High School Counselors--FAQs

Is an ACT score required to get into Moraine Valley Community College?
No. Placement tests are needed if a student did not score above a 20 in the math, English or reading sections of the ACT. 

Is an entrance exam required to get into Moraine Valley?
Yes, if the student did not score a 20 or above in the math, English or reading sections of the ACT. Students can study at www.act.org/compass

Is there someone to help students pick their classes?
Yes, we have an Academic Advising department with specialists in this area. They can be contacted at (708) 974-5721

Are students automatically accepted into Moraine Valley?
Moraine Valley has an open-admissions policy to those who:

  • have graduated from an accredited high school,

  • have received a GED Certificate,

  • are at least 18 years of age, or

  • are a high school graduate at least 16 years of age who has submitted an approved high school permission form.

After the application has been received, the applicant will receive an acceptance letter from the college. 

Can a student receive Moraine Valley credit while still in high school?
Yes. There are two ways to do so. One way is to take a class at Moraine Valley through the Jump Start Program. Also, a student may already be receiving Tech Prep credit through an agreement with his or her high school. If students want to know if they're receiving Tech Prep credit, they should consult their teacher or department chair at their high school. 

Can students start at Moraine Valley and then transfer to another school?
Yes. We have academic advisors who will help students choose the proper classes for transfer to a four-year college or university. Moraine Valley is the perfect place to complete the first two years of a bachelor's degree. 

Why do students have to take the placement tests?
The placement tests allow Moraine Valley to properly place students in the correct level class. 

Where can students take the placement tests?
The placement tests are held in the Testing Center in B101. A cost of $8 will automatically be added to your tuition bill. Call (708) 974-5309 for the Testing Center's hours of operation.

How old does a student have to be to take a class at Moraine Valley?
16 years old. 

Can students take a Jump Start class in the summer?
Yes, if the grant funds are available at that time. 

Do you have housing on campus?
As of right now, Moraine Valley will not be having housing on campus

What sports teams do you offer?
Men's baseball, women's softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball.
