The 2012-13 season marks Dedrick Shannon's ninth
as head coach of the Cyclones. Shannon, a point guard on the 1995-96 team,
returned to Moraine Valley in 2004 with six years of coaching experience. He led his
talented 2011-12 squad to the NJCAA Division II Championship, a first in his
tenure, after winning the NJCAA Region IV Championship and being crowned
co-champs in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference. He also was selected as
the 2012 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Co-Coach of the Year in NJCAA
Division II. In the 2008-09 season, Shannon led his squad to a 28-5 season, ranking as high as 12th in NJCAA
Division II, and a Skyway championship. After these successful seasons, Shannon
earned 2011-12 and 2008-09 Skyway Conference Coach of the Year and Skyway Male
Coach of the Year. He also was the 2012 Region IV Coach of the Year.
Before coaching at Moraine
Valley, Shannon helped manage an independent basketball club/travel team. In
addition, he served as a volunteer basketball coach and basketball coordinator
at the Blue Island Recreation Center, overseeing teams from K-12th grade, and
helping the program's overall growth and participation. He is currently the
director of basketball operations at the Illinois Basketball Academy in
Naperville.
Shannon was a three-sport athlete at Eisenhower
High School, including being a team captain for football, basketball and
baseball and an all-conference selection for basketball during his senior year.
Coach Shannon also captained the Cyclones'
1995-96 team.
"I believe in balancing hard work, physical
preparation, and a commitment to academics," Shannon said. Armed with that
philosophy, he has helped players attain their goals on the court and in the
classroom.
