FAQs
What
should I do if I will be absent from class?
In the event of illness, emergency or other reasons for absences, you must
notify—as far in advance as possible—your subdivision
office. Staff from your subdivision will post a class cancellation notice.
Instructor Absences
- All adjunct faculty will be entitled to
one sick day per semester in the fall and spring semester.
- There is no provision for a sick day in
the summer semester.
- There is no provision for other absences.
The only exception is jury duty.
- In the event of illness or other absences
notify the subdivision office as far in advance as possible. If your class
meets in a building other than the building where your subdivision office is
located you must still notify someone in your subdivision office.
- There is no option to make up missed
classes. If there is sufficient time, the department chair may find a
substitute to cover the course(s).
- After notifying your subdivision office,
staff from the subdivision office will post a class cancellation notice and
notify the department chair.
- The subdivision secretary will complete an
Adjunct Faculty Absentee form noting the reason for the absence. If the
reason for the absence is illness, the following will occur:
a. If there has been no absence recorded for the semester, the adjunct
faculty member will be paid and this will be noted on the form.
b. If there has been an absence recorded for the semester, the adjunct
faculty member will not be paid.
- The subdivision secretary will place a
copy of the form in the adjunct faculty member’s mailbox to be returned
signed.
- If an absence is not reported to the
subdivision office, the dean or department chair will verify that the
faculty member was absent. An Adjunct Faculty Absentee form will be
completed, signed by the dean and forwarded to Human Resources for
processing.

Valley Adjunct Faculty Organization Agreement 2007-2012.
