Intensive English Language Program (IELP) Mission Statement

The Intensive English Language Program (IELP) develops the communicative skills of non-native speakers of English in order to equip them to contribute to the local academic community and the larger global environment. While the primary goal of the IELP is to prepare non-native speakers of English for academic work, it also develops the communicative skills required beyond the college campus. These academic skills involve an increased awareness of the organization of written text, the development of reading strategies, an improvement in the grammar, mechanics, and format of written English, and the development of presentation and group discussion skills. Along with these language skills, the IELP strives to heighten student awareness when interacting with instructors, classmates, and others on a college campus. These same skills will better enable students to contribute to the internationalization of the Moraine Valley Community College student body and participate more fully in an increasingly global community.

Information and Admission Procedures
Call Moraine Valley's IELP office at (708) 608-4461 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. International students should contact the International Student Affairs Office at (708) 974-5334.

What is the difference between the IELP and English as a Second Language?
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is part-time, free, and noncredit for the purpose of developing basic English skills. The IELP is full-time, four days a week, tuition-based, and is more academic and intensive. Students gain skills to help them prepare for college study.  International students may not register for ESL classes and depending on assessment scores must enroll in IEL courses. Local residents may choose ESL or IELP to improve their English skills.

Calendar/Class Schedule
Classes are offered Monday through Friday. The IELP class schedule changes each semester, classes are offered from 8 a.m.-2:50 p.m. with a break for lunch. Some evening and online classes are also offered. Summer classes are also available for some subject areas.

Optional TOEFL Score Reporting
Students who have not taken the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam or who have scores less than 550 on the written exam, 213 on the computer exam or 80 on the Internet based exam will take the IELP placement test for evaluation of English skills. Students who have scored 550/213/80 or above and present official TOEFL transcripts are eligible to enter regular academic college classes.
