jorge Martinez (Reavis), Leo Lezama (Argo), Gilberto Andrade (Curie), and Jonatan Sandoval (Bogan). Within the group of talented freshmen are three goalkeepers, any of whom could start.
Because of the quality and energy level of these athletes, the Cyclones are going to play more aggressive this season. The players will press more and defend in the opponents’ half of the field; there will be less sitting back and counter attacking, Bales said.
“We’ll have more possession of the ball. It’s very tiring because to some extent you’re chasing,” Bales said. “There’s not much time in the pre-season to prep, but with nearly 30 guys, we can substitute, and everyone is a quality player. We can pull from the bench.”
Additionally, the Cyclones are starting to fundraise for a trip to Spain this March. Moraine Valley has an international sports exchange program, which has enriched the lives of many of the college’s student-athletes. Over the years the men’s soccer team has competed in Rotterdam, Holland; Nürnberg, Germany; and Milan, Italy.
