Cyclones finish ninth in first tourney
The Cyclones hit the golf course
to test their stuff Aug. 27 at Highland Community College,
finishing the day in ninth place. Matt Lovelace (Lyons Township)
led the team hitting 79 and 77, followed by Bobby Isacson
(Andrew) with 78 and 80, Bob Love (Bogan) shooting 78 and 82,
and Brendan Ryan (Shepard) chipping in with 78 and 86. “Moraine
Valley came in ninth place out of 15 teams, which is a
respectable showing in the season’s first tournament,” said
coach Bob Freudenthal.

Cyclones looking for three-peat in 2010
The Cyclone golf team is looking
for a three-peat as Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference
champions this season, and with the lineup they have their
chances look good.
Coming from a successful season where the team repeated their
conference championship and sent Matt Lovelace (Lyons
Township) to the national tournament, the 2010 Cyclones have a
few strong returners and promising newcomers.
Lovelace is back again as the top golfer. Last season he played
well enough to earn NJCAA All-Region IV and All-Conference
honors. “He is a team leader with a maturity that shows on and
off the course,” said coach Bob Freudenthal. Ryan Collins
(Oak Forest) also returns after playing all summer in
tournaments and working hard on his game. He is the longest
hitter on the team, and Freudenthal expects big things from him
this season. Randy Wrobel (Oak Lawn) and Jeff Siefert
(Marist) have solid swings, while Jason Fonte (Stagg) and
Bobby Isacson (Andrew) both have the potential and
ability to have a good year on the course.
The four new additions to the team bring some potential as well.
Bob Love (Bogan) is an older member of the team, but is
one of the longer hitters and expected to contribute. Brendan
Ryan (Shepard) has a good swing with lots of promise.
Blake Putman (Lincoln-Way East) has the perfect name for his
strength in putting and the short game, and Zac Yaeger
(Lockport), a transfer from Benedictine University, rounds out
the team with his experience.
As long as some of these golfers click with their game, another
championship is not far behind, and they can give their
nemesis—Black Hawk College—a run for their money, Freudenthal
said.
“I’m very optimistic for a three-peat. With the experienced
returners and addition of new young talent, it’ll be very
competitive among the guys, which will make us better,”
Freudenthal said. “Nobody’s spot is guaranteed and every player
can be in the top five. We have a deeper team than usual and a
lot of potential this year. I think we’ll be competitive. That’s
all I ask. We have the makings of a good season. I have a good
feeling about this team. There’s good team chemistry. These guys
are playing for the good of the team, so that’s important.” |
