November 18, 2011 The men's season can be characterized by a hyphenated word: near-miss. They missed winning the conference title by seven points and a place in the national championship by two points. The season also can be characterized by top performances. "It certainly was a character-building year," said coach Mark Horstmeyer, who completed his 12th season at the helm. "When the guys reflect on what might have been, they should reflect even more on what they accomplished. There were solid performances and post-season honors. We showed improvement from a year ago." Sophomore Jon Altman (Sandburg) led the charge attaining All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference honors for the second straight year and nailing down a spot in the NJCAA Cross Country Championship in Hobbs, New Mexico. He also was a member of the Cyclones 2010 Academic All-American team. "Jon has been our leader all year, not so much by what he said, rather by how day in and day out he set the bar for what he expected of himself. I give him a lot of props. He came into the year with a new philosophy on how to approach the season, and it paid off for him. He wants to continue his running at the next level, and he will make a contribution. He has learned a lot the past two years and that will indeed help him," Horstmeyer said. Also finishing his career at Moraine Valley is Luke Bronson (Bremen), a two-time All-Conference selection and a national qualifier last year. He just missed qualifying this year. He also earned a spot on Moraine Valley's All-Academic team. Luke has been a solid contributor for us, and if he decides he wants to run at the next level, he will be an asset. Also concluding his Cyclones career is Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower). "If they handed out awards for hardest working and most dedicated, Felipe would be 'all-world.' He worked extremely hard all year, starting with the off-season last winter. He was determined to improve his personal best time, and he did, cutting more than a minute off his PR from last year. If he wants to continue running at his next school, he will be a contributor," Horstmeyer said. Freshmen also were contributors starting with Adam Gurke (Reavis), who qualified for the national championship and ran in the top seven all year. "Adam is another hard-worker despite having chronic knee pain. He just refuses to let that be an issue. We look forward to having him back next year to provide that leadership from the experience he gained this year," Horstmeyer said. Phil Culbertson (Stagg) will be counted on heavily next year after gaining a lot of experience in 2011. "Phil is another one of our hard workers who also has a passion for the sport. If we are to compete for titles next years we will need him. He has tremendous potential," his coach said. Mohamed Assadalla (Bahrain) also is expected to help out a lot next fall. "Mohamed never competed in cross country until he joined the team this year, and his improvement was remarkable," Horstmeyer said. "He dropped his time in each successive race, finishing the season with a PR. From his experience this year and for the training he will put in during the off-season, he should be right in there. He has a lot of natural ability." Adam Tyrka (Reavis) was the third member of the Cyclones' All-Conference contingent who also will be expected to help next year. "Adam had some bad luck this year. The week before regionals he got the flu, and although he tried to gut it out, he never really recovered," Horstmeyer said. Rich Gray (Stagg) had to deal with a lot of health issues, according to his coach, but "he came on strong at the end of the season. He knows what he has to do during the long off-season and is determined to come into the new year really fit. He has a real upside."
November 14, 2011 Two Cyclones battled a multitude of challenges Nov. 12 at the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championship in Hobbs, New Mexico, and gained a lot of experience from the effort. Jon Altman (Sandburg) and Adam Gurke (Reavis) were among 288 competitors who had to deal with strong winds, an "obstacle-like" 8K on the Ocotillo Golf Club course, and 3,500 feet of elevation. "This was a tough race, physically and mentally, because of the course conditions and weather and elevation. I think both guys learned a lot about competing and that will serve them well next year," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "Adam not only had to battle the conditions, but he also had to contend with his season-long chronic knee pain that flared up from the series of roller coaster mounds. I give him a lot of credit for gutting it out," Horstmeyer said. Gurke finished in 268th place in 33:42. "Jon fought the good fight, but unfortunately he started cramping, got sick and had to stop," Horstmeyer said. "He toughed it out as long as he could. It was just one of those days." Even though the results were not what the two Cyclones wanted, they both had solid seasons. Altman closed out his career as a two-time All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference runner and as a national qualifier while Gurke, a freshman, has a shot at a second national qualifying berth next year in addition to conference and regional accolades. "I can't say enough about Jon. He is a hard worker and dedicated to improving every week. He has a great deal of experience competing not only against other community colleges but also against four-year schools of all levels. He is not intimidated by big races nor strong competition. He's in there every race trying to contribute to his team's success. He will be a solid addition next year wherever he chooses to go," Horstmeyer said. "After a year of valuable experience, I'm really looking forward to seeing what Adam can do next year. I know he will use this year's national experience as motivation to spend the off season getting fitter and come back next season even more determined," Horstmeyer said. "He has a tremendous upside."

October 24, 2011 Morton College took the crown with 52 points. Moraine Valley scored 59 points, Prairie State College was third with 73 followed by Elgin Community College in fourth with 96, College of Lake County in fifth with 101, and Oakton Community College in sixth with 127 points. Jon Altman (Sandburg) led the charge across the 8K finish line on Moraine Valley's Cyclones Cross Country Course in eighth place in 28:22 followed by Adam Tyrka (Reavis) in ninth place in 28:23, Luke Bronson (Bremen) in 10th in 28:30, Phil Culbertson (Stagg) in 18th in 28:59, Mohamed Assadalla (Bahrain) in 21st in 29:20, Kevin Trujillo (Reavis) in 24th in 29:51, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 25th in 29:55, Adam Gurke (Reavis) in 26th in 29:56, and Rich Gray (Stagg) in 37th in 31:30. There were 54 finishers. For complete race results. Altman, Tyrka and Bronson earned All-Conference honors- Altman and Bronson for the second straight year. "My congratulations to Jon, Adam and Luke. They provided the bulk of the work, and I'm happy to see their effort paid off for them," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "We came up a few points short. It's not often that you have three in the top 10 and go home with second place," Horstmeyer said. "We just need the rest of the guys to step up now and provide support to our top three guys at regionals. We still have work to do- the team knows that- and I'm confident that we'll see a renewed effort out there on Saturday. It will be exciting." The Cyclones host the NJCAA Region IV Championship on Saturday, Oct. 29 starting at 11 a.m.
October 17, 2011 The Cyclones waged an all-out battle against gusty winds and a strong field on Oct. 15 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational, finishing 45th of 47 teams. Adam Tyrka (Reavis) was the first Moraine Valley runner to finish the 8K course at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne in 292nd place out of 434 finishers in 28:11. Phil Culbertson (Stagg) followed in 344th in 28:51, and he was chased by Jon Altman (Sandburg) in 355th in 29:04, Luke Bronson (Bremen) in 359th in 29:09, Mohamed Assadalla (Bahrain) in 368th 29:21, Adam Gurke (Reavis) in 369th in 29:21, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 385th in 29:38, and Kevin Trujillo (Reavis) in 406th in 30:50. "The guys did a really good job running in winds that were gusting up to 45 miles per hour and competing against an outstanding field. It was the pre-national for the NCAA Division III championship," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "I liked the way they battled, and we had a nice little pack going. We were the only community college in the race, and I thought they held their own. What a great experience for them! They had the opportunity to run against some of the most outstanding collegiate runners in the country and what our guys did was certainly an accomplishment." The Cyclones now prepare for the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Championship on Saturday, Oct. 22, on the Cyclones Cross Country Course on the Moraine Valley campus. "Their race on Saturday should give them a boost to their confidence. I think they will battle and be in the mix for the conference title. It should be very exciting," Horstmeyer said.
October 10, 2011
October 3, 2011 The Cyclones harriers turned in their best team showing of the season on Oct. 1 over a challenging hilly 8K course at the Warrior Invite hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran College at Greenfield Park in West Allis. The men finished fifth among 15 teams. Jon Altman (Sandburg) led the assault in 29:04 finishing in 27th place, followed by Adam Gurke (Reavis) in 29:15 in 31st, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 30:05 in 46th, Luke Bronson (Bremen) in 30:06 in 47th, Phil Culbertson (Stagg) in 30:18 in 51st, and Mohamed Assadalla (Bahrain) in 31:01 in 63rd. There were 115 finishers. "This course is not for the faint of heart," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "This was an excellent opportunity for them to see where their fitness is and to gauge what they have left to do. Although their individual times were not where we thought we should be at this point, they did learn something about race tactics. The guys acknowledged they misjudged their first mile and then had to spend the rest of the time playing catch-up. That can take its toll. But to finish fifth- the highest finish by a community college in the race- is a positive and one that we can build on for this Saturday's race on the toughest course they will race on all year. We're looking forward to it."
September 25, 2011 The Running Cyclones learned a thing or two about racing on a hilly 8K course- and in the rain- Sept. 24 at the 13th Annual Forester Invitational hosted by Lake Forest College in Adler Memorial Park in Libertyville. No team scores were kept. Phil Culbertson (Stagg) was the first Cyclones across the finish line in 28:56, followed by Jon Altman (Sandburg) in 29:09, Adam Tyrka (Reavis) in 29:17, Luke Bronson (Bremen) in 29:30, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 29:49, Adam Gurke (Reavis) in 30:13, and Mohamed Assadalla (Bahrain) in 30:40. There were 114 finishers. "The guys got their first taste of challenging hills, and then after the first mile, racing in the rain," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "They had a good outing, and I liked how they finished. There was about 1:44 difference between our top finisher and our seventh runner. We have been working and working on getting them to run together, and Saturday I think they began to get the message. We really liked what they did." He added that the men head into their second hilly race on Saturday- a place that has proved challenging to previous Cyclones teams. "This should be a good race for them. They will need to help each other to have success, and I believe they will do just that."
September 19, 2011 The Running Cyclones took advantage of a very competitive field to turn in a "promising" performance on Sept. 16 at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Illinois State University. They finished 26th of 32 teams representing colleges and universities in all NCAA divisions, NAIA and community colleges in the state. Adam Tyrka (Reavis) was the first Moraine Valley runner to cross the line, finishing in 213th place out of 323 finishers in 27:56. He was followed by Phil Culbertson (Stagg) in 229th place at 28:36, Jon Altman (Sandburg) in 239th in 28:53, Kevin Trujillo (Reavis) in 241st in 28:55, Adam Gurke (Reavis) in 249th in 29:15, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 265th at 30:09, Ivan Chow (Hong Kong) in 293rd in 32:16, Brian Torres (Reavis) in 299th in 33:13, and Rich Gray (Stagg) in 301st in 33:55. "We had a good, solid outing. The guys showed a lot of promise of good things to come" said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "We just have to keep working hard and packing it in. We're still not where we want to be in finishing the race, but most of them improved their times from the previous week, and those who ran the race last year did even better. We're pleased with where we are, and the next three races will be a good test for us because they're hilly and the competition is strong. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can get accomplished."
September 12, 2011 The start was surprising, but then again so was the closing as the running 'Clones finished seventh in a nine-team race at the Midwest Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University on Sept. 9. Adam Tyrka (Reavis) led the way with a 50th place finish in 28:50 over the breezy 8K course at Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais. Jon Altman (Sandburg) was next across the line in 53rd place in 28:59 followed by Adam Gurke (Reavis) in 57th in 29:08, Kevin Trujillo (Reavis) in 66th in 29:37, Phil Culbertson (Stagg) in 68th in 29:41, Ivan Chow (Hong Kong) in 93rd in 32:59, and Rich Gray (Stagg) in 96th in 35:16. There were 98 finishers. Moraine Valley was the only community college competing. "They didn't run exactly as we had drawn it up, so we were pleasantly surprised with their results," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "Dimitri [Dimizas, assistant coach] and I just had to laugh after the first mile and we were still shaking our heads at the third mile, and at the finish we just threw up our hands," Horstmeyer said. "We got the results we wanted, but it's back to the drawing board. They showed us quite a bit of positives that we can work with and that will give our younger kids more confidence as we head into the Illinois Intercollegiates at Illinois State on Friday. For five of the guys, this was their first 8K race in a very fast, competitive field. This will help them on Friday."
September 6, 2011 The running Cyclones turned in a "hot" performance on Friday, Sept. 2, at the Elmhurst College Earlybird Invitational, finishing 13th in the 16-team field to get their 2011 season underway. Adam Gurke (Reavis) led the way with a 91st place finish in 22:42 over the breezy and steamy 6K course in Eldridge Park. Luke Bronson (Bremen) was next across the line in 95th place at 22:53 followed by Phil Culbertson (Stagg) in 100th place in 23:05, Kevin Trujillo (Reavis) in 101st in 23:06, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 111th in 23:32, Brian Torres (Reavis) in 144th in 25:51, Ivan Chow (Hong Kong) in 156th in 27:02, and Rich Gray (Stagg) in 158th in 27:31. There were 171 finishers. "I was pleased with our effort, given the fact that it was in the 90s and extremely humid, and this was the first college race for most of the guys," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "There were more positives than negatives. Our plan was not to run personal records but to begin understanding what it takes to work together. For the most part that was accomplished, although we need to be bunched up even more. We're off to a good start, and we'll learn more about ourselves on Friday when they will race their first 8K distance. Should be fun."

August 25, 2011 2011 Season All-Conference team: Jon Altman (Sandburg), Adam Tyrka (Reavis), Luke Bronson (Bremen)
February 25, 2011 The men's team earned recognition as an Academic All America team from the National Junior College Cross Country Coaches Association for their outstanding work in the classroom, finishing 21st of 25 teams earning the distinction. Three women's cross country team members earned 2010 Academic All America honors and the women's team also earned recognition as an Academic All America Team and was designated an Academic Team of the Year, ranking 18th out of 33 Academic All America teams. Members of the men's team included Jon Altman (Sandburg), Luke Bronson (Bremen), Raul Gonzalez (Argo), Jim Johnson (Reavis), and Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower). Simona Jurcik (Queen of Peace), Nagieh Omer (Reavis) and Ashley Shares (Stagg) were named Academic All Americans. Joining them on the Academic All America Team were Jacquelyn O'Connor (Sandburg) and Kaitlyn Piazza (Mt. Assisi). The Cyclones cross country program has fielded 30 Academic All Americans since it started in 2000. "These scholar-athletes are simply outstanding. They attend class full time, work part time, and excel as athletes and students. Their performance on and off the field speaks highly of them. I am very proud of their achievement. It is a tremendous honor for them and Moraine Valley," said coach Mark Horstmeyer.
December 9, 2010 The men's cross country team will have a distinct Reavis High School flavor in 2011 after four Rams signed letters of intent to run for the Cyclones. Adam Gurke, Marco Almanza, Kevin Trujillo, and Adam Tyrka will bring outstanding credentials to the program. All four have run in the top seven the past two years that resulted in conference and regional championships both years. Almanza, Tyrka and Trujillo were named to the All-South Suburban Conference team this fall, and Almanza and Tyrka also earned the honor in 2009. Additionally, Tyrka was named to the 2010 All-Regional team. "We are really pleased that Adam, Marco, Kevin, and Adam have decided to start their college careers at Moraine Valley, and we're excited for what they will contribute next fall in helping us seek championships," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "They are the kind of young men who any college would want on and off the field, and we feel fortunate that they have decided to become Cyclones. They are winners in every sense of the word." The Reavis quartet will bolster an already strong core of veteran runners. Five of the Cyclones' top seven runners who finished second at the 2010 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship are expected to return. "Next fall will be a lot of fun," Horstmeyer said. "We could be the deepest we have ever been, so the competition for the top spots will be terrific. Adam, Marco, Kevin, and Adam will only help us get better. They understand the meaning of hard work, commitment and teamwork. That's what made them successful at Reavis, and it should be no different at Moraine Valley."
November 18, 2010 The pluses of the 2010 season foretell bright prospects for next fall as a host of freshman runners are expected to return to burnish this year's accomplishments. Among the many achievements was the Cyclones runner-up finish in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship with three runners earning all-conference honors: Dimitri Dimizas (Richards), Luke Bronson (Bremen) and Jon Altman (Sandburg). Dimizas, who also earned All-Region IV honors, and Bronson qualified for the NJCAA championship where both runners turned in solid performances. Most of the 15-member team- the largest in Cyclones running history- recorded "personal bests," especially the sophomores who showed marked improvement from the previous fall. Despite the large numbers, the Cyclones came together as a team. "They were unified in their approach. They were one big, happy family," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "Many close friendships were formed. That says a lot about this great group of guys we had." The team graduates only four sophomores: team captain Dimizas, Chris Lindich (Reavis), Jim Johnson (Reavis), and Rich Sparks (Stagg). All were two-year contributors. "We will miss Dimitri's leadership and work ethic. He was a mainstay for us this fall and last year. He achieved quite a bit, two-time national championship qualifier and all-region and all-conference this year. He was our leader both in races and in workouts. He will make a strong contribution at the next level," his coach said. "Chris really put the time in this past summer and the results showed. He showed dramatic improvement, and I think he can look back on his second season with a great deal of satisfaction," Horstmeyer said. "Jimmy was a competitor, he always gave it his all. That kind of effort will really pay off for him on and off the field of battle. He knew what he had to do to prepare himself and that will carry over into whatever he endeavors to do in the future," Horstmeyer said. "Rich stuck in there all year despite having to deal with a nagging illness. He also can look back over the past two years and find a lot of satisfaction with what he accomplished. I wish him well," his coach said. The prospects are bright for the 2011 season with about a dozen first-year runners expected to return. "I'm already looking forward to next season. Our freshmen gained a lot of experience in training and racing at the college level, and this will only help them improve even more than they did this year," Horstmeyer said. "We will go into the next season on a very upbeat and positive note."
November 14, 2010 Two Cyclones put an exclamation point on the 2010 season with outstanding performances at the NJCAA Cross Country Division I Championship on Nov. 13 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Luke Bronson (Bremen) placed 112th in 27:34 while Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) followed in 137th place in 27:52. There were 260 finishers in the 8K race. "Luke turned in an outstanding performance, his best of the year, and to do that in a national championship tells a lot about the kind of competitor he is. I'm excited at the prospects of what he will be able to do next fall. He has a lot to build on," coach Mark Horstmeyer said of Bronson, who earned All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference recognition. "Luke really came on strong for us, especially during the championship chase. I think he has barely tapped his potential." "Dimitri also had a great race. The results are indicative of the kind of season he had," the coach said of his captain who earned All-NJCAA Region IV, Division I and all-conference honors. "I can't say enough of Dimitri's leadership and effort this year. This was the first time we had team captains, and he did the job for us. He certainly set the bar high for captains in the seasons ahead," Horstmeyer said. "We are going to miss him a lot. He has done the job for us these past two years, qualifying for nationals twice. He is a hard worker and has a passion for running- two great attributes when you want to be competitive at the college level. I'm sure he will be a great contributor at the next level. He has run against four-year schools at all levels the past two years, so he knows what to expect and what he has to do to improve."
November 1, 2010 Two Cyclones extended their 2010 season for another two weeks, but for their teammates the season ended on a down note on Oct. 30 at the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IV Division I Championship at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg. The men finished fourth in the team standings with 91 points over the windblown 8K course on Sandburg's campus. Waubonsee Community College captured the title with 38 points, followed by College of DuPage with 57 points and Sauk Valley College with 77 points. College of Lake County was fifth with 113 points, Sandburg College was sixth with 158 points, and Prairie State College was seventh with 182 points. "I'm really not sure what happened. It was just one of those days that you hope doesn't happen and when it does, it's hard to point your finger at any one thing or things," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "I feel for them because it's not a pleasant way to end the season, but I hope they can take something from it and gain from it. They'll look back and see that their season was successful overall, second in conference, PR's, and good finishes at very competitive races." On the bright side, Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) and Luke Bronson (Bremen) earned their way into the national championship in Spartanburg, S.C., with their seventh and eleventh place finishes, respectively. Dimizas was named to the All-Region IV team. There were 67 runners in the field. "My congratulations to Dimitri and Luke. It was a strong field and a good portion of the course was exposed to gusty winds. They fought through it. I'm really proud of their effort," Horstmeyer said. "I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do at nationals. I think they will end their season on a very high note. It should be fun for them and memorable."
October 25, 2010
October 18, 2010 The Cyclones closed out the regular season Oct. 16 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational with a 34th place finish among a field 37 teams, including 10 nationally ranked four-year schools. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) led the way with a 27:47 clocking over the 8K Lake Breeze Golf Course and a 320th finish. Luke Bronson (Bremen) was next in 27:58 in 340th, followed by Kellen Williams (Leo) in 28:50 in 424th, Jon Altman (Sandburg) in 29:02 in 433rd, Ben Greer (Stagg) in 30:22 in 493rd, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 30:22 in 494th, Abel Garcia (Morton East) in 30:47 in 514th, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 30:55 in 519th, Wilson Tan (Kenwood Academy) in 30:56 in 522nd, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 31:40 in 540th, Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 32:07 in 549th, and Raul Gonzalez (Argo) finishing in 32:52 in 562nd. There were 575 runners in the field. "This was a really competitive race and a lot of fun," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "I wanted our guys to take advantage of the fast field to see what they could do as we start our preparation for the title chases the next two weeks. We want to be at our best, and I think we will." Moraine Valley hosts the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championships on Saturday morning on the Cyclones Cross Country Course and then travel to Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg on Oct. 30 for the NJCAA Division I Region IV championships.
October 11, 2010 The Cyclones without the services of their top four runners claimed a 12th place finish out of 15 teams Oct. 8 at Benedictine University's Eagle Invitational. Ben Greer (Stagg) in 115th place in 30:25 led the way over the hot and windy 8K course with Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 129th in 31:13, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 132nd in 31:34, Wilson Tan (Kenwood Academy) in 157th in 33:04, Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 161st in 33:22, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 163rd 33:34, Brian Koltz (Oak Lawn) in 175th in 35:13, Raul Gonzalez (Argo) in 180th in 36:39, and Travis Kmetz (Munster) in 184th in 37:39. There were 189 finishers in the race. "For whatever reason the guys had an off-day. Some races are just like that," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "We now have to regroup and gain from the experience that when things aren't working, you have to get through it and re-channel your efforts. I'm positive we'll see a different group of guys at UW-Oshkosh."
October 3, 2010 The Cyclones used the strength of numbers Oct. 2 at Wisconsin Lutheran College's Warrior Invitational, finishing 12th in the 18-team field. Jon Altman (Sandburg) was the first to cross the line in 93rd place in 31:10 followed by Kellen Williams (Leo) in 94th in 31:15, Luke Bronson (Bremen) in 95th in 31:15, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 98th in 31:20, Wilson Tan (Kenwood Academy) in 99th in 31:20, Ben Greer (Stagg) in 100th in 31:21, Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) in 105th in 31:45, Abel Garcia (Morton East) in 106th in 31:45, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 117th in 32:13, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 119th in 32:23, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 125th in 32:28, Raul Gonzalez (Argo) in 126th in 32:31, Brian Koltz (Oak Lawn) in 147th in 34:41, and Travis Kmetz (Munster) in 151st in 35:40. There were 161 finishers in the race. "The guys did an outstanding job," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "We thought this was a good race on a challenging course to see what they could accomplish by staying together as long as they could. It was awesome to see that wall of green go by and fly across the finish line one after another. They had a good time. They were tremendous."
September 30, 2010
September 26, 2010 The Cyclones stepped up the pace Sept. 25 at Lake Forest College's 12th Annual Forester Invitational, finishing eighth in the 11-team field and recording seasonal best times over the 8K course. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) led the way in 27:29 and a 32nd place finish. He was followed by Kellen Williams (Leo) in 27:58 in 42nd, Luke Bronson (Bremen) in 28:18 in 50th, Jon Altman (Sandburg) in 28:43 at 58th, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 29:05 finishing 67th, Ben Greer (Stagg) in 29:08 in 69th, Abel Garcia (Morton East) running 30:15 in 79th, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 30:36 running to 82nd, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 30:49 in 87th, Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 31:24 in 93rd, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 32:09 finishing 100th, Brian Koltz (Oak Lawn) in 33:46 at 110th, and Travis Kmetz (Munster) running 36:22 in 117th. There were 120 finishers in the race. "We told the guys all week that this was a fast course, and if they ran a smart race and stayed together, they would be able to step things up a bit, and they did," said coach Mark Horstmeyer said. "However, we have to continue to bunch things up more and keep pressing the pace. I was really pleased with their performance on Saturday. We're at the half-way mark of the season, and we need to keep focusing on what's possible. I think Saturday showed them that."
September 20, 2010 The Cyclones turned in a solid performance on Sept. 17, at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships at Illinois State University, finishing 23 out of 32 teams. The schools represented all divisions of the NCAA and NJCAA. Jon Altman (Sandburg) led the way in 28:23 and a 170th place finish. He was followed by Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) in 28:44 and a 183rd place finish. Kellen Williams (Leo) finished in 29:17, in 214th place followed by Luke Bronson (Bremen) at 29:19 in 216th, Ben Greer (Stagg) in 30:40 at 240th, Wilson Tan (Kenwood Academy) in 30:46 in 256th, Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) in 31:20 in 270th, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 31:49 in 276th, Abel Garcia (Morton East) at 32:20 in 288th, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 32:29 in 291st, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 32:37 in 294th, Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 32:50 in 299th, and Raul Gonzalez (Argo) at 36:01 in 331st. There were 343 finishers in the race. "Most of the guys tailed off a bit for one reason or another, but overall we had another good outing," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "I was pleased again with how they kept together in their groups, and if we continue to do that, we''l be in good shape. We also need to continue to race smart, and we'll have that opportunity again Saturday at Lake Forest College."
September 13, 2010 Jon Altman (Sandburg) led the way in 28:15 and a 43rd place finish in his first 8K of his collegiate career. He was followed closely by Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) in 28:19 and a 45th place finish. "They had a game plan and stuck to it," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "They helped each other, and that's what we need from them if we're to enjoy team success." Kellen Williams (Leo) finished 64th in 29:18 followed by Luke Bronson (Bremen), at 68th in 29:33; Ben Greer (Stagg) 78th in 29:48; Chris Lindich (Reavis) running 94th in 30:33; Wilson Tan (Kenwood Academy) 100th in 30:46; Abel Garcia (Morton East) 104th in 30:57; Rich Sparks (Stagg) at 116th in 32:05; Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) 118th in 32:13; Jim Johnson (Reavis) finishing 129th in 33:32; Raul Gonzalez (Argo)132nd in 34:01; and Jose Gonzalez (Argo) 133rd in 34:03. There were 137 finishers in the race. "I was really pleased with how the guys responded after last week," Horstmeyer said. "They remembered what they did wrong and what they did right. I was especially pleased with how they ran together and understood patience. We have a long, long ways to go, but they now have added another chapter to the learning process, and it should be a lot of fun to see what they do on Friday at Illinois Intercollegiates. I expect the growth to continue."
September 7, 2010 The running Cyclones turned in a pleasing performance on Friday, Sept. 3, at the Elmhurst College Early Bird Invitational, finishing 10th in the 17-team field. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) led the way with an 81st place finish in 21:04 over the windy 6K course in Eldridge Park. There were 207 finishers in the Cyclones' opening invite. Jon Altman (Sandburg) finished 97th in 21:35 followed by Luke Bronson (Bremen), 111th in 21:58; Ben Greer (Stagg) finishing 143rd in 22:51; Abel Garcia (Morton East) at 148th in 22:54; Wilson Tan (Kenwood Academy) running to 156th in 23:21; Rich Sparks (Stagg) at 161st in 23:30; Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 163rd in 23:35; Felipe Rivera (Eisenhower) finishing 164th in 23:35; Kellen Williams (Leo) at 177th in 24:12; Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 181st in 24:28; and Jim Johnson (Reavis) coming in at 183rd in 24:41. "I was pleased with our effort given the fact that this was their first college race for most of the guys," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "I think they learned a lot about how to race at this level. Dimitri, our captain, ran a smart race, and I think the new guys will look at that and learn from it. His leadership is important to us this year. We're off to a good start, and we'll learn some more on Friday when they will race their first 8K. I like the effort, and they are fun to watch."
August 30, 2010 Seeking to improve by leaps and bounds on the 2009 season, the men's team will have to look no farther than among themselves in 2010. The Cyclones will field the largest men's team ever in their 11th season, and each of the 15 runners has experience. "We are blessed with great numbers," said coach Mark Horstmeyer, who has led the men's team since its inception in 2000. "Our challenge will be to find guys who want to step up and use their experience and talent to settle for nothing less than championships. We certainly have the horses to do it." The harrier squad returns five runners from last year when they finished fourth at the Illinois Skyway College Conference championship and the NJCAA Region IV Division I championship. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) is the top returnee after qualifying for the national championship in 2009. Since that final race last November, the team captain hasn't stopped running and comes into the 2010 season fit and healthy. "Dimitri's work ethic is huge," said Horstmeyer. "We are fortunate to have him back because he will provide leadership to our mostly young team. He knows what it takes to be successful, and I look for him to have an outstanding year."
Other second-year team members are Chris Lindich (Reavis), Rich Sparks (Stagg),
Jim Johnson (Reavis), and Jose Gonzalez (Argo). "Since the end of last season,
Chris has devoted himself to getting better. He dedicated himself this off
season to getting into good shape. I'm really pleased with his efforts. He
should help us a lot this year," Horstmeyer said. "Rich, Jimmy and Jose are
working hard, and their efforts will pay off. I'm also counting on them to
provide leadership to the younger guys."
"Kellen may very well be the fastest guy, and if he can channel that to use over
an 8K, he will be very successful. Luke will really contribute for us this year.
He had a really good high school career, and I know he wants to make his first
year of college running even better. Wilson also has solid middle distance
speed, and when he gets into shape, he'll be a contributor to any success we
have. 2010 Season
All-Region IV team- Dimitri Dimizas (Richards)
2009 Season
November 20, 2009
November 16, 2009
November 2, 2009 The Moraine Valley harriers finished fourth among nine teams over the windy, cold, and muddy 8K course at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove. Tony Inacay (Reavis) was the first Cyclones to finish, placing 16th in 29:32. He was followed by Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) in 17th in 29:45, and Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) in 18th in 29:46. All three qualified for the national championship Nov. 14 at Newman Golf Course. "I can't say enough about the gutty performance of Tony and Dimitri, both shouldn't have been running, but they wanted to lay it on the line one last time, and I'm happy for them," said their coach, Mark Horstmeyer. "Pablo has the honor of qualifying two years in a row, last year as member of the team and this year as an individual. He can just let 'er rip at nationals. It will be a great way for him to finish his Moraine Valley career."
Julian Rodriguez (St. Laurence) was next in 23rd
in 30:06, Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 25th in 30:29, Tyler-Blaha Gruszka (Stagg)
in 33rd in 31:34, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 39th in 31:51, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in
40th in 31:59, Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 49th in 33:19, and Chris Lindich (Reavis)
in 54th in 34:12.
October 27, 2009 Disappointing sums up the Cyclones finish at the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship Oct. 24 at Waubonsee Community College. The men finished fourth in the seven-team field. "We were disappointed with the outcome. Our expectations were much higher, but unfortunately you have days like this, and we just have to put it behind us and get ready for Saturday. We have another crack at trying to finish the season on the upswing," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. Tony Inacay (Reavis) was the first Cyclones to finish, placing 14th in 29:16. He was followed by Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) in 17th in 29:49, Julian Rodriguez (St. Laurence) in 18th at 29:54, Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 23rd with 30:31, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 29th in 31:23, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 32nd in 31:31, Tyler-Blaha Gruszka (Stagg) in 34th in 31:42, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 44th in 34:18, and Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 51st in 37:42. There were 52 runners in the field. "I think we'll be ready to go on Saturday at regionals. A lot is at stake qualifying for the national championship. They know the course and they will face basically the same competition. They have a lot of work to do, but I think we'll see a better result. They know what's on the line," Horstmeyer said. The Cyclones return to Waubonsee to compete in the NJCAA Region IV Division I championship on Oct. 31. "It will be time to get after it," Horstmeyer said.
October 19, 2009 The Cyclones faced their toughest competition of the season on Oct. 17 when they traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for the Brooks Invitational, finishing 33rd in the 35-team field. Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) led the scoring in 27:42 over the rolling 8K Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne that put him in 334th place overall. Tony Inacay (Reavis) followed in 28:52 (444th place). Next were Julian Rodriguez (St. Laurence) in 29:11 in 456th place, Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 29:23 in 467th place, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 30:09 in 499th place, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 30:20 in 507th place, Tyler Blaha-Gruszka in 30:47 in 515th place, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 32:33 in 537th place, and Jose Gonzalez (Argo) at 33:20 in 541st place. There were 551 runners in the field. Moraine Valley was the only community college in the field. "The guys did a great job. Many of them had personal bests which goes to show you how competitive they are in a highly competitive race. The invite had some of the top NCAA Division III and NAIA teams in the nation competing. I think this was a great opportunity for them to know where they are and what they are capable of doing. I'm really happy for them," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. The Cyclones now start prepping for the championship season over the next four weeks. First up is the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship on Saturday at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove. The NJCAA Region IV Division I champion follows on Oct. 31 at Waubonsee and then the NJCAA championship on Nov. 14 in Peoria. "Our focus all season has been on the next four weeks. We still need to get kids healthy, but I think their performance at UW-Oshkosh really helped them," Horstmeyer. "It should be exciting."
October 12, 2009 The Cyclones improved their overall performance Oct. 10 at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Lucian Rosa Invitational from the previous week even though they were missing two of their top runners. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) led the scoring in 29:59 over the hilly 8K course that put him in 128th place overall. Felipe Flores (Bremen) followed in 30:53 in 164th place, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 31:41 in 172nd, Julian Rodriguez (St. Laurence) in 31:50 in 175th, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 32:54 in 184th, and Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 34:40 in 185th. There were 193 runners; the men finished 18th of 19 teams. "I was pleased with the way the guys bounced back a bit from last week, confirming my feeling that last week was just one of those races," coach Mark Horstmeyer said. "We can take many positives from this. Parkside's course is extremely hilly. You combine that with strong winds and a wet and muddy course, and you have a stiff challenge. I think they responded well also given the fact that they were the only two-year college in the field. It was a good experience." The Cyclones travel to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Brooks Invitational, where they will face their most challenging competition so far. "Oshkosh is hosting the NCAA Division III regional championship next month, so a lot of outstanding four-year colleges and universities will show up for a trial run. It should be another great experience for our kids," Horstmeyer said.
October 5, 2009 The Cyclones raced to a seventh-place finish at Wisconsin Lutheran College's Warrior Invite in West Allis on Oct. 3 despite having an off day. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) was the top finisher for the men, recording 29:16 over the rolling 8K course that put him in 19th place overall. Felipe Flores (Bremen) followed in 49th place in 31:03, followed by Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) in 62nd in 31:43, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 64th with 31:50, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 65th at 31:52, Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg) in 70th in 32:13, and Chris Lindich (Reavis) landing in 90th with 34:42. There were 112 runners and 14 teams. "This was really an off day for the guys. We talked about what we wanted to get accomplished, and we didn't get it done. I'm pleased with finishing as high as we did but disappointed in our individual effort. I know each of them is too. It was a quiet two-hour ride back to campus. We can't dwell on it. We have to learn from it, and I think they'll be ready to go next Saturday," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. The Cyclones travel to the Lucian Rosa Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where they will face their most challenging course so far. "This a great course for us because it's the same terrain we practice on every day. It should be a lot of fun," their coach said.
September 28, 2009 The men's team sped things up again on Sept. 26, racing to a 10th place finish in Lake Forest College's Forester Invite in Vernon Hills, and turning in some good times as well. Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) was the leader of the 10-man pack, placing 41st in 28:32 over the 8k course. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) finished next in 49th place in 28:57, followed by Tony Inacay (Reavis) in 56th in 29:00, Julian Rodriguez (St. Laurence) in 65th in 29:47, Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 72nd in 30:18, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 83rd in 31:05, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 86th 31:19, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 90th in 31:27, Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 92nd in 31:48, and Pablo Cardoso (Bremen) in 101st in 33:12. There were 118 runners in the 11-team field. "Most of the guys had another good outing and dropped their times again," coach Mark Horstmeyer said. "It was very good day to do well. Pablo, Dimitri, Tony, and Julian stepped up, and I expect that to continue. It's been interesting to see how the rest of the guys keep improving each week to get into our top seven. Felipe is just right on the edge of cracking 30 minutes, and Chris had his best day by far improving his time by over five minutes from last week. It's been fun watching them." Next up is Wisconsin Lutheran College's Warrior Invite on Saturday. "There will be high expectations to see how they handle a tough course and a very competitive field. My prediction is that they will continue to improve because the home stretch is now coming into view," Horstmeyer said.
September 21, 2009 The men's team enjoyed their best outing of the season on Sept. 18 at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships at Illinois State University, finishing 28th of 31 teams. Most of the Cyclones also recorded their best times. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) again led the 11-man attack over the rolling 8K course with a 197th finish in 28:48 while Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) was a couple of steps behind in 199th place in 28:50. Tony Inacay (Reavis) placed 222nd in 29:17 followed by Julian Rodriguez (St. Laurence) in 269th in 31:14. Rich Sparks (Stagg) rounded out the scoring with a 277th place finish in 31:25. Also finishing for the Cyclones were Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg) in 295th in 32:14, Pablo Cardoso (Bremen) in 297th in 32:29, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 299th in 32:36, Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 303rd in 32:51, Jose Gonzalez (Argo) in 306th in 33:04, and Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 328th in 36:34. There were 334 runners in the field. "The guys were really excited about dropping their times from a week ago. We had a couple of them cramp up and one of the guys was tripped and fell hard on his leg, but when you can have eight improve a lot in the very next race says a lot of their progress," coach Mark Horstmeyer said. "The competition was fast as was ISU's course on its golf course. That helped a lot. They were pleased, but we still have a long ways to go, and I know they will get better and better." Next up is Lake Forest College's Forester Invitational on Saturday. "This also is a fast course and looks to be a highly competitive race for us. It should be a lot of fun," Horstmeyer said.
September 14, 2009 Despite finishing eighth in the eight-team field on Sept. 11 at Olivet Nazarene University's Midwest Classic, the Cyclones gained experience in their first 8K (4.96 mile) race of the 2009 season. Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) led the way over the rolling course at Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais with a 38th place finish in 29:34 and was followed by Tony Inacay (Reavis) in 44th in 30:30, Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) in 46th in 31:19, Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 47th in 31:41, Jim Johnson (Reavis) in 48th in 31:52, Julian Rodriguez (St. Laurence) in 50th in 32:33, Rich Sparks (Stagg) in 52nd in 33:11, Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg) in 67th in 33:58, Chris Lindich (Reavis) in 68th in 34:03, and Pablo Cardoso (Bremen) in 69th in 34:55. Seventy-seven runners competed. "For all but three of the guys, this was their first collegiate 8K race," coach Mark Horstmeyer said, "so again it was a learning experience. I think they discovered that racing an 8K as opposed to 3 miles is a huge difference. They gained a lot and will keep learning every week. They also are beginning to understand what it means to help each other out there." Next up for the Running Cyclones is the Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships on Friday at Illinois State University. "Fast field, fast course. It should be a lot of fun," Horstmeyer said.
September 9, 2009 It was truly a learning experience for the Cyclones as they helped open the University of Wisconsin's new cross country course on September 4. The men finished fourth of four teams on the rolling, grassy course that the Badgers built this year to get it ready for the 2009 season. "This was the first collegiate race for all but three of our guys," said coach Mark Horstmeyer, "and to be a part of Wisconsin's storied cross country history is a tremendous experience for them. This was something special. We are pleased we had an opportunity to be a part of the inaugural race." Dimitri Dimizas (Richards) led the way over the 6K (3.7 miles) course and was followed by Pablo Herrejon (Bremen), Tony Inacay (Reavis), Jim Johnson (Reavis), Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg), Julian Rodriguez (St. Laurence), Rich Sparks (Stagg), Felipe Flores (Bremen), Jose Gonzalez (Argo), Pablo Cardoso (Bremen), and Chris Lindich (Reavis). "It was hot, something they haven't been used to, and it was a fairly small but very fast field," Horstmeyer said. "They have a lot of things to get worked out, so Friday was good experience for them. I think they learned a lot about preparing and racing at the college level."
September 3, 2009 2008 Season
All-Region IV team: Kyle Abrahamsen (Shepard)
Nov. 20, 2008
Nov. 14, 2008 Selflessness and true team spirit highlighted an outstanding finale for the Cyclones at the NJCAA Men's Division I Cross Country Championship on November 8 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Led by Kyle Abrahamsen (Shepard) with a 114th-place finish in 27:52 over the rolling 8K course, the Cyclones claimed 31st place. Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) finished in 198th in 29:32 followed by Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg) in 220th in 30:31, Bruce Lockett (Argo) in 230th in 30:53, David Kierys (Argo) in 234th in 31:12 and Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 242nd in 32:58. Tony Manjarrez (Argo) suffered back spasms during the early part of the race and was not able to finish. There were 253 runners in the field. "I am so proud of this team, especially my two outstanding sophomore leaders Wes Sewell (Shepard) and Connor Williams (Andrew)," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "We found out Friday night that we would be only able to run seven of our guys even though we have nine on our team. The team was really disappointed, and we talked about a lot of options, none with a satisfactory outcome. So I told them that we would sleep on it, and I would make a decision before the race. "Wes and Connor made the decision for me. They told me Saturday morning that because they had run at nationals last year they would not race so the other guys could have the experience of competing in the championship race. I have never been prouder of two young men as I am of Wes and Connor. They are simply outstanding. We have taken three men's teams and two women's teams and a number of individuals to nationals for eight straight years, and I'm proud of each of their efforts, but the highlight was this year," Horstmeyer said. "This men's team has truly been a team from top to bottom. They competed week in and week out, worked hard to improve and achieved much. You can ask nothing more. They personify the meaning of team. I am very grateful for having the opportunity to coach these guys."
Oct. 27, 2008
Oct. 20, 2008 The men's team claimed the runner-up spot in the 2008 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Championship on Saturday, October 18, at Moraine Valley and placed three runners on the All-Conference team. Waubonsee Community College won the men's title. Morton College finished third, followed by Prairie State College, College of Lake County, and Elgin. Kyle Abrahamsen (Shepard) led the Cyclones with a fifth-place finish in 27:52; Wes Sewell (Shepard) was next in seventh in 28:20; and Connor Williams (Andrew) finished in tenth in 28:40. All three were named All-Conference- Sewell and Williams for the second straight year. Rounding out the scoring were Bruce Lockett (Argo) in 16th in 30:07 and David Kierys (Argo) in 19th in 30:32. Finishing right behind Kierys were Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg) in 20th in 30:44, Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) in 21st in 31:15, and Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 30th in 33:02. There were 41 runners in the 8K race. "I'm really proud of the job the guys did. Kyle, Wes, Connor, Bruce, David, and Tyler all had their best races of the season. It was a good time to step up. We were very solid one through eight," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "We talked all week that if they ran what they are capable of doing, they would be fine, and they were." Their work, however, isn't over. Their next challenge comes October 25 when they travel to Sauk Valley College, Dixon, to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IV Division I championship with a chance to qualify for the national race November 8 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Oct. 13, 2008
Oct. 6, 2008
Sept. 29, 2008
Sept. 24, 2008 Although the Cyclones did not turn in their best overall performance of the season, it was good enough to be the top placing NJCAA Region IV team at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships on Sept. 19, at Illinois State University's golf course. Individual efforts highlighted the race with Kyle Abrahamsen (Shepard) leading the way with his 147th place. He finished in his best time of the year to date. Following him across the line were Wes Sewell (Shepard) in 190th place, Connor Williams (Andrew) in 192nd place, David Kierys (Argo) in 198th place, Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) 205th, Bruce Lockett (Argo) in 214th place, Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg) in 236th place, Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 238th place, and Tony Manjarrez (Argo) in 246th place. There were 250 runners in the field. The Cyclones finished 21st of 26 teams. "I was pleased with Kyle's and Connor's effort, and David improved his time over last week. Even though it was an off-day for most of the guys, they still battled and ended up in pretty good shape. Sometimes it takes a race like that to kind of get the juices flowing for the rest of the year," coach Mark Horstmeyer said.
Sept. 17, 2008 The men's team must love mud and rain if the Cyclones performance at a rainy, muddy Spartan XC Classic is any indication. Nine runners crossed the finish line Friday, September 12, to help the team finish in 10th place among 12 teams. Aurora University hosted the invitational at a rainy, muddy Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora, where the Cyclones turned in their best performance to date. "The guys hung together and finished strong. Given the conditions, they really did a great job. Our top three runners broke the 30-minute mark for the 8K course which is really good considering the conditions. Two more of our guys were a few ticks away," said coach Mark Horstmeyer. "I think some of them surprised themselves." Pablo Herrejon (Bremen) led the way in 53rd place followed by Kyle Abrahamsen (Shepard) in 59th, Wes Sewell (Shepard)in 66th, David Kierys (Argo)in 86th, Bruce Lockett (Argo) in 89th, Connor Williams (Andrew) in 94th, Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg) in 111th, newcomer Felipe Flores (Bremen) in 116th, and Tony Manjarrez (Argo) in 129th. There were 135 runners in the field. "Each of them is fulfilling his role very well," Horstmeyer said. "They encourage each other and rely on each other. They know they have a lot of work left to do, and they're determined to get it done."
Sept. 9, 2008 If you look at the results of the men's two races-the Elmhurst College Earlybird and North Park University's Ted Hedstrand Invite- you would think that the men are in for a long season but not to them nor their coach. "We are right where we want to be," said Coach Mark Horstmeyer. "I cannot be more pleased with what the guys have accomplished. They are doing exactly what we have talked about from the start of the season." The men finished eleventh of twelve teams at the Earlybird on August 29 and seventh of eight teams at North Park's invite on September 6. "We are really stressing the team concept and the guys have bought into it. Wes Sewell and Connor Williams, both of whom earned individual accolades a year ago, are showing tremendous leadership to our first-year runners. They really want team success this year."

29, 2008 The Cyclones could very well have found the right formula for winning conference and region titles this fall- blend four returnees with four experienced newcomers. The Cyclones will be led by Wes Sewell (Shepard) and Connor Williams (Andrew), both of whom competed at the national championships in 2007. Second-year runners Bruce Lockett (Argo) and Tony Manjarrez (Argo) also will provide experience. They are joined by newcomers Kyle Abrahamsen (Shepard), Tyler Blaha-Gruszka (Stagg), Pablo Herrejon (Bremen), and David Kierys (Argo). "We already have good chemistry on this year's team," said Mark Horstmeyer, who has coached the men's team since its inception nine years ago. "One of the things we look for early on is whether the kids will work together, and so far I have seen this from the very beginning. We're all excited about our team's potential." Sewell and Williams will provide the leadership for this year's team. Sewell won the 2007 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference individual title and was named the conference Most Valuable Runner. He also was named to all-National Junior College Athletic Association Region IV team and turned in his best time of the fall at the NJCAA championships. Williams also was named to the all-conference team. "One of the reasons for their success last fall is that they are smart runners. They understood what they had to do in the off-season, what has to be accomplished every day during the season, and what they need to do in competition. I look for them to have an even better year this fall," said Horstmeyer. If Lockett stays healthy this year after having to deal with a knee injury most of last season, he will be an important factor in the Cyclones' success. "Bruce is highly motivated. He wants to make up for what he couldn't get done a year ago. Bruce will have to contribute this year and I think he's up to the task," his coach said. Manjarrez also is determined to excel but is nursing a sore back. "If we can get Tony healthy, he'll help us. He has the determination to do well," Horstmeyer said. The new runners are veteran cross country runners. Abrahamsen, Blaha-Gruszka, Herrejon, and Kierys all ran in high school. "Kyle was a top runner at Shepard as was Pablo at Bremen. David contributed for several years at Argo, and Tyler was a multi-sport participant at Stagg which will help him," Horstmeyer said. "Initially they will be challenged as they have to step up to race five miles rather than three miles. What I have seen in practice they are ready to do so." Horstmeyer will be assisted by two former Cyclones this year, Andrea Zylius and Matt Swiatkowski, both of whom are marathoners. Zylius is focusing on strength and conditioning and Swiatkowski is leading the workouts. "Matt was a two-time all-conference and all-region selection. Andrea actually started her running career with us. Both have been a great help in getting our kids ready and will contribute greatly to our success this fall," Horstmeyer said. "There is a lot of potential for this season to be very successful for the guys. It will depend on how well they work together in practice and support each other and whether they can carry that over into races. I think they can. They will be fun to watch," Horstmeyer said. 2007 Season
