Pitching and newcomers highlight season

Throughout a string of nasty spring weather, strong pitching and talented newcomers prevailed in the 2011 Cyclones baseball season. It wasn’t the kind of season head coach Tom Radz envisioned in the fall but was sprinkled with highlights.

In what he terms a “frustrating season,” Radz gave high praise to his pitching staff that threw well all season-long. "I credit all of our pitchers for buying into our philosophy of pitching to contact, and that made a big difference this year. Our pitching kept us in games, and often we had a guy out there that didn't get the win he deserved. Improving defensively behind our pitchers is the main recruiting concern for next year."

Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) was one of those pitchers. The sophomore proved he was capable of playing at the highest college level, getting marquee wins against Elgin Community College and Kankakee Community College this year. He was named to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference second team for his efforts. "Austin was our big-game pitcher all year long, and I'm glad he got some recognition for that in a conference that is stacked with good pitchers," Radz said. "Any time he was on the mound, we were confident that he would give us a chance to win.”

A lot of the newcomers to the Cyclone team also stepped up when needed and performed when some starters were injured. Freshman Joe Rigg (Sandburg) had a tremendous year at shortstop. He was projected as a back-up infielder in the fall, but absorbed the coaching and bought into the system for a stellar season. He earned a nod to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first team. "I'm extremely happy for Joe. Here's a kid who was cut from his high school team, who came in and listened to the coaching staff and took his game to the next level. It's always nice to see people who deserve awards get those awards. It so often happens the other way around. Joe, undoubtedly, deserved this award," Radz said.

Adam Villar (Argo) was another freshman who came in as a back-up infielder, but had to convert to a catcher. By the end of the year, Villar was just as good a catcher defensively as any opponent faced, Radz said. Jeff Baude (Tinley Park), who started the year as a relief pitcher, eventually secured a spot in the rotation after putting together several impressive performances against some quality teams.

Some of the expected performances were by sophomores Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) and Dan Townsend (Andrew). "Williamson took the offense on his shoulders and put together another great year at the plate. And while Townsend's stats don't indicate the kind of year he had, he went out there and threw some great games where we didn't play behind him or give him any type of run support. I expected great things out of those guys, and they did not disappoint me,” Radz said.

The Cyclones are looking past their 14-27 overall record and toward the next season where they need to improve defensively and build a stronger core group. "Not being able to practice outside all year long could have been a factor that played into our poor defensive play, but there were a number of areas that we were deficient and not affected by the weather. We have to address those this spring and summer, recruiting-wise. We are also going to look for the right 'type' of player. We made a lot of excuses this year instead of taking accountability for our actions and trying to change them. It ultimately starts with me in that area. I need to do a better job of bringing in mature players who are ready to work hard and make adjustments to their game. We didn't make a lot of adjustments this year," Radz said.

Cyclones stumble in playoffs

With a surge after a win May 10 at the start of NJCAA Region IV Division II sectionals, the Cyclones felt ready to continue their playoff run with a renewed sense of power. Unfortunately their opponents had other ideas.

Moraine Valley hit a road block in the finals May 13 with losses against McHenry County College and Black Hawk College to end the season. An early morning start in the first game with McHenry didn't help as the Cyclones lost 12-2. The players lacked energy and didn’t quite perform up to their abilities, said coach Tom Radz.

The Cyclones picked up steam in their game with Black Hawk, but still lost the contest 12-4. "Danny Townsend (Andrew) kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win, but we didn't respond offensively in the late innings, and Black Hawk did,” Radz said. “We played a much cleaner game, and while it wasn't the ideal way to end the season there were some positives."

Big Cyclone offense helps in sweep

There was nothing but offense May 3 as the Cyclones hosted Olive Harvey College for a sweep in two double-digit wins.

Jeff Baude (Tinley Park), John Smith (Evergreen Park) and Joe Rigg (Sandburg) combined their pitching efforts with Smith getting the 16-13 win. Rigg went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the game. John McDoniel (Evergreen Park) owned the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and scoring twice. David Loomis (Shepard) scored a run and had two RBIs.

The Cyclones continued their offensive push in the second game, this time a 12-3 win. Rigg pitched this game, striking out five, and helped his cause at the plate scoring twice and hitting two RBIs. Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) had an RBI, scored two and stole a base. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a stolen base.

May 3, 2011
Cyclones split two with Pioneers

The Cyclones split two with Prairie State College at home on May 2. In game one the team lost 2-1, but came back in the nightcap with a 2-1 win.

Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) pitched the first game, striking out seven. Joe Rigg (Sandburg) went 2-for-4, scoring the lone run. Wallace hit the RBI.

Dan Townsend (Andrew) was the ace in the second game for the win. David Loomis (Shepard) had two RBIs and a walk while Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy) went 1-for-3. Paul Simon (Thornwood) walked twice and scored a run.

May 2, 2011
Cyclones struggle with Rock Valley

It was a rough outing for the Cyclones May 1 as they played against a tough Rock Valley College team, falling in both games 12-8 and 17-2.

Brian Markham (De La Salle) pitched the first game and Kevin Oliver (Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences) threw for the nightcap. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) had two RBIs and a run scored for the night while Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) went 4-for-7 with three RBIs and four runs scored between both games. Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy) hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in game one, and Jeff Baude (Tinley Park) had a double in the second game.

April 30, 2011
Cyclones drop two

The weather finally cooperated April 29, but the Cyclones dropped two games to McHenry County College.

Jeff Baude (Tinley Park) and John Schergen (Marist) split pitching duties in the 11-8 loss in the first game. Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) and Tim Blaha (Stagg) each had two RBIs. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.

Joe Rigg (Sandburg) threw for the second game, this time a 5-1 loss, striking out five. Wallace was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a triple. David Loomis (Shepard) was 2-for-2 while Tim Blaha (Stagg) had an RBI for the game.

Tough spring for Cyclones

The rainy spring weather of late has forced the Cyclones to practice more indoors, play more often on alternative diamonds and ultimately lose the feel for their home turf. That disadvantage has hurt Moraine Valley and was evident in their April 25 loss to Waubonsee Community College.

"These are not excuses, but not having played at full strength and only having played four games on your home field the entire year has been a huge obstacle for us to get over. We need to bear down and figure out a way to do it," said coach Tom Radz. "I don't know another sport where home field advantage comes into play more, and our field has not been playable. We've only had three practices outside the entire spring."

This game was supposed to take place at Moraine Valley, but an unplayable field moved the game to Waubonsee. The first game was a difficult 14-2 loss. Dan Townsend (Andrew) threw four innings before John Smith (Evergreen Park) and John Schergen (Marist) each took the mound. Joe Rigg (Sandburg) continued his run going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) also had two RBIs while Tim Blaha (Stagg) was 2-for-3.

Game two was suspended after six innings with the Cyclones down 6-3. Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) pitched the game, striking out six. Rigg was 3-for-3 this time with a run scored and an RBI. Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy) added his own RBI and run and Blaha had an RBI as well.

"A bad spring weather-wise has turned into a bad spring all around for us," Radz said. "Between all of our injuries and guys not panning out like we planned, the lineup we have on the field is not the lineup we envisioned from this past fall. The guys we have out there are doing the best they can and adapting to working with different players around them. That's all I can ask at this point."

April 22, 2011
Cyclones top Chaparrals

After a mini-break due to inclement weather, the Cyclones got back to work April 21 with a 9-4 win over College of DuPage.

Jeff Baude (Tinley Park) threw for the Cyclones, giving up just two hits and striking out nine. Brian Markham (De La Salle) pitched relief for the win.

"Baude threw another gem for us, going 7 2/3 innings and not giving up an earned run," said coach Tom Radz. "Here is another instance of one of our pitchers throwing a really great game and not getting the win. Jeff deserved a win today."

Joe Rigg (Sandburg) continues to produce at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy) stepped up in the game going 4-for-5. The ball wasn’t carrying well, but Pruim displayed his power by knocking a ball off the scoreboard for a homerun.

"This was a good win for us, but we did have one of our ninth inning lapses where we were up three runs and made a couple of mistakes to let the opponent back in the game and send it into extra innings," Radz said. "However, the guys showed some mental toughness in the 10th inning and came back to put up five runs to seal the win."

April 14, 2011
Cyclone offense sparks

The Cyclone offense finally caught fire April 13 with a huge 17-7 win over Illinois Central College at home.

"It's nice to get back into the win column," said coach Tom Radz. "There are still many things we need to work on as a team and individually, but hopefully this win will give us some momentum going into a very tough conference series with McHenry on Saturday."

Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East), Pat Wilkison (Brother Rice) and John Smith (Evergreen Park) combined their pitching efforts for the victory with Wilkison earning the win. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, three walks and four runs scored. Adam Villar (Argo) was 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs and a run scored. Joe Rigg (Sandburg) also had a good night scoring three runs and going 3-for-6.

"Pitching has usually been our strong suit thus far, but the offense really stepped up late in the game to put ICC away," Radz said. "Williamson often puts the team on his back in that department, but today he got some help from freshmen Adam Villar and Joe Rigg. Between the three of them, we got nine hits and eight RBIs. They were, without a doubt, the deciding factor in this game."

April 13, 2011
Two close games for ’Clones

It was another case of strong pitching and lackluster offense for the Cyclones on April 12 as they dropped two to College of Lake County.

Jeff Baude (Tinley Park) pitched the first game, a 3-2 loss. Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy) had an RBI while David Loomis (Shepard) and Adam Villar (Argo) each went 1-for-2 with a walk.

The second game was just as close, a 2-1 loss with Dan Townsend (Andrew) on the mound. Pruim and Loomis each had an RBI and Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) was 1-for-3.

"The story of the season continues where we get good pitching and we don't take care of the other aspects of the game to win. Baude and Townsend went out there and pitched great games, but we didn’t show up with the bats this time," said coach Tom Radz. "As a coach, I need to take credit as well for losing these one run ballgames. At this point, I'm well aware of what my team is capable of doing and not doing, and I need to adjust accordingly. Everyone, including myself and my coaching staff, needs to step up their game for the remainder of the season."

April 10, 2011
Cyclones looking to improve

The Cyclones were shut down at the plate April 9 against Oakton Community College, but the scores were not indicative of how much Moraine Valley is improving their mental and physical game.

In the first game the Cyclones lost 10-5 with Pat Wilkison (Brother Rice) on the mound. Ryan March (Brother Rice) and David Loomis (Shepard) each scored two runs while Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy) earned an RBI and went 2-for-3 with a double.

For the second game the Cyclones put up a tougher fight in their 3-2 loss. Pruim walked twice, March doubled and Joe Rigg (Sandburg) scored a run. Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) pitched well, striking out six.

"Wallace continues to show that he is one of the top pitchers in the region. He pitched well enough to win, but we never really got our bats going to give him any support,” said coach Tom Radz. “We've been hitting the ball well, as of late, but we had a slow day at the plate, and we just couldn't get anything going offensively."

"Although our record does not indicate it over this past week, I truly feel that things are slowly falling in place," Radz said. "If we continue to improve, we’re going to start winning some of these one- and two-run ballgames."

April 8, 2011
Cyclones hold on to win over Cardinals

The ninth inning blues nearly got the better of the Cyclones April 7, but they prevailed with an 8-7 win over North Central College JV.

Freshman Joe Rigg (Sandburg) earned the win, throwing four strong innings. Freshmen John Schergen (Marist), John Smith (Evergreen Park) and Brian Markham (De La Salle) each contributed to the pitching effort to hang on for the victory.

"It's nice to get back into the win column, but we are still plagued by that last inning," said coach Tom Radz. "Again, our pitching did a fantastic job throughout the game, but we are just not making the plays behind them when the game is on the line. This last inning letdown is becoming a habit with our ball club and we need to find a way past it."

April 7, 2011
Cyclones fall in the ninth

Going into the ninth inning the Cyclones were down one run, but errors once again were the culprit in the 7-2 loss to Triton College on April 6.

"It's very disappointing when you go into the top of the ninth inning down one run and come out of it down five as we did,” said coach Tom Radz. "My hat goes off to Jeff Baude (Tinley Park), who pitched a great game and deserved a win against a very good Triton team. The bottom line is we had a freshman take the mound and do a terrific job, and we handed over his win to the other team."

Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) was 2-for-3 on the night while both Tim Blaha (Stagg) and David Loomis (Shepard) were 1-for-3.

April 6, 2011
Errors hurt Cyclones

Cyclone pitchers continue to do well, but the defense isn’t up to snuff yet, evident in their narrow losses to Morton College. Moraine Valley dropped two games, 6-5 and 6-4, on April 5.

Dan Townsend (Andrew) pitched another solid game, striking out six and making batters hit groundballs, but too many fielding errors gave him the loss. A few batters continue to hit well including Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) who went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Joe Rigg (Sandburg) who had a triple and Paul Simon (Thornwood) who walked and scored one.

Southpaw Pat Wilkison (Brother Rice) threw in the second game, but a few unearned runs cost the Cyclones the win. Simon scored again this game, while Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy) scored a run and Tim Blaha (Stagg) doubled and earned two RBI.

“We are playing a little cleaner baseball, but there are still improvements that need to be made. There were more unearned runs in these games. Morton had seven infield hits in the first game, and we struck out seven times between both games with runners in scoring position. So, we had the opportunities to win, but just could not capitalize on it,” said coach Tom Radz. “Morton is a good team that is well coached. If we can continue to improve on some of the things that ail us right now, we can definitely beat these types of teams as we proved with Kankakee and Elgin.”

April 4, 2011
’Clones take one from Spartans

In the past week, Moraine Valley has taken two out of three games from two of the top teams in NJCAA Region IV—Kankakee and Elgin community colleges. Their latest big win was a split decision April 2 against Elgin.

The first game was a slight setback with some mental errors, costing the Cyclones in a 13-3 loss. Dan Townsend (Andrew) pitched some good innings, but didn’t have enough defense to back him up.

"Townsend came out and pitched great, but it was clear that we weren't going to play defense behind him, so I went to our bullpen early to save Danny for our conference series on Tuesday," said coach Tom Radz. "It's unfortunate because Danny has had two or three outings where he has gone out there and thrown ground ball pitches and we are not picking them up behind him, which was the case on Sunday."

Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) was back in the lineup, hitting a homerun and getting an RBI. Ryan March (Brother Rice) was 1-for-2.

After a tough first game, the Cyclones bounced back to win the nightcap 7-6.

"It's encouraging to see our guys rebound from the loss and come back and beat a very good Elgin team," Radz said. "The guys showed a lot of heart and did not let the loss dictate how we played in game two."

Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) had another good outing, striking out seven and walking just three for the win. Joe Rigg (Sandburg) and Paul Simon (Thornwood) were top hitters for the game, each going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

"Over this past week we've taken two out of three from the top two teams in the region, which shows that when we play our brand of baseball we can beat anybody," Radz said. "And the best part about those two wins is we’re getting production out of our younger guys like Rigg and Simon, who have been hitting the ball well for us."

March 30, 2011
Cyclones rout number two-ranked Kankakee

In their biggest win of the year, Moraine Valley defeated number two-ranked Kankakee Community College 5-3 on March 29.

"I'm really proud of our guys," said coach Tom Radz. "We've been struggling as of late, but to keep the faith and come out against a good team and beat them in a very good game says a lot about our guys, especially to pull off such a big win without our three and four hitters who are banged up right now."

Pitcher Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) earned the win, striking out three in the process. Pat Wilkison (Brother Rice) closed out the final two innings.

"Wallace pitched a tremendous game, and it's nice to see our defense step up and play behind him," Radz said. "The most encouraging thing, for me, was to see our infielders throwing their bodies in front of the ball and really working to ensure Austin got a well-deserved win."

With missing key offense from Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) and Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy) due to injury, several Cyclones stepped up to pick up the slack. Joe Rigg (Sandburg) went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Tim Blaha (Stagg) scored two and had an RBI, and Ryan March (Brother Rice) added an RBI of his own.

March 29, 2011
Cyclones fall in home opener

In their home opener March 28, the Cyclones fell 12-7 to rival Joliet Junior College. Ryan March (Brother Rice) went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored while Paul Simon (Thornwood) was 2-for-5 and Adam Villar (Argo) scored two runs. Dan Townsend (Andrew) was the starting pitcher in the matchup.

March 28, 2011
Slow moving start for Cyclones

It’s been a slow start to the Cyclone season. With nine games under their belts so far, including a weeklong spring training trip, Moraine Valley is still working out the kinks.

The Cyclones traveled to Clarksdale, Miss. and New Orleans, March 13-18, going 2-5 over the stretch against Coahoma Community College and Delgado Community College, the latter team being ranked 44th in the country. Sophomores Pat Wilkison (Brother Rice) and Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East) each put forth three solid outings. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) and Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy)—the three and four hitters in the lineup—suffered minor injuries, causing Williamson to miss two Delgado games. Pruim is still recovering. Pitching was a strong point for Moraine Valley.

"Our pitching has been the one beacon of hope in the season thus far. We went from walking six to seven guys a game in the fall to only two or three. Our pitchers are competing, but unfortunately the plays are not being made behind them," said coach Tom Radz. "Being able to go on a spring trip and play for an entire week definitely raises morale after being cooped up in a gym for several months. It also gives you a distinct advantage over some of the schools that aren't as fortunate as us and lost games, and even practices, to the grueling Chicago weather over their break. While we didn't get the results we wanted in the win-loss column, just being able to play has set us up well for the remainder of the season."

The Cyclones’ first post-spring training game was on March 23 against rival Joliet Junior College. Wallace pitched six solid innings before an ineffective bullpen and mental errors opened up the gate offensively for Joliet. The Cyclones lost that contest 13-3. Williamson continued to lead the way offensively for the Cyclones, notching two more hits to keep his batting average above .700.

"This group is rich in physical talent and once we can start playing the game mentally, like I know we can, I think we’ll be all right," Radz said. "Being a coach at a northern school, you expect slow starts, but there comes a time when things have to start falling in place, and that time is now. We can't go any further playing the way we have been."

March 15, 2011
Cyclone baseball has solid base to kick off season

The 2010 baseball season was a time of fresh starts for the Cyclones who had a new coaching staff, new set of team philosophies and new players. With a full season under his belt as head coach, Tom Radz has a deeper team in 2011 that has been working since the fall to improve on last year’s performance.

"I feel we’re an improved team from last year. The schedule is set up better, and we have more pitching depth, which hopefully will translate into a successful season," Radz said. "I’m pleased with the kids I’ve brought in. This is a more talented team. From top to bottom this is one of the more mature ball clubs I’ve coached. They proved it on the field and in the classroom. They gel on and off the field."

Returning this spring is offensive sparkplug and 2010 All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first team outfielder Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) who had a monster year last season, hitting .425. As the most all-around talented athlete on the team, and a slightly older player, he’s more mature and a solid daily example for the rest of the guys, Radz said. John McDoniel (Evergreen Park) also returns to the starting lineup at first base and when needed behind the plate. Batting from the left side, McDoniel will be counted on for sacrifice bunts and will be the go-to guy for putting the ball in play with runners in scoring position, Radz said.

The Cyclones have a good problem with two sophomores battling it out for the number one pitching slot. Righty Dan Townsend (Andrew) is the team captain, and southpaw Austin Wallace (Lincoln-Way East/St. Joseph) has the velocity and three pitches for strikes that will turn heads.

Newcomer Ryan March (Brother Rice), who batted for the cycle in fall ball, is expected to be the leadoff hitter and can fly on the base path. Primarily an outfielder, he’ll throw a little off the mound when needed. Tom Pruim (Morgan Park Academy/Carthage) also joins the team this season as the third baseman. A power hitter, he’s a hard worker, understands the game and should do some damage this year. Freshmen Tim Blaha (Stagg) and Paul Simon (Thornwood) are two infielders who came in, accepted all the coaching, have made great adjustments, and will be a comfort to have on the field, Radz said.

"From a year ago the depth of this team is like night and day. This year looks good," Radz said.

Radz is once again joined by coaches Dave Murray and Kory Fortman, both of whom bring extensive baseball knowledge to the Cyclones.

Cyclones hit road block in playoffs

Running on a six-game win streak the Cyclones headed into the Region IV Division II sectionals looking strong. However, they lost steam at the plate and were knocked out after two games to end the season.

The Cyclones were matched up against Black Hawk College in their first game of the sectionals on May 14. Sophomores John Pikes (St. Laurence) and Chris Kemp (Richards) each had a pair of hits, but the Cyclones were only able to plate one run in the 7-1 loss. Freshman starter Dan Townsend (Andrew) pitched eight innings, giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out five. Moraine Valley then had to face Madison Area Technical College. Freshman starter Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North/Western) pitched seven strong innings, giving up four earned runs. Kevin De La Rosa (Jones) hit the lone RBI for the Cyclones. Pikes, Kemp and Austin Ayala (Romeoville) got the only three hits of the game for the Cyclones, which ended in a 4-1 loss.

“I wish we had better results in the playoffs, particularly our stunted offense, but we played both games well defensively and with solid pitching,” said coach Tom Radz.

In the last 14 games, including playoffs, the Cyclones won 10 and tied one due to darkness. There were some tough losses throughout the year, but Moraine Valley hit their stride toward season’s end, finishing the regular season at .500 with a 23-23-1 record and conference record of 3-11.

"While it's always disappointing to be eliminated at the end of the season, the way this team came together at the end made me really proud," Radz said. "There were some weeks where the guys could have easily packed it in and gave up, but they didn’t. They remained determined, hung in there, stayed focused and helped salvage the season. If you would have told me last July when I took over the program that I had seven players returning and that we would finish the regular season at the .500 mark, I would've said you were crazy. But the guys who were here at the end bought into what we were teaching and never gave up. I'm extremely pleased with the results we got."

For their hard work, three Cyclones received awards during the season. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) was named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate All-Conference first team while Kemp and Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) were given nods to the second team. With some players moving on to four-year colleges and universities, Radz said he has a good core group expected to return next year. The top three Cyclone pitchers this season were freshmen, and Radz hopes to add more depth to that rotation. In addition to the pitching, a couple returning starting infielders and outfielder Williamson should be a solid base to build on.

Cyclones head to playoffs after six-game win streak

A six-game winning streak capped the Cyclone baseball season, which ended regular season play at .500. The team now heads into the playoffs this week.

The Cyclones wrapped up with a 23-23-1 season record and 3-11 conference record. They ended with a sweep of Robert Morris University on May 8. The Cyclones pulled out a nail-biter in game one, winning 10-9. Ben Szafoni (Richards) led the way offensively, going 2-3 with a triple, a double, a run scored, and four RBIs. Kevin De La Rosa (Jones) went 2-2 with three runs while St. Laurence grad John Pikes went 2-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

In game two Szafoni again led the way offensively going 2-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. De La Rosa was 2-3 with two runs scored. Freshman Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence) pitched six strong innings, allowing only one earned run on three hits, while striking out six in the 9-5 Cyclone victory.

"I cannot express how pleased I am to say that we were able to finish the regular season at the 500 mark," said coach Tom Radz. "All of the credit goes to the players who never stopped believing that we could compete with anyone if we showed up mentally prepared and played hard.

"The entire year I kept telling the guys over and over that you have to finish strong because that makes all the difference between winning and losing," Radz said. "Well, winning the last eleven of thirteen games is finishing strong. I'm proud of our guys, and I hope we can keep this momentum going into the playoffs this week."

’Clones sweep Skyhawks

The Cyclones started the weekend May 7 knocking off a suspended game from April 30 with Sauk Valley Community College. The game was suspended due to weather when the Cyclones were up 12-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Moraine Valley picked up right where they left off by scoring five runs to invoke the 10-run rule. Freshman Austin Ayala (Romeoville) came up with two RBIs, while Dan Townsend (Andrew) retired Sauk Valley in the bottom half, securing the 17-3 victory.

Townsend continued pitching in the second game against the Skyhawks going seven strong innings, giving up only one earned run and sealing the 7-3 victory for the 'Clones. Kevin De La Rosa (Jones) led the way offensively going 2-2 with two RBIs.

The Cyclones swept Sauk Valley 5-0 in the third game. Starter Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North) took the Cyclones on his back, blanking the Skyhawks in five innings only allowing four hits and striking out two. Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence) led the way offensively, going 2-2 with two RBIs. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth due to darkness.

Cyclones cap off solid week of ball

After a long week traveling and playing six games in three days, the Cyclones split a doubleheader May 1 with Rock Valley College.

Showing some fatigue from the week, the Cyclones dropped the first game 14-7. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) led the way offensively, going 2-4 with an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. Jordan Jones (Seton) and Ben Szafoni (Richards) also had a couple hits apiece.

In game two the Cyclones trailed by one run going into the bottom of the seventh when Williamson punched a walk-off home run to give Moraine Valley the 12-11 win. The home run was his second of the game and sixth in the last six games. In a week of ball that included eight games, Williamson had the best week of his baseball career when he went 17-29 with seven homeruns, 21 RBIs, and 18 runs scored.

"Not only in the ten years that I've been coaching, but in the twenty-seven years that I have been either playing or coaching baseball, I have never seen such an offensively dominant performance by one person like I saw with Williamson this week," said coach Tom Radz. "This is something that he, his teammates and I will remember for the rest of our lives. I'm ecstatic for Jeromy. He works harder than anyone on the team and deserves to have success like this."

This game capped a long week that resulted in a 5-1-1 record and one suspended game, one of the strongest weeks the Cyclones have had in awhile. "The results we got at the end of this week are all you can ask for when taking into consideration that we played six games in three days, traveled three hours to Galesburg on Thursday, two hours to Dixon on Friday, and then had to come home and put our tarp on so we could play Saturday's game," Radz said. "I'm really proud of my team and how mentally tough they stayed throughout this grueling part of our schedule. We bounced back with one of the best wins of the season in game two against Rock Valley."

To top off the week, several players earned honors. Williamson was named to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first team while Chris Kemp (Richards/Robert Morris) and Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) got the nod for the All-Conference second team.

Weather suspends a Cyclone sweep

The bats were hot and the pitching stumped Sauk Valley Community College in the Cyclones near doubleheader sweep of the Skyhawks April 30. The second game was suspended due to weather.

Freshman John McDoniel (Evergreen Park) led the way offensively in the Cyclones 7-1 win, going 2-3 with two RBIs. Pitcher Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North/Western) held Sauk Valley to just one run in seven innings, allowing six hits, three walks and striking out 12.

The second game was halted due to weather in the fifth inning with the Cyclones up 12-3. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) continued his hitting prowess going 3-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Making his second start on the mound, John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) pitched four innings, giving up three earned runs on one hit and three walks, and striking out three. The game will be resumed May 8.

’Clones score 34 runs in two games

Mad hitting continued for the Cyclones as they scored 34 runs during their doubleheader April 29 with Carl Sandburg College.

On a day where the wind was blowing out at nearly 50 mph, both teams scored a combined 65 runs in 12 innings of baseball. In game one Moraine Valley eked out the 20-17 win. The second game was called after five innings because of darkness, resulting in a 14-14 tie. For the Cyclones, freshman Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) led the way offensively, going 5-9 with three home runs, a triple and a double with eight RBIs on the day.

Cyclones dominate DuPage

The Cyclones found their hitting game for the second consecutive game by outscoring College of DuPage 15-4 on April 27.

The big inning came in the fourth when the Cyclones scored eleven runs. Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) and Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) each scored twice that inning. Koronkowski went 2-4 with three RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored, while Williamson was 2-2 with two walks, was hit by a pitch, and had a stolen base with three runs scored and two RBIs. Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence/College of DuPage) added three hits of his own. Pitchers Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North/Western), Tom Kruse (Oak Lawn) and John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) held DuPage to just four runs in five innings.

"Things are really starting to come together offensively for us," said coach Tom Radz. "I think the guys are finally making adjustments from each at bat, which is something we weren't doing earlier in the year.

"The offense did a really good job of jumping out on our opponents quickly, which allowed us to save some pitching for the end of this week when we have six games in three consecutive days," Radz said. "On paper, this week always looked a little scary with the amount of games we play, but our offense did a really good job of allowing us to preserve pitching for those games. We are in a good position to win the rest of our games this week, and that is all you can ask."

Offense kicks in for a win

It only took six innings for the Cyclones to win their April 26 game with Olive-Harvey College. Moraine Valley 10-run ruled their opponents, winning 15-2.

Freshman Austin Ayala (Romeoville) led the way offensively going 3-4 with four RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored. Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) went 4-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) and Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North/Western) each hit a home run.

April 23, 2010
Cyclones fall in 11 innings

The Cyclones battled one out April 22 against College of DuPage, sending it to 11 innings before losing 4-3.

Sophomore Ben Szafoni (Richards) hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to tie the game 3-3, but the Cyclones were unable to pull out the win after failing several times to add a run with runners in scoring position. Starter Tom Kruse (Oak Lawn) pitched five strong innings, only allowing three runs. Dan Townsend (Andrew) came in to relieve Kruse, pitching four quality innings and allowing one run, which happened to be the game winner.

"This is another game where we gave a win away," said coach Tom Radz. "We made several mistakes late in the game in crucial situations, and you can't expect to win those games.

"I sent a runner that was tagging up on a shallow fly ball and he was thrown out. However, I was playing to win the game, rather than playing not to lose, and that is what I ask my players to do as well,” Radz said. “However, my players weren't playing to win today. We struck out looking with runners in scoring position several times, we made mental mistakes, froze up defensively on a number of occasions, and didn't make routine plays. We didn't deserve to win this game."

April 21, 2010
Splitsville for Cyclones

The Cyclones pitching staff had a rough outing in their first game with Elgin Community College on April 20, but bounced back for a split with the Spartans.

For the first game John Harris (Marion Catholic) went 1-2 with a home run and two RBIs while Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Starter John Florence (Sandburg) went seven innings, giving up eight earned runs on 12 hits and five walks in the 10-5 loss.

The Cyclones battled Elgin into extra innings in game two, coming up victorious and winning 2-1 in the eighth. Freshman starter Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North/Western) earned a complete game victory, going eight innings, giving up no earned runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out two. Freshman Austin Ayala (Romeoville) hit an RBI single to right field for the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth. John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) went 2-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.

"I'm really proud of our team the way they responded in game two today," said coach Tom Radz. "We had an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the seventh and a base running error led to a missed opportunity. But the team stayed focused, and we came back to get the job done.

"Loconsole had another great outing against a really tough team which at this point is becoming routine for him," Radz said. "I have to tip my cap to Ayala who came up with the big hit today. For a freshman to step up in that situation and get the game-winning hit speaks volumes about his potential."

April 19, 2010
’Clones can’t get a break

Shaky defense, ejections and last inning catch up at the plate set up an interesting doubleheader for the Cyclones, but ended in two close losses with Waubonsee April 17.

Cyclone defense was lackluster in the first two innings, making the difference in an 8-6 loss. The Chiefs scored seven of eight runs in the first two innings off starter Dan Townsend (Andrew). In the top of the seventh the Cyclones fought back with five runs, but not enough for the win. Chris Kemp (Richards) went 3-4 with an RBI, while Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) went 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

"It was clear that we weren't going to play behind Townsend, who was throwing well, but we just weren't making routine plays," said coach Tom Radz. "We only had one error in the first two innings, but missed a pop-up and gave away a couple of infield singles that should have been outs. You can't spot a team seven runs in the first two innings and expect to win."

The Cyclones had to fight back in the second game with five runs in the seventh inning. Again the team fell short in the 10-9 loss. The game was tied 3-3 in the third inning when clean-up hitter Kemp was ejected from the game for supposedly making a line in the dirt. Radz’ frustration subsequently caused his ejection. Williamson led the way offensively by going 2-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Ben Szafoni (Richards) was 2-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) went 2-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

"Normally, I take the umpire's side on the ejection of one of my players, but in 10 years of coaching baseball I have never seen a player ejected for something as small as making a line in the dirt," Radz said. "When you eject my clean-up hitter for something that small without a warning in a tie game in the third inning, I’ll get mad. The umpire got it wrong, and who knows what the outcome would've been had Kemp and I not been ejected.

"In both games our players showed a lot of heart fighting back in the seventh inning the way they did, but we have to play cleaner baseball in the first six innings to not get ourselves in that type of hole," Radz said.

April 17, 2010
Cyclones take one from Trojans

A split at home was the best the Cyclones could do April 16 against Triton College.

On a windy day the Cyclones were limited to just two runs on five hits in an 8-3 loss to Triton. Sophomores Ben Szafoni (Richards) and Chris Kemp (Richards) each had a hit and RBI in the game. Starting pitcher John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) went four innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits and walking five.

The Cyclones responded in game two with a slaughter-rule win, crushing Triton 13-3 in five innings. Pikes led the way offensively, going 3-4 with a homerun, one RBI, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Freshman John McDoniel (Evergreen Park) also went 3-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored while Sean Boyle had three RBIs. Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) hit a homerun in the second inning, but the Triton coach protested the game because Koronkowski used an illegal bat. Starter Brian Loconsole went all five innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out two.

"This is another big win for our program, and shows that when we come to play, we can compete with any team in the area," said coach Tom Radz. "Not only did our offense step up with 16 hits, but Loconsole did a tremendous job on the mound, shutting down a very potent Triton offense. For a freshman, Loconsole has proved that he can beat tough teams like he did with South Suburban a few weeks back, and now with Triton."

April 14, 2010
Cyclone pains at the plate and on the mound

The Cyclones had a difficult outing April 13 against a Prairie State team they could have beaten, but their batting and pitching continue to struggle.

The lone hit for Moraine Valley came from Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) in the 8-1 loss. Prairie State was limited to only four hits, but scored eight runs after starter Tom Kruse (Oak Lawn) walked seven and hit a batter in four innings pitched. Cyclone defense played sub-par behind Kruse, making three errors, two by shortstop Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle).

"In all the years I have coached, I’ve never seen a team hand another team a win like we did in game one," said coach Tom Radz. "For them to get eight runs on four hits, one of which was a bunt, shows that Kruse didn't come to compete on the mound. Offensively, we didn't make any adjustments either. We kept trying to pull the ball and ended up hitting ten ground balls to the left side."

The Cyclones kept the score tighter in game two, but lost a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh when pitcher Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence/DuPage) walked one and hit a batter to give the Pioneers the 4-3 win. Austin Ayala (Romeoville) was strong at the plate with a two-RBI double in the second inning.

"Ramirez pitched well through the sixth inning in the second game, but you can't come out in the seventh with a one-run lead then walk a batter and hit another batter and expect to keep that lead," Radz said. "We lost two games to a team that I don't believe was better than us. As a coach I have to take a lot of that blame on myself. Whether it is mentally or physically, we are just not prepared."

Cyclones sweep Eagles

Moraine Valley had a couple more breakout games, amassing two more victories April 11 against Illinois Valley Community College.

Unloading the bats, the Cyclones earned the 17-5 victory on a 10-run slaughter ruling. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) led the way offensively going 4-5 with a triple and four RBIs. John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) went 3-4 with a stolen base, one RBI and three runs scored. Ben Szafoni (Richards), Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) and Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence) also had two hits apiece. Pikes made his first start on the mound throwing a complete game victory, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out five.

To round out the series, Moraine Valley knocked out a 9-4 win. Williamson again led the way offensively going 2-2 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Kevin De La Rosa (Jones) went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Starter John Florence (Sandburg) also made his first start for the Cyclones, throwing a complete game victory, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out four.

"While the offense is the obvious story against Illinois Valley, Pikes and Florence really were the key factors in these wins," said coach Tom Radz. "Both guys stepped up and made their first starts for this team, picking up a pitching staff that is tired and a little banged up. They not only ate some innings for us, but went out there and did a tremendous job. They gave our regular starters some much needed rest so they can be 100 percent for our next conference matchup."

April 11, 2010
Cyclones split two

The Cyclones broke out of their losing streak, but split two with McHenry County College April 10.

Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) went 2-3 with a homerun and three RBIs to lead the Cyclones offensively in the 10-9 win. Kevin De La Rosa (Jones) went 3-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base, while John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) went 3-5 with an RBI and a stolen base. Dan Townsend (Andrew) threw five innings, striking out seven and giving up seven runs on six hits. Sean Boyle (Oak Lawn) earned the win, pitching one inning and giving up just one run on two hits.

The Cyclones were held to just five hits in the second game, which resulted in a 15-4 loss. A two-run homerun by Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence) was the only offensive highlight of the game. Ramirez also started on the mound, not making it out of the first inning after giving up seven earned runs.

"After being shut out three games in a row, it was nice to come out against McHenry and get the bats going again," said coach Tom Radz. "Just when it seemed like we couldn't buy a run, the offense came out and put up 12 hits against a good McHenry squad. It finally seems like we’re making adjustments at the plate, and it really showed.”

April 9, 2010
Game canceled

The game scheduled for Friday, April 9, against Sauk Valley Community College, has been rescheduled for May 8.

April 9, 2010
Cyclone bats go cold

The bats just couldn’t come alive for the Cyclones as they failed to score April 8 in their doubleheader with Black Hawk College.

Moraine Valley scattered five hits in the first game and were unable to score in the 10-0 loss. John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton), Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle), Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence), Austin Ayala (Romeoville), and John McDoniel (Evergreen Park) each had a hit. Starter Tom Kruse (Oak Lawn) went three innings, giving up three runs, but only two were earned.

"It's difficult when you pull your starter because you think a three-run deficit is too big of a hole to get out of, but that is just how our offense is going right now," said coach Tom Radz. "Kruse was pitching well, but unfortunately we fell behind early. I made the decision to pull him so he could come back on Saturday in our conference games."

For the nightcap, the Cyclones were blanked for the third straight game, making it 21 innings since they last scored. This time the team fell 15-0. Ben Szafoni (Richards) and McDoniel got the only two hits.

"While it is clear that we do not have the pitching depth to be competitive, we still aren't making plays behind our pitchers, and our offense is still not making any adjustments at the plate," Radz said.

April 7, 2010
Rough outing for Cyclones

The week started off rough for the Cyclones as they dropped two games to College of Lake County April 6.

The Cyclones were limited to six hits, four of which came in the fifth and final inning in the 13-3 loss. Chris Kemp (Richards) and John Harris (Marion Catholic) each had a hit and an RBI. Sean Boyle (Oak Lawn) went 1-1 with a run scored while Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) went 1-3 with a run scored. Starter Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence/College of DuPage) went two innings, giving up seven earned runs on five hits, six walks and two hit batters.

By the second game Moraine Valley shut down and were shut out 11-0. Williamson and Kevin De La Rosa (Jones) accounted for the only two hits in the game. Starting pitcher Rob Mataragas (Argo) didn't record an out in the first inning before being pulled after giving up five earned runs on three walks and two homeruns.

"Anytime you walk twelve guys in a doubleheader it’s clear that your pitching staff didn't come to compete. On a normal day those walks are going to come back and haunt you, let alone a day when the wind is blowing out like it was," said coach Tom Radz. "I can take losing, but it's extremely frustrating when your pitching staff doesn't come to compete and your hitters don't make adjustments throughout the game."

April 5, 2010
'Clones drop two

The Cyclones struggled over the weekend, dropping two games to conference rival Oakton Community College April 3.

Danny Townsend (Andrew) pitched six innings, giving up five earned runs while striking out two, and picked up the 5-4 loss for Moraine Valley. Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) led the way offensively, going 2-3 with two RBIs. Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) and Kevin De La Rosa (Jones) each had a hit and an RBI.

"Despite the results, I felt we competed with a very good Oakton team that I expect will be somewhere near the top of this conference come May," said coach Tom Radz. "Although Townsend picked up the loss, I felt he threw another good game for us. We just came up short."

Energy deflated for the second game as the Cyclones were outscored 14-4. Starter Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North) lasted 1 1/3 innings walking two and giving up five hits and four earned runs. Chris Kemp (Richards/Robert Morris) went 2-2 with an RBI while Koronkowski and Williamson each added an RBI.

"Game two was a different story for us," Radz said. "Our pitchers did not come to compete. They were constantly working behind in the count, and a good-hitting team like Oakton made them pay. We didn't make any adjustments at the plate either and were limited to just five hits."

April 3, 2010
Cyclone pitchers get roughed up

The Cyclone pitching staff was roughed up in a brutal 27-5 loss to Kankakee Community College on April 2.

Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle), Ben Szafoni (Richards) and John McDoniel (Evergreen Park) each had two hits in the game. Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence) went 1-3 with two RBIs, while McDoniel and Szafoni each had one RBI.

"While it was clear that Kankakee was truly the better team today, it was also clear that we approached the game differently," said coach Tom Radz. "With a big conference series the next day, I used this as a day to get all of our pitchers some work and get some batting in for the guys who haven't been playing much. There are no excuses though for such a poor performance, and we need to get back on track."

Cyclones split with tough Panther team

After a big win over South Suburban on Monday, the Cyclones came back home to split two with a strong Morton College team on March 30.

In game one the Cyclones were held to just two runs on two hits, dropping the front end of the doubleheader 7-2. Starting pitcher Dan Townsend (Andrew) took the loss, going four innings and giving up four runs (two earned runs) while striking out four. The only Cyclone hits recorded in the game were by Chris Kemp (Robert Morris/Richards) and Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence).

"After beating a very good South Suburban team the day before, I think the guys had a little bit of an adrenaline dump and just didn't come to play in game one," said coach Tom Radz. "However, our team that came back from a three-run deficit to win on Monday, showed they were back in game two today and grinded out a good win."

The Cyclones took the second game 9-8. Ben Szafoni (Richards) led the way offensively going 3-3 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) went 3-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored, while Kemp, Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg) and John McDoniel (Evergreen Park) each went 2-3. Ramirez had a home run with two RBIs, and Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) added his own home run with one RBI. Pitcher Joe Dharamsy (Sandburg) pitched four strong innings in relief, holding Morton to one run and sealing the victory for the 'Clones.

"I believe this is the best team we've played thus far. It was nice to see our offense come alive in game two. Everyone in our lineup, with the exception of one guy, got a hit. And with our pitcher, Dharamsy, stepping up to pick up a tired pitching staff, it made this game a really nice team win," Radz said. “We've taken two out of three games from two very good teams this week, which gives us a lot of momentum going into this weekend's games."

Cyclones triumph in ninth over South Suburban

A ninth inning batting surge gave the Cyclones an important and long-awaited 7-6 win over South Suburban College March 29.

"This is a huge win for our program and hopefully sends the message that we can beat good teams," said head coach Tom Radz. "South Suburban has historically been one of the best programs in the area, and I can't remember the last time a Moraine team defeated them. When I took over the job last summer, South Suburban was one of the games that I knew we needed to win for us to become competitive on the recruiting trail. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for Moraine Valley baseball."

The Cyclones took a quick lead by scoring three runs over the first two innings on RBI singles by sophomore Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) and freshman Austin Ayala (Romeoville). Pitcher Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North/Western) held the Bulldogs to two runs through seven innings before giving up three runs in the eighth to relinquish the lead. The Cyclones immediately responded in the top half of the ninth by scoring four runs on RBI singles from Koronkowski and Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg), and an RBI double by Chris Kemp (Richards/Robert Morris).

"Our kids showed a lot of heart by not rolling over and dying after giving up the lead that late in the game," Radz said. "From the very start it was very clear we were not intimidated by what appeared on paper to be a better team. We stole bases, threw runners out and put up 17 hits on a quality team. I'm extremely happy with the direction and the momentum of this ballclub right now."

Offensively, Kemp went 5-5 with an RBI, Koronkowski went 3-6 with two RBIs, Williamson was 3-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases, and John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) went 2-4. The Cyclones stole five bases in the game. Loconsole finished the game pitching 7 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs and striking out four.

"While Loconsole technically did not get the win today, I felt he was one of the major factors that lead to our victory," Radz said. "He competed for nearly eight innings and, unfortunately, gave up three runs on a well placed bloop hit with two outs. The score is nowhere indicative of what he did on the mound. He pitched a tremendous game."

Cyclones on three-game win streak

The Cyclones are rolling on a three-game winning streak after overcoming Highland Community College in a doubleheader March 28.

In the first game the Cyclones won 4-2 behind sophomore Tom Kruse, who earned a complete game victory, throwing seven innings, striking out eight and only allowing one unearned run. Ben Szafoni went 1-2 with two RBIs and a stolen base, while John Pikes was 2-4 with a stolen base.

By the second game, the Cyclones gained strength in a 7-2 victory. Freshman starter Christian Ramirez went five innings, striking out four and allowing one earned run. Brian Koronkowski went 2-5 with four RBIs, while Dennis De La Rosa was 1-3 with two RBIs. Szafoni and John McDoniel each went 2-3 at the plate.

Solid pitching aids Cyclone win

The Cyclones had a solid outing March 26 as they defeated Joliet Junior College 4-1. Freshman Danny Townsend threw his third complete game victory of the season improving his record to 3-1. Townsend only gave up one earned run on six hits and one walk while striking out five. Christian Ramirez went 2-4 with an RBI, while Ben Szafoni and Austin Ayala each had a hit and an RBI.

Cyclones kicked down by Trojans

In their first game back from a 3-3 spring training trip, the Cyclones struggled against a tough Triton team in a double loss on March 24.

In the first game starter Brian Loconsole allowed three runs through three innings before giving up three more in the fourth, putting the game out of reach for the Cyclones. Offensively, while the Cyclones were able to produce nine hits, their inability to lay down a sacrifice bunt in several situations limited the run production. Sophomore John Pikes went 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base against his former team. The game ended in the sixth inning when the Trojans scored three runs to put the game at 15-3, invoking the 10-run slaughter rule.

In the following game a seven-run fourth inning by Triton off starter Tom Kruse proved to be the turning point, which saw the Cyclones drop another game to Triton, 10-2. While run production was an issue, sophomore Chris Kemp did hit his first home run of the season and picked up one of only two RBIs for the Cyclones. Kemp and freshmen John McDoniel and Kevin De La Rosa each had two hits in the game.

Cyclones fall in first game this season

The ground was still thawing, but the Cyclones stepped outside for the first time this season in a matchup with Joliet Junior College on March 9. The Cyclones were limited to three hits by Chris Kemp, John McDoniel and Kevin De La Rosa in the 7-0 loss. Starting pitcher Dan Townsend pitched a strong five innings, giving up one earned run. After the bullpen took over, things unraveled a bit, and simple missed plays by the defense changed the momentum of the game leading to the loss.

“There were some errors. Our bats were a little slow because it was our first time playing outdoors, and it was the first time these guys were seeing live pitching. I give hats off to Joliet’s pitcher for no runs on three hits,” said head coach Tom Radz. “But our starter, Townsend, threw unbelievably in this game.”

New skipper ready to take players to top of conference

As for any new head coach, the system is a little different and the faces are unfamiliar, but the possibilities are endless. Head coach Tom Radz is excited and ready to help Moraine Valley’s baseball team make a run in the conference this spring.

“There’s always the unknown with a new coach, but after seeing our returners and the guys I brought in, I think we’ll be very competitive and compete to take the conference, as long as we stay healthy. I inherited a good group,” Radz said. “I’m very excited, this being my first year here as head coach and implementing a new system. I’ve been working toward this, so I’m ready to get going.”

There are some returning ball players and talented recruits setting the season up for success. Returning All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference shortstop Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle) is back and expected to have a good year. Transfer John Pikes (St. Laurence/Triton) will have a big season on the mound and as the leadoff man. In only his first year pitching, Pikes will assume the closer role. Radz is also looking to newcomer Christian Ramirez (St. Laurence/College of DuPage) to contribute significantly at the plate as the team’s best hitter. A versatile player, Ramirez can step in as first baseman, catcher and a starting pitcher. The Cyclones have three additional starting pitchers to round out the rotation including Division I college transfer Brian Loconsole (Glenbard North/Western), freshman Dan Townsend (Andrew) and returning southpaw Tom Kruse (Oak Lawn). Transfer Jeromy Williamson (Brownsburg/St. Francis) also will make an impact as a starting outfielder.

During the fall and winter the team has been training indoors. Radz, who was previously a coach at Western University, has been adjusting to a new college and the players are learning his system.

“Everyone seems to be adapting well. I think we’re ready to take the field and show everyone what we can do,” Radz said. “First year coaches aren’t typically expected to do much, but I know we’re going to get results right away.”

The team heads south to Clarksdale, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana for spring training. While there the team will play six games divided between Coahoma Community College and top NJCAA baseball school and Louisiana State University feeder school, Delgado Community College. Expected to be some tough competition, Radz said this will be good experience for the Cyclones to gear up for the season

Baseball team ready to rebuild with new young head coach

With a new season comes new challenges, needs, goals, and coaches. The Cyclones have a new skipper in Tom Radz beginning in the fall.

Radz replaces former head coach Dan De Caprio who led the Cyclones in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. De Caprio tallied a 42-47 record in his brief tenure with the team.

“This is an exciting opportunity to return to the place where I grew up and to expand on a new career as a head coach. I’m very excited to start and have my own program,” Radz said.

A Palos Heights native, Radz graduated from Brother Rice High School and pitched for the University of Illinois-Chicago. He was UIC’s closer in 1997 and their number one pitcher in 1998 before transferring to Western Illinois University. As a Leatherneck, Radz signed as a catcher, but later became the number one pitcher at the Division I school.

Radz became the Leathernecks’ pitching coach from 2002 to 2003 before taking a hiatus to focus on his journalism career. In 2005 Radz returned to the team. He coached pitchers and catchers and served as the national recruiting coordinator through 2008. In 2007 Radz guided a pitching staff that brought home two Pitcher of the Week honors and one athlete who ranked third for the season in strikeouts in the conference. At one point during the 2007 season the pitching staff surrendered one walk in a span of 34 innings and featured a nearly 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In the summer of 2007 Leatherneck pitcher Rob Johnson signed a professional baseball contract, the first pitcher to do so under Radz. Radz also had a stellar pitching staff in 2008 when three pitchers earned various individual awards for their performances. The starting pitchers logged 10 complete games, more than doubling the total for the previous two seasons. The pitching staff also picked up two of the biggest in school history, defeating No. 7 Long Beach State and No. 4 Missouri.

In addition to working at Western, he served as a guest coach at the University of Kansas Jayhawks baseball camps and TPX Top 96 summer clinics.

Radz completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at Western University. In addition to coaching the Cyclones he also will start as an adjunct faculty member at Moraine Valley in fall 2009.

Radz brings with him a young coaching staff knowledgeable about the game and hungry for a championship season. Infield/hitting coach Dave Murray, a Sandburg graduate, played at both South Suburban College and Western Illinois University. A Lockport graduate, Nick Simmons, played four years under Radz at Western and will serve as a hitting coach. Dan Dannenberg, an Andrew grad, will be in charge of the bullpen and work with the outfield. Ryan Topf played at Moraine Valley several years ago and will serve as a first base coach. Zach Brandt will round out the coaching staff as bench coach.

“I think Tom is the perfect fit for Moraine Valley. He was exactly what I was looking for in a head coach. He is a local who’s know in the area and respected as a baseball player,” said Athletics Director Bill Finn. “I expect him to recruit better local players, and I know he’ll match managerial skills with anyone around. He’ll do a great job.”

Radz looks forward to his new career with the Cyclones and is confident he can build a strong program.

“For players still looking to continue their college career on the diamond, Moraine Valley offers an excellent opportunity to play,” Radz said. “I know the Cyclones have competed with other colleges for players, and I know my ties to Chicago and Division I baseball will bring quality players to the team, bring Moraine Valley baseball back to the top of the conference, as well as help my players continue their careers at a higher level.”

A two-to-three day team tryout will be held during the first few weeks of the fall semester. Radz wants to give the coaches a chance to evaluate the players’ talents and give the players a chance to demonstrate their skills over several days. Pitchers and catchers are strongly urged to tryout. All athletes need to complete a sports physical to be eligible to play college athletics. All tryout details will be posted as soon as they become available. For more information call Radz at (708) 974-5298 or e-mail radzt@morainevalley.edu.

The team will practice throughout the fall in preparation for the spring season. All athletes are required to take a sports physical to participate in college athletics. Lights out on baseball season

The baseball team fought all season-long and ended a tough year in the Region IV sectional playoffs held May 8-9. Injuries to some key starters and incessantly rainy weather were a couple obstacles this season.

The Cyclones started play the week of March 8 at spring training in Florida with a batch of games against tough competitors and held their own. Throughout the year several players had some big run-producing games and good outings on the mound. After battling for three games in the playoffs, the team ended with an overall 18-25 season record and 5-8 conference record.

"I was pleased with the effort of this year’s squad. They gave me all they had and competed hard all season," said head coach Dan De Caprio. "These young men will be successful the rest of their lives."

Team members earning post-season recognition included All-Region second team selection Matt Shilney, first team All-Conference recipients Shilney and Jason Stengle, followed by All-Conference second team honorees Matt Ginn, Dave Letourneau, Brian Koronkowski, and Matt Stauffer. Shilney, Stengle and Letourneau also were selected to participate in the Region IV All-Star game on May 26.

Cyclones come up short in big numbers game

March 25 vs. College of DuPage
Moraine Valley 17    College of DuPage 24
The scores resembled a football game, but pitchers from both teams were roughed up in a combined 41-run windy game. "No we have not reinstated football at Moraine Valley and yes that is the highest run production from any college baseball game that I have witnessed in 28 years," said coach Dan De Caprio. As pleased as De Caprio was with the offensive production, he was just as unhappy with the Cyclones' pitching and defense.

Ben Szafoni led a 14-hit production going 4/6. Matt Ginn and Justin Stengle hit home runs. Stengle along with Brian Koronkowski, Matt Shilney and Isaac Padilla added two hits apiece.

The Cyclones are 5-9 and play doubleheaders Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27, at Harper College and Sauk Valley College, respectively, before returning home Monday, March 30, to play South Suburban College.

Cyclones ready for action

The 2009 Moraine Valley Cyclones baseball team looks to build on last season’s strong finish, which included winning 18 of their last 21 games. The 2008 squad notched an overall record of 24-22-1, and finished second in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference with an 8-6 record. Head coach Dan De Caprio is excited about the upcoming season after last year’s effort.

Leading the way this season are returning all-conference players catcher Dan Guerrero (Lincoln-Way Central) and pitcher John Katsikas (Addison Trail). The veterans, transfer students and freshmen have blended into a squad that should compete for not only the conference championship but also for a decent showing in post-season play. The team is loaded with great speed and power allowing for small ball play and big innings. Pitching and defense is excellent with a lot of depth.

The Cyclones are competing in the Palm Beach Challenge in Florida for spring training for the second year in a row. To start their trip the team opens up against Miami Dade College, which is already 17-3 for their season, and Broward Community College. De Caprio chose a tough tournament to start the season to better prepare his team. “If you’re going to be the best, you have to play the best. Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity, and my guys have prepared well.”

Returning sophomore pitchers Dave Hamstra (Chicago Christian), Eric Duschean (Eisenhower), Justin Stengle (Richards), and outfielder Dave Letourneau (St. Rita) should provide the leadership and experience the Cyclones are looking for to achieve their goals.

Transfer students shortstop Audy Higgins (Stagg/Quincy University), first baseman/pitcher Matt Shilney (Lockport/Edgewood College), third baseman/pitcher Alex Triantafillo (De La Salle/University of Wisconsin-Parkside), third baseman Matt Ginn (Evergreen Park/Air Force), and outfielder Jordan Jones (Seton/Chicago State) are welcome additions.

Twelve pitchers are on staff led by starting arms freshmen Matt Stauffer (Stagg) and Jason Depue (St. Rita), and sophomores Tom Kruse (Oak Lawn), Katsikas, Hamstra, Duschean, Stengle, and Triantafillo all battling for the six-man rotation. In the bullpen are relief pitchers Sean Boyle (Oak Lawn), Brian Koronkowski (De La Salle), Ginn, and Shilney.

Moraine Valley is fortunate to have three outstanding catchers with Guerrero and freshmen Dennis DeLaRosa (Jones College Prep) and Isaac Padilla (Curie).

The infield will have three first basemen, Shilney, Katsikas and Stengle, rotating between their pitching assignments. Ginn, Duschean and freshman Juan Perez (Reavis), who also doubles as a shortstop, will handle the hot corner at third. The middle is solid with Higgins at shortstop and Koronkowski at second. Collectively the infield is strong.

The outfield will be led by Letourneau in center field flanked by Depue, Ginn, Hamstra, Katsikas, Stauffer, Stengle, Jones, or Ben Szafoni (Richards), all of whom have speed and great arms.

NJCAA All-American honors go to Moraine Valley pitcher

Moraine Valley baseball player Bill Smith pitched his way on to the 2008 NJCAA All-American second team.

Smith, a second-year student and Brother Rice graduate, earned the honor for his 8-3 pitching record and performance throughout the baseball season. He also played third base when not on the mound.

“It’s a great honor for him, and he’s very deserving,” said Moraine Valley head baseball coach Dan De Caprio. “He has the eye of a tiger, and when he puts his mind to something, he excels. He’s had a tremendous year and is a true leader.”

In addition to being All-American, Smith also was selected to the All-Region IV Division II First Team and All-Conference First Team. He helped lead his team to the Region IV Division II Sectionals, where they finished fifth overall.

Baseball team plays hard ball in playoffs

Even after a rocky start, Moraine Valley’s baseball team found its stride and more wins to get them to the playoffs where they ended their season.

The team advanced to the Region IV Division II Sectionals in Grayslake and finished fifth overall.

“I’m very proud of our efforts and run at the end of the season,” said head coach Dan De Caprio. “Early on we played a difficult schedule and it all came together — pitching, hitting and defense — going in the direction I wanted to go.”

Concluding the season with an overall record of 24-22-1, the Cyclones finished second in the Illinois Skyway Conference with an 8-6 record. The team won 16 of their last 21 games, including one tie due to inclement weather.

De Caprio has seven players who have signed with and received scholarships to continue playing baseball at various colleges. There are also several returning athletes who should continue to strengthen the team. “With the number of returning players and strong recruits coming in, we are looking forward to next year,” he said.

Concluding this season, Bill Smith (Brother Rice) was selected to the All-Region IV Division II First Team, and Tom Daray (Reavis) was chosen for the Second Team. All-Conference First Team selections went to Smith and Justin Birks (Lyons Township), while All-Conference Second Team honors went to Daray, Dan Guerrero (Lincoln-Way Central), John Katsikas (Willowbrook), Joe Plocharczyk (Argo) and Jim Janchenko (Argo). Smith, Birks and Tim Garvin (Providence) were selected to play on the Region IV All-Star team May 27 at Benedictine University in Lisle.

2008 Season Preview
The Cyclones baseball team has a young squad with several new faces, but Coach Dan De Caprio, who is in his first season coaching at Moraine, is confident he has enough strong pitching arms and that his players have the defensive savvy to make a statement this season.

The team is led this year by five returning sophomores and captains, including centerfielder Jim Janchenko (Argo); right fielder Nino Guerrero (Whitney Young); shortstop Joe Plocharczyk (Argo); first baseman/pitcher Nick Klaczynski (Shepard); and starting pitcher Bill Smith (Brother Rice). They will provide this young team with experience.

The starting pitching rotation this season includes Smith, John Katsikas (Willowbrook), Dave Hamstra (Chicago Christian), and Klaczynski. Middle relievers will be Tim Poremba (Hancock), Eric Duschean (Eisenhower), Corey Norris (St. Rita), and Plocharczyk. The Cyclones have two closers, Dan Scahill (Willowbrook) and Tim Garvin (Providence).

“We should be able to stay in any game with the strength of our starting pitchers and depth of our bullpen,” De Caprio said. “Pitching and defense wins baseball games and are the strengths of this year’s squad.”

The infield looks good with some players taking on multiple roles. Three starting pitchers, Hamstra, Klaczynski, and Katsikas, will rotate with Albert Saucedo (Hancock) at the first base position this year. Pitchers Smith, Garvin and Poremba will be battling for the hot corner. The middle infield is set with Plocharczyk at shortstop and Scahill at second base. “I’m real happy with the fact that we’re strong up the middle defensively, and there’s more behind the plate,” De Caprio said. Dan Guerrero (Lincolnway Central), Justin Birks (Lyons Township), and Noel Perez (JFK) will share catcher duties as well as the DH role.

Patrolling the outfield from pole to pole are Guerrero, Janchenko, Henry Herrera (Plainfield), Tom Daray (Reavis), Dave Letourneau (St. Rita), and Mike Feddersen (Andrew). All six are able to play any of the outfield positions because of their speed and arm strength. “They’re all great. I wish I could have six outfielders,” De Caprio said.

“All in all the strength of this team is pitching and defense and an aggressive offense philosophy,” De Caprio said. “This team will steal bases, hit and run, bunt, and is versatile offensively.”

De Caprio is being joined this season by rookie coach Joe Walsh. “I’m excited to have Joe on my coaching staff, having coached him both at Lewis University and on the USA baseball team and the French and Belgium Tournament Opens,” De Caprio said. “He was a great pitcher and team leader for both squads.”

Moraine Valley hires Dan De Caprio as new baseball coach
Moraine Valley's baseball team is on deck for continued success after announcing Dan De Caprio as head coach of the Cyclones beginning this fall.

De Caprio replaces former head coach Mike Kashirsky, who led the Cyclones to back-to-back 30-win seasons in 2006 and 2007.

"I would like to thank athletic director Bill Finn for giving me this opportunity," De Caprio said.  "As he was the first head coach of Moraine Valley's baseball team, his efforts have guided this program to success; and the efforts of all the other former head coaches—Fabrizio, Jonas, Budding, and Kashirsky—have made Cyclone baseball what it is today.

"I have three goals as head coach," he said. "First, I want to help Moraine Valley compete for national championships on a yearly basis; second, I want to cultivate the athletic skills of student-athletes to help prolong their baseball careers; finally, I want to make sure that my players understand the importance of becoming role models, constructive leaders, and productive citizens within their own communities."

De Caprio has contributed many of his talents to Chicago area baseball, including assistant head coach and pitching coach for Lewis University in Romeoville, where he guided the Flyers to five World Series' and 13 Regional appearances in NCAA Division II, amassing a 828-531 record (.609) during his 25-year tenure (1982-2007).  In addition, De Caprio has gained international attention as head coach or pitching coach of six USA NCAA Division II baseball teams spanning to 2007 that have competed in several nations throughout Europe. He also has held appointments as assistant coach for the Joliet Jackhammers (2003); head coach for Mercyhurst College (Erie, PA; 1998); and head coach for Crete Monee High School (1974-81). In all, De Caprio has coached 70 players who went on to sign professional baseball contracts, including nine players who earned spots on a Major League Baseball roster. Currently, he assists in game-day operations for the Chicago Cubs.

De Caprio also is confident about the local talent. "While at Lewis, I saw several skilled players from high schools within Moraine Valley's district come up through the local ranks. I'm looking forward to securing local athletes who want to be a part of Moraine Valley's winning tradition," he said.

"Dan's baseball expertise and devotion to student-athletes will undoubtedly support our tradition of excellence both on and off the field," said Bill Finn, Moraine Valley's director of Athletics. "He'll be an outstanding addition to Moraine Valley Athletics. We're fortunate to have him."

De Caprio was a three-sport athlete in high school, playing baseball, football and basketball for Rich East High School in Park Forest.  He continued his education at Illinois State University, completing a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1974 before earning a master's degree in physical education/athletics administration in 1982 from the University of Illinois-Chicago.
