NJCAA Division II All-American: Ryan Frederick (Lockport)
*Denotes Conference June 1, 2012 Cyclones finish 12th in nationals, one golfer earns All-American The Cyclones golf team has been out of the spotlight throughout the winter, but they made some noise in the spring. After a stellar fall that saw Moraine Valley earn the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship and a second place finish in the NJCAA Region IV tournament, the squad recently returned from a trip to the national tournament in Plymouth, Indiana. Moraine Valley competed as a team for the second time in the college’s history at nationals, May 22-25, at Swan Lake Resort. The team tied for 12th in a very competitive event—their best finish yet, said coach Bob Freudenthal. Even with golfer Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) unable to compete on the last day because of an injury, the team still finished well. All-Conference player Ryan Frederick (Lockport) placed 13th among 128 golfers in the country and became an All-American and All-Tournament player. The course was not easy, but the Cyclones ended the first day of competition in 10th place with a 308 total score and Kenny Feldmeier (Providence) leading the way with a 76. He had five birdies and played his best tournament of the year. He was followed closely by Frederick (77), Brendan Ryan (Shepard) (77), Fraser (78), and John Beissman (Lockport) (87). Although the weather was decent for the second day of the tournament, the Cyclones played their worst, finishing with a 318. Frederick led with 75 followed by a very consistent Ryan (76), Fraser (82), Feldmeier (85), and Beissman (85). The third day was gusty with 40 mile-per-hour winds, but the Cyclones played solid, scoring a collective 312. Feldmeier bounced back with a 77, shooting a straight ball and hitting fairways and greens all day. Frederick and Fraser followed with 78 and Ryan hit 79 while Beissman finished with an 86. Frederick was aiming to be an All-American player and proved he deserved as much by shooting a 70, two under par, on the last day of the tournament. Ryan, who missed being an All-American by one shot, also had his lowest, a 73, followed by Feldmeier (76) and Beissman (86). “I’m very proud of Frederick, and the whole bunch. This was the best finish we’ve had at nationals and the first time we’ve ever had an All-American golfer at Moraine Valley,” Freudenthal said. “Frederick is a heck of a golfer. Overall, it was satisfying to see how well we did. This is without a doubt the best golf team in Moraine Valley’s history.”
October 10, 2011 Not only do the 2011 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference champs have an NJCAA Region IV medalist on the squad, but just qualified as a team for the national tournament in May. This is just the second time the entire team has earned a berth to the nationals. The Cyclones took second place in the NJCAA Region IV Tournament at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron, Oct. 6-8, just two shots behind first place Black Hawk College. The finish qualified the team for nationals in Plymouth, Indiana. Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central) has had a stellar year on the links, made more impressive by his medaling in the tournament, the first time in four years that a Black Hawk College golfer has not finished at the top. He beat the field by eight shots and is easily the best golfer Moraine Valley has had in the program's 28-year existence, said coach Bob Freudenthal. He was named All-Region player of the year with his scores of 71, 77 and 73. Palonis medaled five times this season. Ryan Frederick (Lockport) finished eighth in the region with 78, 81 and 78. He along with Palonis were named co-MVPs by Freudenthal for their equally skilled season with the Cyclones. Rounding out the team score were Brendan Ryan (Shepard) with 81, 79, 85; Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) who shot 82, 87 and 79; and John Beissman (Lockport) who had 83, 82, 85. This region tournament ends the regular season for the Cyclones, who had three first place finishes in various tournaments this year. Frederick also earned first All-Conference honors while Palonis was second. "This was a great, successful season, and I'm more than happy with the way these guys played," Freudenthal said. "I'm looking forward to nationals. It'll be a great experience and the competition will be stiff, but we'll be up to the task."
October 3, 2011 Despite their surprising fourth place finish Sept. 30 at the Prairie View Classic at the PrairieView Golf Club in Byron, the men's golf team played a respectable game and feel good heading into the NJCAA Region IV tournament. The Cyclones were just one shot shy of third place in the 16-team field and at some point this year have defeated all three colleges that finished ahead of them. Ryan Frederick (Lockport) led Moraine Valley with a 74- finishing third among all golfers- followed by Brendan Ryan (Shepard) with 77, Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central) who hit 78, Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) with 83, and John Beissman (Lockport) with 83. "Golf is a fickle game, but we played respectable and I feel good about our chances at the regional tournament," said coach Bob Freudenthal. "Our conference has dominated most of these invitationals this season, and we've beaten these teams before and are capable of beating them again. One of our top players is injured, but we're still playing well and I feel pretty good." The Region IV tournament is Oct. 6-8.
September 26, 2011 Competition remains fierce for the Cyclones who couldn't reclaim their top finish at the Sauk Valley Skyhawk Invitational in Sterling on Sept. 23 where they were the reigning champs in 2010. The team did place third out of 13 teams, just two shots out of second on a windy and cold day. Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central) finished on even par, 72, for the Cyclones followed by Ryan Frederick (Lockport) who shot 76, Brendan Ryan (Shepard) with 77, and Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) with 79. "We played well and had a good showing, but this just shows you that our conference in strong. College of Lake County won, and they haven't beaten us all year. But it is a good warm up for the NJCAA Region IV tournament. Now we have to put up or shut up as they say," said coach Bob Freudenthal. "We did beat our arch rivals Black Hawk College and Carl Sandburg College. I'm still optimistic, but the competition is there."
September 22, 2011 They finished second in this last Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference tournament, but the Cyclones are on top of the conference once again as the champions. The team sealed their fate Sept. 21 at the Highlands Golf Course in Elgin. Because of their overall standing, the Cyclones clinched the championship for the third time in four years. "It was a good day on a hard course and on a windy day," said coach Bob Freudenthal, who also was named conference coach of the year. "It's been a great season, but it's not over yet." Ryan Frederick (Lockport) was the low scorer with a 73 and medalist for the day. His consistency and 73 average in the conference this season earned him first All-Conference honors and named All-Conference player of the year. Frederick's average was only a half stroke better than second All-Conference golfer Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central) who shot a 77 in the tourney. "I can't recall the last time I had the top two players in the conference, but we do this year, and it's a good feeling," Freudenthal said. The remaining Cyclones finished with solid scores at Elgin. John Beissman (Lockport) shot a 76, his best of the year; Brendan Ryan (Shepard) finished with a 79; and Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) ended the day with 82. Once again Moraine Valley did not have its full contingent of top players with one out due to an injury but still won the conference. They still have work to do at the Sauk Valley Skyhawk Invitational on Friday where they enter as defending champs. "We're happy that we won the conference, but we're back at work for Sauk Valley, and then we need to get ready for the NJCAA Region IV tournament. We have a lot of work to do," Freudenthal said. "I have to reiterate that this is the strongest the conference has ever been and the strongest the region has been. There are a lot of teams that could win the regional tournament. At least we're one of those teams in contention. It'll be fun and a challenge at regionals next month. We hope to put it all together."
September 20, 2011 Even without all their top players in tow, the Cyclones were able to take first place Sept. 19 in one of their last Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference matches this season. In a day that started cool and damp on the Shepherd's Crook Golf Club in Zion, Moraine Valley turned in another great performance to maintain their first place standing in the conference. Ryan Frederick (Lockport) was the top Cyclones and medaled with a 72 on the par 71 course. Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) followed with an excellent score of 74, Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central) hit 77, Brendan Ryan (Shepard) had 81, and John Beissman (Lockport) hit an 85 for the day. "It was a great performance by the guys on one of the hardest courses we play on all year. They're good players and good guys," said coach Bob Freudenthal. "I think teams in the conference and region are the strongest they've ever been, and competition is tough." The Cyclones have one last conference match on Wednesday at Elgin, and a high finish will solidify a conference championship.
September 15, 2011 The game of golf always has an element of the unexpected, and the Cyclones experienced that on Sept. 14 in their latest Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course where they finished second. A force to be reckoned with so far this season, the Cyclones have the talent to take first in all their conference matches, but came up short this time. Unlikely winner Prairie State College upset the field, but that's the nature of the game, said coach Bob Freudenthal. Top Cyclones, Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central), was out of sorts with the course and finished with an 80. Kenny Feldmeier (Providence) played well, shooting the low score for Moraine Valley with a 74. He was followed by Ryan Frederick (Lockport) who had 75 and a consistent Brendan Ryan (Shepard) with 79. "We're still in first place in the conference. I know the guys were a little disappointed with this match, but they still feel pretty good," Freudenthal said. "Next week will be a busy one with two conference matches and the Sauk Valley Skyhawk Invitational, where we're the defending champs. I think the guys are ready for it."
September 14, 2011 The competition was stiff Sept. 13, but the Cyclones held their own at the St. Francis Fall Classic. Moraine Valley utilized some reserve players and finished 16th out of 19 teams, many of which were four-year institutions. Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central) hit a 73, just one over par, tying for sixth among 104 golfers. Casey Kaplan (Chaparral) made his debut with an 83 followed by sophomore Jeff Siefert (Marist) with 87, Steve Frencl (Reavis) at 87, and Quinn Sweeney (St. Rita) with 89. "This was tough competition against almost all four-year schools, some really good teams. It was a respectable finish and I'm not disappointed," said coach Bob Freudenthal.
September 13, 2011
September 12, 2011 As the Cyclones maintain their high-level playing, their number one player, Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central), continues his streak of medaling with the lowest score in each tournament he enters. Palonis medaled once again Sept. 9 at the Duane Chanay Invitational and helped his team to a sixth place finish out of 19 teams. It was tough competition but Palonis shot a 69 with one eagle and four birdies, averaging one under par for the season. This was the best individual scoring in the history of Moraine Valley golf, said coach Bob Freudenthal. John Beissman (Lockport) hit a 76 followed by Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) with 77 and Kenny Feldmeier (Providence) hitting a 78.
September 8, 2011 The Cyclones continue to top their tournaments this fall with their latest coming Sept. 7 at a windy Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match at Mission Hills Country Club in Northbrook. Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central) is on fire, medaling in his third straight tournament by hitting 71, one under par. "He's the hottest golfer I've had on any team, he's just smoking everyone right now," said coach Bob Freudenthal. Ryan Frederick (Lockport) shot even par at 72 followed by Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) hitting 79 and Kenny Feldmeier (Providence) with 80. Even with a top golfer absent from the team at this tournament, the Cyclones scored a total 302 with College of Lake County coming up with 309. "The wind was constantly changing and there were gusts of up to 30 mph, so it was not easy," Freudenthal said. "We're looking good, but still have a ways to go. Lake County is still a team to be reckoned with because they're consistent. We have a few more conference matches to go, but I'm optimistic."
September 1, 2011
August 29, 2011 If their first tournament is any indicator, than the Cyclones are going to have a fine year on the links. Moraine Valley opened up their season Aug. 26 at Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport at the Highland 36 Tournament, the oldest community college tournament in the country. In a tough field of 18 competitors from the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and NJCAA Region IV, the Cyclones finished second, just one point ahead of nemesis Black Hawk College. This was the best finish in this tournament for Moraine Valley, said coach Bob Freudenthal. The top scoring Cyclones, Ricky Palonis (Lincoln-Way Central), also medaled by being the lowest scorer of the tournament with a 73 and 71 even par. He also had seven birdies. Following him were Brendan Ryan (Shepard) with 76 and 74, Ryan Frederick (Lockport) shooting 78 and 76, Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) with 76 and 82, and Kenny Feldmeier (Providence) hitting 81 and 79. "It was one of the best days we've had, weather-wise, for this tournament, and it was a great day for the Cyclones right out of the box. We played against all the teams from our conference and region so we're looking good so far. Our top three guys are really solid," Freudenthal said. "We're off to a good start, but we have a long way to go. We need to focus on one tournament at a time."
August 25, 2011 With their top golfer graduated, the Cyclones aren't worried, not when the top six players can shoot in the 70s regularly. The outlook is good for the 2011 golf team, not only due in part to last season's number two player back in the lineup, but also with some potent recruits. A 2010 All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference selection, Brendan Ryan (Shepard) is expected to be the top golfer this season. He helped his team take the Sauk Valley Skyhawk Invitational last year and is aiming to shoot even better to get his team back on top of the conference. Jeff Siefert (Marist) also returns with experience and potential to have a breakout season. "You never know what he can do if he puts his mind to it," said head coach Bob Freudenthal. After taking a year off, John Beissman (Lockport), who was an All-Conference player in 2009, returns to the team. His experience playing for the Cyclones and helping the team earn the conference championship will be an asset this year. Pushing for that coveted number one player position is freshman and solid golfer Ryan Frederick (Lockport). He is a transfer student who played in numerous Chicago District Golf Association tournaments throughout the summer and won a contest in Galesburg, Freudenthal said. Other newcomers include Ricky Palonis, who was the number one player at his alma mater, Lincoln-Way Central High School, and is a solid shooter out of the box; Casey Kaplan (Chaparral), who also was a top player at his Arizona high school that won the state championship; Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North), another top golfer that should bring solid scores to the Cyclones; Kenneth Feldmeier (Providence), a transfer student; Quinn Sweeney (St. Rita); and Steve Frencl (Reavis). "If our top five, six guys play to their potential then we have an excellent chance to win the conference again and qualify for nationals. On paper it looks good. We have a really strong team," Freudenthal said. "This may be one of the strongest team's we've had and is comparable to our past successful teams. I'm looking forward to the season and ready to get going."
July 27, 2011 Tryouts are being held for the Moraine Valley men's golf team on Wednesday, August 17 at 1 p.m. at the Water's Edge Golf Club located at 115th Street and Harlem Ave. For more information call golf coach Bob Freudenthal at (708) 974-5582. 2010 Season

May
23, 2011 After a stellar two-year career of golf at Moraine Valley, Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) officially ended his days as a Cyclones in the NJCAA Division II Nationals, May 17-20, in Scottsboro, Ala. Lovelace finished in 87th place out of 127 competitors nationwide. "He averaged 78 and finished among some of the top junior college golfers in the country, and perhaps the world because a group of golfers in this tournament were international players," said Cyclones coach Bob Freudenthal. "This was a really good competition, tough, but he was very consistent." After qualifying for nationals in October in the Region IV tournament, Lovelace, the lone qualifier from Moraine Valley, continued to train throughout the winter. His average was two shots lower than his appearance in the 2010 national tournament. Lovelace qualified for nationals and was named to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and All-Region IV teams in his two years on Moraine Valley's golf team. "Matt has had a very successful career. He was our number one guy for two years. He's going to Trinity Christian College on a golf scholarship and will probably be one of their best players," Freudenthal said. "The key to his success is his short game; he's a solid putter. He's a fine fellow to work with, consistent, easy to coach, and a team leader. He will be missed." Freudenthal will continue recruiting players in the off-season and looks to returning golfer Brendan Ryan (Shepard) as his top player in the fall.
March
23, 2011 Top Cyclones Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township), who qualified for the NJCAA tournament next month, is headed to Trinity Christian College in the fall. Lovelace earned a scholarship to play golf and continue his education at Trinity, where he'll major in education. "He'll be one of their stalwarts there. He's as good a guy as he is a player and a coach's dream," said golf coach Bob Freudenthal.
October
14, 2010 Highlighted by a tournament win, the Cyclones golf team's season has come to a close, except for one national qualifier. The team had some ups and downs in 2010 but managed to play well in their final match, the NJCAA Region IV Tournament, Oct. 7-9, where they finished fourth out of 11 teams. Seeded seventh, the Cyclones vacillated between third and fourth place for the duration of the tournament and were out of third place by just two shots. "The top two teams were loaded, but I was really happy with our finish," said coach Bob Freudenthal. For the second consecutive year, Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) performed well enough to qualify for the NJCAA tournament in Alabama, where he will be competing in May 2011. He finished seventh overall with scores of 73, 82 and 77. "The first day he played really well and helped our team score," Freudenthal said. "I'm happy for Matt. He's a great kid and deserves this." Teammates Ryan Collins (Oak Forest) shot 86, 77 and 87, Bobby Isaacson (Andrew) finished with 77, 86 and 88, Bob Love (Bogan) shot 81, 82 and 80, and Brendan Ryan (Shepard) had 80, 79, 80 to contribute to the team tally. On the first day Isaacson had four birdies while Lovelace had five, and on day two Collins golfed his best round of the year. The Cyclones ended their season in third place in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and finished in the top three for several matches, including winning the Sauk Valley Skyhawk Invitational on Sept. 24. "Winning a tournament is a big deal, and we haven't done that in a few years. That was the highlight of the season. Overall, we had a respectable season, pretty good considering there were some struggles this year and the talent level was way up," Freudenthal said. "We're saying goodbye to seven players, so we're going to miss those guys. I'm looking forward to next season. We'll have our two starters, Love and Ryan, returning."
October
2, 2010 After coming off a high of winning their first tournament in several years, the golf team struggled at the PrairieView Classic in Byron, Illinois on Oct. 1. The Cyclones placed 13th out of 15 teams. The top score for the 'Clones was Brendan Ryan (Shepard) with an 80 followed by Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) who shot 85, Jason Fonte (Stagg) who came in at 86, and Bob Love (Bogan) finishing with 88. "It was a rough day for us. Nothing clicked. It was a little let down after our big tournament win, but they'll bounce back for the Region IV tournament at the end of the week. We look forward to it, and I think they'll bring their A-game," said coach Bob Freudenthal.
Call them the team that performs in unfavorable weather. The team that last year qualified two golfers for nationals in snow and cold temperatures. On Sept. 24 Moraine Valley's golf team topped the Sauk Valley Skyhawk Invitational in wind gusts of up to 40 mph. In a tournament that involved two conferences, one of which was the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference, the Cyclones defeated all the best golf teams in northern Illinois, said coach Bob Freudenthal. "In tough conditions, we rose to the occasion. It was a great day. I'm really happy and proud of this team. Our performance was pretty impressive. We won by seven shots so no one was close to us," he said. The top two scorers and medalists for the tournament were Cyclones Bobby Isaacson (Andrew) and Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township), who shot a 73 and 74, respectively. Brendan Ryan (Shepard) shot an 80 and Bob Love (Bogan) hit an 85 to round out the team score for the trophy. "This was our first tournament win in several years, so this is a major win for us," Freudenthal said. "I'm looking forward to the last couple of weeks to see what else we can do."
September 23, 2010 The season isn't over yet, but the Cyclones solidified their third place standing in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference after finishing third at their home course Sept. 22. Moraine Valley couldn't quite swing to a third consecutive conference championship, but played well among tough competition. Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) topped the team again hitting 75, followed by Brendan Ryan (Shepard) with 80, Bob Love (Bogan) hitting 81 and Ryan Collins (Oak Forest), who swung to an 85. For their season-long playing to date, Lovelace and Ryan were named to the All-Conference team. Lovelace was third in the conference for his 77 average while Ryan finished 10th with a 79 average. Lovelace earned All-Conference honors last year as well. "[Lovelace and Ryan] played very respectable for Moraine Valley. They're like our co-MVPs," said coach Bob Freudenthal. "I'm a little disappointed with how we finished and wanted to defend our conference championship, but these things happen. It was a good conference season. We're looking forward to regionals now, and hope to play our best. Some of our guys still have potential to qualify for the national tournament."
September 21, 2010 After struggling the last few outings, the Cyclones were back in top form Sept. 20 as they placed second in another conference matchup at College of Lake County. They were just two shots out of first place. Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) found his swing, shooting a 78. On his heels was Brendan Ryan (Shepard), who hit 79, Bob Love (Bogan) with 80 and Bobby Isaacson (Andrew) hitting 81. "It was a good day for Moraine Valley. It was our best conference match of the season," said coach Bob Freudenthal. "I was happy with the way the guys played. Now I hope we can win the last conference match."
September 16, 2010 After golfers showed some decent scores the day prior, coach Bob Freudenthal mixed the lineup again for the Cyclones' fourth conference outing Sept. 15 at Elgin Community College. Results were not ideal, however, as Moraine Valley placed fourth. Bobby Isaacson (Andrew) ended the day with 79, the second lowest score out of all the teams. Brendan Ryan (Shepard) followed with 83. Normally the team leader, Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township), who has run into a bit of a slump, shot 87. "Matt should bounce back. We're all a little frustrated with our playing, but we're working hard and working for a respectable finish this season," Freudenthal said.
September 15, 2010
September 14, 2010 The Cyclones finished third again in their third conference match at Waubonsee Community College Sept. 13. The low shooter for Moraine Valley was freshman Brendan Ryan (Shepard) who shot a 78 and tied for the best score out of all the teams. Bobby Isaacson (Andrew) was next with 85, followed by Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) 85, Bob Love (Bogan) with 86, and Zac Yaeger (Lockport) 89.
September 13, 2010
The competition is tough this
season, as evidenced by the Cyclones' 14th place finish Sept. 10
at the Duane Chanay Invitational. "The competition is way up from last year. There are some excellent teams in our conference and region," said coach Bob Freudenthal. "We didn't do too bad on a day when the course was dry, making it difficult to play on. All the scores were up. It was a rough day, but we have a lot left in the season."
September 9, 2010 The men's golf team placed third, for the second time this season, at Prairie State College Sept. 8. The final result wasn't bad, but not quite what coach Bob Freudenthal hoped, especially with his talented team this season. Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) was the top shooter with a 78. Brendan Ryan (Shepard) followed with 80, while Zac Yaeger (Lockport) swung an 82 and Bobby Isaacson (Andrew) held tight with 83.
September 2, 2010 It wasn't the ideal finish, but the Cyclones played well Sept. 1 with four golfers hitting in the 70s to end up in third place at Oakton Community College. The 'Clones missed first place by five strokes and second by just two strokes. Bob Love (Bogan) led the charge shooting 72 followed close by Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) with 73. Both Brendan Ryan (Shepard) and Zac Yaeger (Lockport) hit 79 while Bobby Isaacson (Andrew) racked up 82. "It's not like Bobby to shoot that high, his average is at least 78, 79. Overall we played well, but I know we can pick up our game," said coach Bob Freudenthal. "I'm still optimistic, but we have our work cut out for us."

May 26, 2010 Consistency and focus helped Cyclones golfer Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) swing to a respectable 97th place finish in the NJCAA Division II Golf Championship held in Phoenix, Arizona May 18-21. In a field of 130 talented golfers from across the country, Lovelace shot 80, 82, 80, and 78 under hot and windy conditions, improving with each stroke. "Everything was great. The tournament was a lot of fun, and I felt I played all right. I didn't think about the pressure of playing at nationals. I just played my best," Lovelace said. "I definitely want to go back next year because I know what to expect." Lovelace qualified for the event in October after placing seventh in the Region IV Tournament. His teammate, Kevin Daly (Oak Forest), placed third also qualifying, but was unable to compete in Arizona. This was Lovelace's first time playing in the championship. "Not a bad finish considering there were 130 players. He was consistent and played really well," said head golf coach Bob Freudenthal. "He went from qualifying for the nationals in October in the snow to competing in 90 degree weather. You have to have a pretty strong constitution to do that. This is a good ending to the season." With national tournament experience under his belt and a slate of amateur tournaments over the summer, Lovelace will be a good team leader for the Cyclones golf team in the fall. "He'll be our number one player in fall. I look forward to next season with Matt leading the way. He's a good player and team leader. It's a rare combination. With a couple other guys coming back I'm looking forward to a three-peat as Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference champions," Freudenthal said.
May 12, 2010 Golfer Matt Lovelace is gearing up to head to Phoenix, AZ for the NJCAA Division II Golf Championship, which he qualified for last October. Lovelace placed seventh in the Region IV Tournament Oct. 8-10 while fellow teammate Kevin Daly placed third qualifying them both for nationals. However, Daly is unable to compete. Lovelace and Cyclones golf coach Bob Freudenthal fly out this weekend to the tournament which runs May 18-21. "Matt will do a great job down there. He's been in tournaments and practicing all spring so he's ready. He's in good shape," Freudenthal said. "He has a lot of potential and he'll hold his own in this very competitive tournament." The Cyclones golf team was the 2009 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Champion, and Lovelace was named to the All-Region IV and All-Conference teams.
October 13, 2009 In rain, snow and cold temperatures, the Cyclones ended a stellar golf season at the Region IV Tournament at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron, Illinois Oct. 8-10, finishing fourth out of 10 teams with two players qualifying for the NJCAA championships. "They did very well considering the conditions. It was dark, dreary and cold and by the third day it was 37 degrees with snow flurries. We got the most out of our team and qualified two for nationals. Our top two guys did their thing," said coach Bob Freudenthal. Kevin Daly (Oak Forest) shot a 79, 78 and 76 to earn a third place individual finish while teammate Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) swung a 77, 79 and 80 to place seventh. Both scores earned them a trip to the NJCAA Division II Golf Championship in Phoenix, AZ in May. Other Cyclones golfers who competed include Stagg grad Tim Komenda (78, 80, 86), Logan Pietsch (Sandburg) (83, 84, 92) and Lockport product John Beissman (91, 83, 86). The Cyclones played well this season, clinching their second consecutive Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship on Sept. 30 in their final conference match. "It was a very successful season, and I'm very pleased with how we played. We took conference again and two guys are going to nationals," Freudenthal said. "I'm looking forward to the national tournament in May. Kevin and Matt are two excellent players, and I know they'll do well. They're both very mature and could play at the next level. They'll work over the winter then we'll get together in May before heading to Phoenix. Then hopefully we'll have another great year and conference win in 2010." The national competition is scheduled to be held May 18-21.
October 5, 2009 In preparation for the Region IV Tournament Oct. 8-10, the Cyclones competed Oct. 2 in the Prairie View Classic, where they placed eighth out of 17 strong teams. Moraine Valley was led by sophomore Jeff Staley (Andrew) who swung an 80 followed by Tim Komenda (Stagg) with an 81, Kevin Daly (Oak Forest) hitting an 81, Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) firing 82, and John Beissman (Lockport) shooting an 82. The scores seem a bit higher, but were good considering weather conditions were rainy with 20 mph winds and 50 degree temperatures.
October 1, 2009 Call them the champs because for the second consecutive year the men's golf team has aced their conference. Moraine Valley clinched the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship Sept. 30 by placing first in the final conference match of the season at Mission Hills Country Club in Northbrook. "It was a good day and I think the guys were pretty happy about the win," said head coach Bob Freudenthal. "Overall it was a successful season. They've played well at the right times. We played well and now we're looking forward to the region tournament next week. There are good teams there, but we'll be very competitive." Scoring a team average of 318 at the tournament, the top player of all eight colleges competing was Kevin Daly (Oak Forest) who shot a 75 followed by Stagg alum Tim Komenda with 79, Logan Pietsch (Sandburg) hitting 79, Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) with 80, and Lockport product John Beissman firing an 81. Ten conference golfers earned All-Conference honors, four of whom were from Moraine Valley. Daly was number two with a 75-shot average, only half a shot behind first. Lovelace came in at number three with a 78 average, Komenda also had a 78 average and finished fifth, and Beissman rounded out the bunch in 10th with an 81-shot average. Freudenthal also was named 2009 Conference Coach of the Year. "Daly got off to a slow start this season, but worked hard, became more comfortable and found his game. These are a great bunch of guys and I'm lucky to have a good group two years in a row," Freudenthal said. "This is the oldest team I've had. Tim Komenda came back here after playing for me three years ago, Kevin Daly is a transfer student and Matt Lovelace is 27. I think the maturity level helps." The Cyclones compete Friday, Oct. 2 to prepare for the Region IV Tournament Oct. 8-10. The top two teams from that competition advance to the national championship, which the Cyclones achieved last year.
September 25, 2009 The Cyclones maintained their top status in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference by placing second in their latest outing at College of Lake County's home course on Sept. 23. The team was a mere eight points from first, but is still in good position to take their second consecutive conference championship when they finish their final conference match Sept. 30. Tim Komenda (Stagg) shot his best round of the season with a 76. Kevin Daly (Oak Forest) and Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) shot a 78 and 79, respectively while Jeff Staley (Andrew) rounded out the scoring with an 85.
September 22, 2009 In another close match up the Cyclones finished first at Elgin Community College's home course Sept. 21. Moraine Valley tied with Elgin, but won based on the tiebreaker being the best score of the fifth golfer on each team. Tim Komenda (Stagg) shot an 81 to seal the win. The other Cyclones contributing to the victory were Kevin Daly (Oak Forest) leading with a 75, Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) shooting 76, Jeff Staley (Andrew) with 78, and John Beissman (Lockport) with a 79. "It was a pretty exciting match, but we won our third conference match out of four so far this season. We're holding our own in first place overall in the conference," said coach Bob Freudenthal.
September 17, 2009 In their third conference match up, the Cyclones couldn't pull off another first place finish, instead taking third place Sept. 16 in Aurora. Scoring was made more difficult by 30 mph winds, but Kevin Daly (Oak Forest) shot 83 and led the way with one of his best tournaments this season. Other key golfers were Jeff Staley (Andrew) with 86, Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) shooting an 86 and John Beissman (Lockport) firing an 88.

September 8, 2009 "A few guys just lost focus. They didn't putt well, which was a big factor. One of our veteran players, Logan Pietsch (Sandburg), was out with a back injury," said coach Bob Freudenthal. "The course was good and it was theirs for the taking. I'd rather have a letdown at an invitational like this than at a conference match. This was a big letdown, and we're a much better team than we showed. We'll shape up, and I know we'll bounce back with our hectic schedule coming up." Tim Komenda (Stagg) led the team with a 78, Jeff Staley (Andrew) shot an 80, Kevin Daly (Oak Forest) finished with 82, and Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) shot 87.
September 1, 2009 The Cyclones did not fail to impress in their first two matches of the year. The team finished fifth in a field of 20 on Aug. 28 at the Highland Tournament. The top two golfers, Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township) and Jeff Staley (Andrew), led the team through a wet 36 holes of golf. Lovelace finished with 83 and 76 while Staley shot a 79 and 84. "It was a real team effort with everyone pitching in for a respectable showing. Thirty-six holes is always a long day, but we played well," said head coach Bob Freudenthal. The Cyclones home opener on Aug. 31 proved even more successful by finishing first in the field. Tim Komenda (Stagg) shot 80, followed by Lovelace with 81, John Beissman (Lockport) had an 82, and Staley shot 86. "This was a great team effort on a windy and tough course. The next closest team was 12 shots behind us," Freudenthal said. "We got off to a good start this year and I'm feeling pretty good. We have eager players who want to contribute. Hopefully we'll continue our winning ways."

2007 Season Preview With a handful of second- and third-place finishes, Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play, the men's golf team is poised to challenge for the conference championship next season and improve on their 8th place finish in the Region IV Tournament. "Although we would have liked to finish with higher rankings in the conference and in Region IV, it was a satisfying season, and the team members gave it their all," said head coach Bob Freudenthal said. "I look forward to the return of several of our freshmen players next year." Those players include Marc Carter (Reavis), Chris Carvey (Stagg), Matt Crota (Eisenhower), Dave Keate (Sandburg), Forrest McDonald (Reavis), Coltin Thomas (Shepard), and Dave Weber (Sandburg). "These guys are now familiar with what it takes to play golf at the collegiate level, and I think next season they'll really have an opportunity to demonstrate their progress," Freudenthal said. Earning post-season recognition for the Cyclones this season was second-year player Chris Blankenship (Mt. Carmel), who was selected as All-Conference.
